Toby Alderweireld and Sadio Mane have been confirmed. Alderweireld is on loan and Mane for £11.8 million.

Well that was a big tease. Judging from the interviews Koeman gave on both players, the deals were done sometime in the afternoon.

Interestingly, he briefly mentioned Ramirez (as a player Mane gave them something different to) as though he was going to be part of his squad, so I wonder what changed between then and this evening when they let him go?

Ah well - all done. Not sure the squad has huge depth, but the first XI plus three or four fringe players look pretty competitive.

Onwards.

Agree4 Disagree3

Quality work by the board. Wow we have lost some decent players but I'm hugely impressed with replacements.

Forster makes us slightly stronger in goal and long term much stronger due to his age against boruc.

Defence wise, the two quality centre half's more then replace lovern while adding much needed depth to go with Fonte and yos. Bertrand looks top of the pops at left back.

Midfield is as it was but I like the fact Koeman plays ward-prowse who could be our player of the season. NYSE and we kept Morgan!

Forward wise pelle looks a handful and I think in time will be amazing, tadic simple ='lallana who! Long will give his all and get minutes when needed. Mane looks amazing and I have huge hope for him.

Koeman v poch, let's be honest before anyone slags poch we were pretty much all gutted when he left, but by sounds of things the players were going anyway so gave new manager chance to rebuild squad. I think Koeman is a perfect fit and I applaud the board for getting him in. Massive fan of mr Koeman

Oh and on the board did they not say give them until the first of sept to judge them. Well the mr & mrs on the board top work and well done, you even us positive saints fans worried just a little but well Koeman and the new players = top marks from me

Great fun being a saints fan

I was initially very disappointed when I heard Gaston has gone out on loan, really think he is almost ready to show his true ability. However our superb new manager has I feel been quite clever here, he is over loaded with mid-fielders and probably the best way to assess Gaston is having him play for one of the lesser lights in the PL. He is almost certain to get first team football week to week and I'm sure the club will be having him watched on a regular basis. At the end of the season he either comes back to us or Hull will want to buy, if he does come good as I am sure he will, we will won't sell him to them because they would not be able to afford him. I think Roko and the board have got this one about right and I think our new look squad will be the envy of many. Don't want to stick my neck out too far but I think we'll be safe in the league sometime in March if not before. Tremendous resolve to keep Spider and for that the man that gets most of the stick needs some praise, well done Les Reed.

To me I think considering lovren was unproven before last season, we are going into this season just as strong if not stronger, especially the bench. Hope koeman gets things going early and proves the doubters wrong!

Nice to see people apologising. Fair play sir!
Really pleased. Think that if these two live up to the expectations which they should seeing those EPL after them recently, we could really prove everyone that we are a team to be reckoned with and after our third game showing we can work as a team already there is a lot of hope. Fingers crossed

Agree13 Disagree0

Don't get me wrong I'm as annoyed as all the other fans the way in which lallana went etc, however. You can't say that lallana who and how tadic is better, if we are honest lallana is the biggest loss out of all the outgoings he was a special player and did a lot for us before he got too big time and big headed. Finally not heard good things about the new defender gardos?!. apparently not very good at all and RK admits he made a mistake, think this will be another forren!

Agree0 Disagree7

Saintjamesc, quick question where did you hear this about gados as I have heard - though I have only slight help from insiders - that he is carrying a slight knock and is being eased back in.

Heard to date he as achieve everything if not more has been asked of him.

But like I said I have limited knowledge so would love to hear what I'm missing to fully understand how already he is being written off.

Many might say ( like I thought at one stage) signing another defender was enough to show he wasn't up to it but the contact I made with people with very little inside knowledge but then again a lot more inside knowledge then most tell me he's a quality centre half.

So help me understand what I'm missing please.

thanks Picky

As an answer to Picky I think we have always been lightweight defensively in numbers. It seems to me that this squad has been assembled for us to do well in the cup competitions the complete opposite to Poch. It has always baffled me why teams don't try in the League Cup when it is an instant way to Europe. We have Arsenal ok and that seems pretty tricky, however, can't see the Gunners putting out much of a team when the League and European Cup are definitely their ambition. Get past them and I really believe that Koeman will put a team out to qualify for the Europa Cup and also bring some long awaited silverware to St Marys. The fans love cup competitions and I think we are well equipped to win one of them.

Willsasaint; and others, just another loan deal?? Loan deals are the way forward my friends!

I wil we had a loan with a view to buy osvaldo as he will go for probably 7 mill meaning a loss of around 5 mill!

Toby and Bertrand are loans with a view to a permant move at the end of the loan if we wish to make them permanent. Great business southampton and dare I say it les reed. I was one of the les reed haters but putting my hands up and saying sorry.

But and there is a but! I will hold judgement to see what he does in January! Will spider still be a saint? I sure do hope so. But for now COYR!! Let's get win after win and show the premier league who we are!!

01 Sep 2014 21:26:36
Gaston Ramirez has gone to Hull on season long loan.

It is wild that we've let him go.

No depth in those positions at all.

Surely we must be signing Saido Mane AND Nathan Redmond to justify this.

Believable2 Unbelievable10

Gaston has never done the business! If struggling he can always be recalled

Agree7 Disagree4

01 Sep 2014 22:05:18
Exactly what has Gaston contributed to Saints progress over the last two seasons?

A few flashes of talent, lots of injuries, missing in 1st game of season, and lots of money.

Too much of a luxury for a grinding unforgiving league. Shame he's gone in a way, but prefer the new boys.

PS Commiserations to anyone who put Taider on their replica kit (or Vorren for that matter)

Agree5 Disagree2

Lets be honest now. He has never really had a good game for us and when he came on vs west ham he did like 3 good passes that is it! He is the player that never did and we are still giving him a chance by loaning him out.

Agree3 Disagree3

It's a shame he's gone just a few days after one of his most promising outings in a long while at West Ham, but he's brought little to the first XI for a year or so now. Injury prone, generally unfit and lethargic, he hasn't done his talent justice.

Weird that Saints didn't offload him to Sevilla when they had the chance - loaning him to a PL rival could bite them in the backside. But, ultimately, he's one of the squad's highest earners yet he never plays. Averages something silly like 30 minutes per game over the course of his Saints career.

Agree1 Disagree1

Gaston's got the potential to be great but for every good game he's had for us he's had a few mares. A season playing first team football for hull will be better than him sitting on our bench, hopefully he'll come back less injury prone and more of a consistent player

Source BBC

Believable11 Unbelievable1

EXCELLENT news, Mane and Toby are exciting young players. If they turn out to be as exciting as Tadic (so far the find of the season, very impressed with this player, lallanna who? and Pelle, we are in for a seriously good season. Our positions that needed strengthening have been filled. The board have come good on their promise.

Will they even give us a little treat by adding another unexpected player? We have money and we are now sitting in a commanding position with our squad ready to tackle the PL. Maybe something to good to refuse may come up? Saints go marching on!

Agree12 Disagree1

How about a swing for the fences type of player. Manchester City marksman Alvaro Negredo :)

or more realistic luxury signing of a former player of our coach John Guidetti from MC.

Spuds offer 14mil + Townsend for J. Rod.
Source: BBC

Believable2 Unbelievable8

This would be good business as we already have Shane "The Prolific" Long in our team and will have no problem with scoring goals without Jay Rod. . I don't THINK SO!!!

Agree5 Disagree7

Hopefully we have moved on from townsend. mane looks much more promising and would take the same kinda fee.

Agree3 Disagree0

Do the deal. what a great bit of business that would be. j rod still not fit no one sure how strong he will be when fit. done well for us last season. but not a great goal scorer. in my opinion misses a lot more than scores. pelle and long when played in correct position will be fantastic. Townsend with tadic will scare the hell out of most.

Agree4 Disagree12

01 Sep 2014 15:59:12
Sorry Smitty but you are SO wrong.
JayRod has the potential to be one of England's best strikers for years to come (if he comes back strong from his injury.)
I understand he smashes goals in from all angles in training, so suspect he will become a lot more prolific as he learns to manage in the EPL, and he is such a team player.
Townsend is selfish, and plays for his own headline, and is pretty injury prone. There are a lot better options available.

Agree9 Disagree2

With all due respect Francis benali used to bang goals in from anywhere in training.

Agree7 Disagree0

Good business IMO. Jrod done ok last year but didn't score enough for the positions he got in. Lots of pace but unless you play him as a striker he won't deliver in our current formation with wingers. don't get me wrong he is a good assett to saints, but when Townsend was on form last year he showed he has potential to be a lot better than jrod.

Agree1 Disagree9

I personally would cash in get Townsend and mane just for extra options. We never know what way j rod will go after this injury remember cisse and Torres had major injuries lost their pace never the same players but then u've got the ramsays that have had bad injuries n come back stronger but can we afford to turn down a Townsend plus 14 mill cash and he doesn't come back stronger I don't think we can

Agree1 Disagree6

I have to disagree - Townsend flatters to deceive and is injury prone - I'm much happier with Mane if he signs and keeping jrod

Agree4 Disagree0

01 Sep 2014 19:42:29
dantheman-I suspect you would want a player to show some loyalty and integrity towards the club but you seem to want us to discard a really talented player because he MAY not recover fully from his injury?!

I know what I would call that attitude, but the Eds. would not post it. The Saints are a family, if you don't buy into that you really should look elsewhere for a club to support.

Agree4 Disagree0

01 Sep 2014 11:31:11
If we sign Townsend and alderweireld I apologise to the board for my previous comments, except about the stadium, because with these two signings roko is sending out a message that only youngish international calibre players are good enough Alderweireld, Tadic, Townsend, Gardos, Forster = internationals. I was looking at Townsend last year before he got injured and I thought if we could get him he would have been ideal. Now I think Rodriguez on the left Townsend on the right Pelle up top with Tadic behind :) if they gel quick could b lethal and stronger and more goals than last year

Believable6 Unbelievable7

We were all angry that Lallana, Shaw, Lambert (and especially) Lovren left. let's not apologize, but see hope in the positive steps made by the board to rebuild the squad. If you got to be angry. be angry at those 4 players alone. they bailed out on contracts. they let the club down. and they let us fans down.

. let's all enjoy the fact we now have a proven European manager, who is much less arrogant than the last one, and we are truly on the right path to stability and long term success.

I save a tiny bit of anger for Mopo, but i'm glad we didn't try to stop him in the way Hoddle was lauded out of the club with banners crying "don't go".

see you down the job center in 6 months Poch.

Agree11 Disagree1

Townsend will not be joining saints, capel or mane to sign better options in my eyes

Believable13 Unbelievable4

Mane's not happening. He's off to Spurs. Looks like Saints have given up on Townsend.

Unless they've got something up their sleeve, it appears the likely winger coming in will be Capel (loan), Kacaniklic (loan) or Redmond. Not crazy about any of them, but Redmond would be an investment for the future, only 20.

Stoke interested in him, though.

Agree5 Disagree11

We've been scouting him for about a year so Mopo would of known all about him! Knicking are transfer targets! Low blow poch! But that's you underhanded!!!!

Agree8 Disagree2

Capel loan "almost done".

Bit underwhelming if that's the only wide player they bring in. Career's gone backwards in the last few years and I don't think he'll do very well in the more physical PL. Bit lightweight.
