Any rumour as to why Gaston wasn't even on the bench yesterday? Could there be a 2 way deal lined up with Lazio or similar? Hope not, still think he is a very gifted player who we haven't seen the best of yet. Very good display yesterday, just need Vlaar at the centre of defence and a pacey wide man and I think top ten will be pretty straight forward.

I think he has a groin injury.

Not fit yet, I hear.

Just read in lot's of places that our ex-hero SRL has been sticking the knife in about the owners selling all the players. Disappointed in you Rickie I thought you at least knew when to keep your mouth shut. Whatever the reasons for the mass exodus I see absolutely no point in saying what he has apparently said. The likes of Lovren and Lallana from my point of view were not sold, they forced a sale with their prima donna attitudes. From what I saw yesterday I think with the obvious additions still to come, we will have a better team and squad than last year. Rickie Lambert should know better and I think he has made himself look a bit silly.

Agree18 Disagree17

Always injured. What a great signing he turned out be.

Agree2 Disagree11

We wait with baited breath for the day that you say something positive qwertywell.

Agree18 Disagree1

If you've got anything positive to post about Gaston's wildly successful Saints career, feel free to spread the good word, CoG.

Agree4 Disagree18

He only said things on Sky Sports yesterday, and he chose his words very well. He said that things had changed that were not meant to, and he hoped the owner and her people get things right.

I am amazed that so much has been read into what he said. I thought he handled the questions very well. If anything came out from it was his love of Southampton and us fans

Agree12 Disagree5

I would recommend watching the interview with fox.
He looked very uncomfortable and was clearly aware that he had slipped up. I think we all know something went on following cortese leaving. It's clear poch wanted promises that the board were not prepared to give but without details of want went on its impossible to judge.

What we should do now is move on, we look good for the coming season so let's just get behind those still at the club and not worry about what those that have left have to say.

It's obvious to everyone if logic is used, cortese budgeted on getting into the CL and his promised future spend was linked to that, as soon as it was obvious we couldn't make top 4 last season his plan fell apart and with it his promises. Don't blame the current board for past promises not kept, support the new regime and our new team which did not look out of place at Anfield. Put Gardos, Ramirez and Rodriguez into that squad and suddenly we look very strong. Quality wide player and a goalie understudy before end of transfer window and we will be top 10. Keep Cork as utility player, you can't replace Morgan and Victor.

Agree7 Disagree5

I think cortese departure hanged heavily on the financial fair play. We can't just spend and spend to get in to the champions league. The new strategy to progress as a football club changed, and cortese was not the man. The board wanted to recruit top staff to maximise our revenue. The board wanted him to stay, but he wouldn't have as much power.
As for cork, as I saints fan I hope he stays, but as an England fan I want him to play 1st team football somewhere. I don't think he will at saints

Agree6 Disagree1

19 Aug 2014 11:13:19
All I will say is he didn't have to say anything at all about what apparently happened when Cortese and Poch left. If he loves Southampton and us fans so much why is he still not here playing for us. Heard all this boyhood club stuff about Liverpool and I would have supported his dream had he kept his mouth shut. Little bit of double standards talk in my opinion.

Agree4 Disagree9

Lambert is a saints legend, I don't care what his opinions are. He came in and got is promoted two seasons in a row, and scored some vital goals in the premier league

We all know that with motor mouth in charge at LFC, all their players see fit to follow his example. Not worth worrying about-I suspect they will all have a little more to concentrate on shortly. They look far off a CL team and will have some explaining to do when they struggle after spending so heavily.

Agree8 Disagree2

19 Aug 2014 13:50:45
You could say also that the likes of Lallana were very much involved with our promotions but I don't hear you calling him a Saints legend.

All this mouthing off by Paul Lambert of Villa over the Ron Vlaar rumour is quite simply pathetic. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realise that RoKo would be interested in him. From what I can make of this Koeman was asked if he would be interested in signing Vlaar to which he replied that he thought Ron Vlaar was a very good player and that he would be the type of player he would like at Southampton if he was available. I don't remember Koeman at any stage say that he was going to try and sign him and therefore going behind PL's back. Don't quite see why Villa have got their knickers in a twist over this as it is just usual reporter talk. By the way I do hope we sign him though, just what we need.

Agree7 Disagree1

Personally I have never bad mouthed lallana. Just saying.
Anyone involved getting saints back into the premier league I won't speak badly of. Without lamberts goals we wouldn't be where we are.

19 Aug 2014 16:10:04
Point taken and accepted Saintsmiff but there are quite a few out there who would not agree with you, I'm not one of them. Bit of dick Lallana when it came to him moving from us but as everyone quite often says "that's football".

Just heard we have put in a bid for Andros Townsend! I for one would love him to sign. Thoughts?

Anyone who dosnt believe this, SSN reported it

Agree7 Disagree13

Lets hope so, that would pave the way for Morgan Schniedelin to go the other way as an exchange (not a sale) so therefore saving face for the Board. As long as we get say £10 million plus Andros Townsend I think that would be a deal!

Agree4 Disagree20

17 Aug 2014 13:12:29
Why do you want schniderlin to go he's the best player we have got, just forget it and move on

Agree23 Disagree5

Would be quality and 10m is a good fee. it will never be a player swap. spider stays.

Agree11 Disagree3

Spuds won't let Townsend go and if they do they will use it to get spider. We have enough in midfield with victor and cork . If we could swap and get the 10 million also makes good sense

Agree4 Disagree11

17 Aug 2014 14:24:22
Spider has to stay. Should have been captain but fonte deservedly got it after spiders outburst. People slate fonte but he is quality and very commanding at the back. He makes mistakes as does everyone but those that think he's not good enough for the first team need to watch him at fame at St Marys watch his moment off the ball his commanding and organising of the back 4. Spider is irreplaceable at the back. Cork is good cover for him. Similar players in my opinion and wanyama is a brick wall.

Fonte was excellent today

amazing game what a start to the season last third link up and right wing + 1 solid defender we are in the mix very impressed the potential with jelling.
some great steps up from the younger guys amazing job Ron! only + going forward guys law of attraction should give us great clout in the last few weeks of the transfer window!

Agree8 Disagree3

Plus what's the deal on Bertram great game! long shows promise and tadic was a handfull if we can link up pelle. . .

I thought JWP was quality at times but also lacked a bit of strength and wasn't quite the full ticket. Showed a lot of potential today

Agree13 Disagree2

JWP seriously lacked confidence in shooting I thought but good build up play.

Agree7 Disagree6

Full of confidence for the season. Get 2 that Rk wants and we are there! Spider has to stay! A draw was a fair result today but this game isn't always fair!

Agree9 Disagree2

I felt Tadic and JWP stood out. Both had great games. And Morgan too

Agree11 Disagree2

3 words Amaaaaziing. proud. unlucky.
Top 4 performance immensely proud.

Agree10 Disagree4

Spidy to me looked like he didn't want to be here, last season hw wouldn't off missed the henderson tackle that led to first, really do need a organising calming cb though and some pace on the wing, jury will be out on pelle for a good 10 games looked bit lost but its a massive jump into epl all in all reasonably happy but same story as last year. . if only those chances

Well proud to be a saint today - didn't deserve 0 points! Wanyama was excellent, Spiders passing was spot on. (and the crossbar was 1mm to low)! Tadic skimmed Lovren to get the assist. Fonte looked assured, Clyne looked like he should have gone to Brazil, Pelle was nails. Boys, well chuffed - made Liverhampton to look standard and away from home. Well proud!! good times ahead :)

Agree10 Disagree1

Defo needed done more width on the right. Townsend would fit perfectly IMO Shame we had a poor 45 mins as we could have got points from that game

Agree4 Disagree1

17 Aug 2014 18:49:12
Not sure how we lost that game, we were by far and away the better team. Yoshida not quite good enough but thought Tadic, Clyne, Wanyama were outstanding. Heard when asked about Schneiderlin staying Koeman said " we hope so " which sounds like possibly not. Heard about the Townsend rumour, he's good but get's a lot of injuries and we have a thin squad. He is worth having though if he stays fit. Pelle looked a bit like a fish out of water today and crying out for someone that can play off him. Looking forward to next Saturday, that's when we really can tell what we've got. Liverpool were very lucky today but they scored 2 and we didn't.

Agree6 Disagree1

If Spider doesn't go now he'll go at the end of the season. We're in transition now so let him go and give Corky the game time. JC's a perfect replacement and if he's getting time. on the pitch he'll want to stay.

Agree6 Disagree2

Possibility Townsend could come to saints as we now poch hates wingers,

Agree3 Disagree3

Townsend is a decent player but I still think we can do better: konoplyanka for one

Agree5 Disagree4

Tonsend is greedy spurs fans don't rate him and want him gone!

Agree7 Disagree1

Townsend bid rejected. And I don't care wot anyone else says wanyama was the best player in a saints shirt for me today, more of that big vic!

Agree9 Disagree4

First up top performance and I think we were all a little nervous with how we would perform with all the changes. Yes no points but a lot of my mates who are Liverpool fans were full of praise of the saints.
Bertrand was quality and tadic will when settled in prove a more then able replacement to Lallana. Spider was top notch and victor was as good as I have seen him in saints colours. Yes we need the new centre half to get fit but also I really really think Fonte stepped up to captains role and looked amazing - a performance I wasn't sure was in him so I'll back off him!! Forester though not really worked looked a monster so after all the change and with perhaps a player or two more joining I'm starting to think we could be top ten again. Fair play Koeman in u we trust

Agree7 Disagree1

Let us not forget that Spider has only been training for 1 week, unlike the others, but he still played well even if not match fit!

Agree7 Disagree1

Big Vic was superb today. Spider though was excellent and I think we have some home grown talent that are as good as Townsend rather than a swap deal if that is on the cards. Would rather spend the cash on a top notch central defender to play alongside Fonte.
Great second half performance by the team after a shakey first 45. If we had taken the two chances we would have come away as deserved winners.

Agree5 Disagree2

Wanyama was a different player, 100 times better on the ball and was actually completing passes. I think he will show why we payed that money for him this season

Agree7 Disagree1

Really agree with the Wanyama comments here. I was a fierce critic of his last season. He didn't adjust to the PL and was a liability at times. We looked better with Cork in the side than Big Vic. Yesterday though he was an absolute rock. If that is a taste of things to come he will be vital for us this season

Agree7 Disagree0

Gardos will start next to fonte.
