Manchester United are to put in a shock bid for Sadio Mane as they are going to miss out on Pedro to Chelsea. On the Newsnow website

A lot on the news about this. Mane is one of the most talented players I've ever seen at Saints. Hugely important for the club. Lose him, and we will struggle in every aspect this season. He is truly irreplaceable as he is a unique payer. To sell him, for whatever amount, will be suicide.

A frustrating thing to hear, but I believe nothing will materialise from this. If they were to make a bid, they'd be having to put forward a figure greater than what they could of done for Pedro, to even get Les Reed's attention. He's got a three year contract and we have zero reason to sell him.

Interesting that this was only released after Koeman's press conference, otherwise he probably would of iterated in the same vein as the Fonte to Villa speculation, 'no way'.

van gaal buying anyone with 2 legs there will be a lot of players at Manchester United this season who won't get a game

HI
If saints sell mane to Manchester United it would smack of assett stripping, as mane has not indicated he wanted to leave and is our most influential player at the momment, and I can't believe RK could or would possibly sanction this deal.

If it goes throught which I think is very unlikely, perhaps it could tie in with a swap deal for januzaj? As the club have said they are prepared to loan him out. Still think this won't happen no matter what the bid is, but after the last 2 summers you never know.

Mane IS keen on the move as he has been told by his agent of the enquiry. I bet he pushes for it if not this season then defo next.

You are all probably right about Mane but have you considered he might want to go to United and would make it awkward for us . He has only been with us 5 minutes so I don't think an allegiance exists between him and us . A bit worrying all this if true , wonder whether Morgan might have influence in this , hope not but not out of the question .

This story is also being reported on BBC sport, so there is some credibility to it. I'm just wondering what psychological impact this will have on Mane.

Agree with other posters, I don't want to see Mane leave, great talent

which newspaper suggested mane was keen on the move? Yes, the bid is official but I think mane being keen on the deal is a lie made up just to add a twist in the tale

He has a £21.5M release clause

"Tomorrow there will be an invasion of nymphomaniac female aliens within the Southampton area. Just buy our papers/ watch our programmes to get full information." No facts, so rumours, no rumours so speculation, no speculation so fabrication-doesn't matter it will still be lapped up!

And now if it is reported on BBC sport it has some credibility! Is this the same BBC whose reporter started off the evening for the last election in a red dress but had changed to a blue one by the morning? (It really happened.)

I see the media were also reporting today the big risks of fracking because the drills go down through the aquifers and our water will be polluted as a result! Erm, where did the 100s of drills go during the last 50 years for exploration for on shore gas and oil in the UK? A few of them very close to Southampton and my tap water is OK but as the Times had such "statement" there is some credibility?

Eds, do you know if this release clause fee is correct? Guys, if the answer is yes, being a realist I think it extremely likely to happen.

Agree1 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - release clauses are not really relevant in England mate. They are not legally enforcable as Suarez found out when he tried to force a move to Arsenal a couple of seasons ago. As for Mane, United did enquire when they bought Schneiderlin but were told he is not for sale and that, as far as I am aware, was that. I would only see anything being revived if he has made it known to United that he wants the move to go through.}

Guys, of course everyone wants mane to stay and I know we would not entertain an offer from UTD unless it was stupid stupid money or infact if the player himself gets his head turned by the news that UTD want him.

Then it could be hard to keep hold of him, I do remember mane's agent saying he will be better than Messi in a few years so I could see his agent using us as a stepping stone to a bigger club.

Also it makes sense with the resurfacing rumours about redmond. Anyway I hope this will blow over and mane goes on to have a super season with the saints. COYR!!

If Mane wants to go, he'll go. He kicked up a fuss at Salzburg when Saints came after him to force through the move. He knows what to do.

That's probably why United are leaking this to the media, to put the ball in his court.

He'd be a disastrous loss. He's the only high quality attacking player they've got.

Five first teamers sold last summer, could be another four lost this summer. Ridiculous.

You mean like Morgan this time last summer? Never one for consistency are you-apart from frequently referring to the club as they and not we. I still have problems with your logic, and point of interest.

Leaking stuff about Pedro worked well, didn't it!

Anyone have any idea of the kind of fee we'd be talking about? Selling our best asset to a club that's on a buying spree. Needs to be big money.

When they bought Spider they asked Les whether we'd sell Mane. Les said 'no' and that is as far as it went until they told the press that they had enquired, probably to save face on the Pedro deal.

Following RK's comments in the press conference there will be one (1) more player coming to the club as first stated it will be a CD.

He may well of said that but as the club (Les Reed) has also said that if there is a special deal to be had then we are in a position financially to do it

Apparently we're interested in signing James Tarkowski from Brentford, don't know much about this guy at all. Any thoughts?

As a club in the position that we are in (top third team and european) we should be looking at lower league players, we need at least 2 signings, 3 if anyone leaves, and they need to be real good quality, marquee signings if you will, will help the fans and the team get a real lift that we are bringing real quality. not hating on this Tarkowski fella but he isn't what we should be looking at.

Agree2 Disagree2

19 Aug 2015 14:13:09
yeah I would of hated for us to sign a lower league player like joe gomez.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 14:24:53
Can't say I know a whole lot about him, but I wouldn't immediately write off a lower league player just because of his status. Jay Rodriguez and John Stones are two that spring to mind, signed from Burnley and Barnsley respectively. Oh, and Clyne joined Saints from the Championship. He did okay, as I recall.

But I don't see this happening. Not as a solution to the Alderweireld-sized hole. Perhaps down the line, they might be looking at Tarkowski as a long term investment. Who knows?

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Aug 2015 16:19:23
Players like Clyne and Rodriguez weren't bought as replacements and went straight into the starting team. Tarkowski would be a replacement and to fill a hole as big as Alderweireld's exit, I don't think it would be right. Even stones wasn't a replacement, simply a youth backup who managed to get a break and it went well. Simply put, I don't think its worth the risk

Seems we have competition from Norwich for the signature of Koulibaly, hopefully shouldn't be too difficult seen as we have European football and it would be a shame to see him in the Championship next season.
