A newspaper has announced that Ron Vlaar will join Saints for the upcoming season. Thoughts?

Dire.

To replace Alderweireld with a slow, clumsy, injury-prone 30 year old who was truly awful last season would be quite the downgrade. Yes, I know, "he had a good World Cup". Five games in amongst five years of mediocrity (at best).

He's not even better than Yoshida. Might as well save on wages and not bother.

yes I agree with you which is why I think this may be coming from RV ot his agent's PR people / person rather than the club - who needs this deal most? Also read Les Reed about transfers - this is not a Saints rumour.

Good players don't just turn bad over night, last season he struggled with injury but the rest of villa's championship defence couldn't cope without him so he ended up having to play through them. If we get him, he'll be better this season, whilst I doubt he'll be playing much, he'll be protected in a much better defence and hopefully he'll have recovered from whatever injuries he had

IF the club do bring him in, it will probably be as some experienced backup. We need that, if we're without Fonte for any reason we're left with little experience at the back, Vlaar would be good for those situations. He's played in almost everything (champions league, uefa cup, World Cup semi final) he'll be cheap, free transfer, on low wages - he was on 25k a week at villa (that's half what Yoshida gets)

We could do a lot worse than him.

Sorry I forgot to say but I saw on touchline talk that the express announced the vlaar signing

I agree with saintysaintsaint, massive experience which would help us in cup games and tough away days. Fonte will need cover and I'd rather have vlarr than gardos.
Vvd to come in as Toby's replacement . Also Ron liked to play 3 at the back sometimes so Vergil vlarr fonte would be pretty solid

Haha, sorry but Yoshida is not on 50k a week. You made that up!

Ron Vlaars best years are behind him I'm afraid. I agree that we do need more squad depth in this position but really do feel that he is nowhere near good enough to be Toby's replacement. We do need someone of the ilk of Van Dyjk.

We need someone who has much better mobility then Vlaar does, it would make zero sense for the club to continuously refer to Vlaar as not an option if all along he was one on the shortlist.

Some of you on here seem to be world authorities on Ron Vlaar , how is this? Slow , clumsy?. I can only imagine you are completely assessing your thoughts on his performance against us in the 6 - 1 drubbing last season . Sherwood played him knowing he was injured out of desperation and also he was playing within a very poor team . If anybody has been following his career you will find he is ackknowledged as one of Europe's top defenders and only recent injury has slowed him down . If he had been playing for Saints and had this injury we would not have played him and would have .allowed him to have the op and the necessary recovery time . He is a top player only 30 and a free agent and once fit maybe picking up man of the match awards again on a regular basis . I am sure the club have looked in to his fitness thoroughly and will only sign him if they think he will recover completely . This could be a very clever move by SFC. Financially a very low risk option so the pro's outweigh the con's by a country mile.

"We need premier league experience" is what everyone says. So this guys an older experienced player, gives depth to a squad, is a CB which everyone knows we need.

You just can't please anybody. Everyone has their heart set of VVD, but, no one truly knows how good either of these players are - you have an opinion from a few matches ypu have watched and a few youtube videos. However, you don't know how they are in the dressing room, in training - you havnt watched every single minute of football they have played - out scouting team has and if they sign him he is good enough.

Lets just het behind whoever we bring in.

Yoshida 50k? How much does is Fonte on 100k.

I think we need to reinvest in a top quality central defender, who has both experience and some years ahead of them. Vlaar is injury prone and slow and we know that so why risk getting in another 'back up' when we need a 1st team replacement for Toby of similar calibre. Reed has also said there will be one more definite signing and that is to replace Toby. I'm hoping the board will attempt to sign like-for-like and I trust they will.

Reed also mentioned that if a player became available later on that fitted into the Saints philosophy (after they have found the number 1 target) then they may consider making a bid.

We had apparently bid for a number of players last week and Clasie was heavily publicised, but no news on the CD position - so maybe all those bids so far made were negotiating bids for Clasie?

Like 1 x 1 I'd like to see VVD in the team young, CL experience, great pace (positioning a little wayward at times but nothing that couldn't be solved by RK and the coaches), great passing range and interceptions .

Everybody keeps banging on about VVD and how great he is , I can't see how anybody knows this . Until you play at the very top level as in the upper half of the PL nobody can be assessed as good enough . CL experience are you really sure playing for Celtic actually means that much? Most of the top Championship sides could them a run for their money . Please stop knocking Ron Vlaar and look at his stats.

RV was quoted in the press as needing something removed from his knee to be fit for the season. I don't think he will be playing anytime soon and therefore we should get in someone else. Celtic player looks good but would he want to leave champions league football? I think it could be an outsider we don't see coming. Vlarr would be welcome as well of course especially as he is free!

He's out for 4-6 months after knee surgery. Again.

So I guess that's the end of that.

Shall we give him a chance before we decide he's going to be awful?
I for one have faith in Koeman and Co. to make the right decisions for the club.

He was never bloody coming… Total agent talk and lazy journalism.

We will be getting centre backs but concrete Ron will not be fit to play until next year and we will be well sorted by then.

People going on about Vlaar and his experience, and he'd add depth to the squad. Why? The experience, yes. But why do we need more depth? We've got Yoshida and Gardos for that, and even Martina. We need a quality CB for the starting eleven. Simple as that. Who, I'm not sure. But not Vlaar!

Come on guys, this is a free. We still have transfers left and the last two seasons have seen two brilliant loans come in. Still more to happen so accept this one as back up which gives more competition and mentoring which is ideal. Great back up imo. I envisage a loan somewhere along the line. Stop getting so excited that this is our main CB replacement. It will happen.

This isn't happening! He likely won't be playing til 2016 because of surgery and then recovery time. I dunno how many times Les Reed needs to say it for some of you to understand, he's not joining us!

The Ron Vlarr rumour back on again. Lazio have pulled the plug and he is available on free. That was on earlier.
