Saints are being linked to James Chester of Hull for CD replacement!

Blimey Steve Bruce must be on the phone to Ronald as we speak asking for another 12 million and trying not to break out in laughter . Surely this isn't going to happen , we can do better for much less money.

Totally agree chrisdownj, I hope it's just lazy-jouralism and we invest in proven quality

We spent 12 million on Shane Long last year .

I wouldn't count anything out, especially now we are obviously in a desperate situation with a large bank account.

James Chester proven in the premier league over last 2 years and has clubs like everton after him

I read this and wouldn't mind him but he wouldn't be a starter.
If we are spending that sort of cash I'd rather have Jonny Evans. Much more experience, a better defender and cheaper.
But for my starting 11 it would Bruno Martins Indi all day long

An odd link. Chester's not going to sign to be 3rd or 4th choice CB, yet he's not better than Fonte or Yoshida, so are Saints really going to spend £10-12m on a back up defender when they could get a very decent starter for a similar amount? They allegedly bid way more than that for Alderweireld, so in theory the money's there for a proper signing.

I would've thought they'd make a big effort to get a high class replacement in for Alderweireld and perhaps try and sneak a little loan in for a back up option.

Interestingly, Jose Fonte seems to think another DMC is on the agenda too.

hi I am new.
Chester is a good player but Hull want big money. You don't want to spend over £10 million for him. Why don't we go back in for De Vrij

@ soton83, proven in a side that were relegated and struggled the season before, quality is open to interpretation, I don't think he is a player we should be looking at personally, especially if £10 million is the reported price, as qwertyell mentions I think we need to replace Toby like-for-like not buy someone who is worse than we already have

Interesting times

I remember people saying similar things about Cahill at Bolton but Chelsea bought him and they had the best defence in the league last year. I think Chester is a good player with great potential.Fonte was our worst defender in the championship and look where he is today. He was second fiddle behind hoovield and look what happened. As for Shane long, last season he proved he was worth every penny we paid for him. He's not going to set the goal tally on fire but he is an incredible team player

You will never ever convince me that we got a good deal with Shane . I like him
and he scored some important goals but I don't think any other team in similar league position to us like Swansea etc. has a 12 million pound purchase sat on the bench on a regular basis . We did panic when we bought him and I hope we don't do the same
thing again.

I love all this concern that RoKo would mess up the signing of a CB! Next, someone will suggest he needs some assistance from Brenda to help him find a goodun and how not to pay over the odds.

Gallagher widely reported to be going out on loan this season. If this is true SFC must be seeking another striker!

Gallagher would do well going on loan. As for attackers (note I say attackers not strikers as theae players would be adaptable) we have Pelle, Jrod, Long, Rodriguez, Juanmi, Mane, Tadic, McQueen

Am I missing anyone?

Gallagher going on loan does not mean we will get another striker - CB is the critical position currently.

We have plenty of striker cover - and could always play with a false 9 with our attacking players - if plagued by injuries.

Normally only use 1 striker anyway! :-)

Makes sense for Gallagher to get a loan (with a recall option). He missed the best part of a year of his development due to serious injury last season. It seems like he didn't impress the manager enough in early pre-season to make the squad to tour Holland, so why not try and get him some games against men, in the Championship or even L1.

Even if it's only for half a season, as long as he's playing regularly, that'll be so much better for him than U21 games and perhaps the odd 10 minutes off the bench in a cup game for the first team.

I had thought Seager would've been a good bet to go out on loan this season, but he's injured right now - don't know how seriously.

Pelle, Long, Rodriguez, Juanmi, Mane - they've got plenty of options who can play down the middle, especially as they usually only play one up.

Is Mayuka still with us? Stephens has been given his number from last season and he didn't travel to Holland with the squad. Not that I think we'd miss him; we've got two good players (well, with Cuco that's still to be seen) in every position, except CB - desperately need one, or preferably two, in that position as soon as possible. But everyone knows that.

Gardos out for 7 months - Koeman has stated that CB is now a priority and we will be signing 1 or potentially 2 in the coming weeks. Hopefully VVD.

Got a feeling with Celtic not wanting to lose VVD due to their CL commitments at the moment we will get somebody else in . We don't have time to hang around we need someone now , unfortunately other clubs will know we're a bit desperate and will probably ask silly money . I reckon we will get another loan signing till January maybe if we are keen to get Van Djik and maybe also get Vlaar as well when he is fit again . Trouble is who is available out there that is any good at the money we want to pay?

Precisely, when Toby didn't sign there should have been bids being put in to find his replacement as soon as it became clear he singed for spuds not let's wait and see, we looked depleted a number of times last year when we got injuries and this year if we want to improve or equal on last year we will need a bigger squad (not relying on youth, as they are not good enough)

As per usual, Saints doing their business quietly. But since media are all over Vlaar and VVD it seems to be that these two are the most likely candidates people are expecting. I wouldn't mind Vlaar coming in, as long as he isn't first choice (useful experience as well) but I can't help not liking the prospect of VVD coming, he has been playing at a lower league level, for the best club there, and he has been found out in Europe. His decision making, positioning, concentration, marking (Traits that Fonte excels in) doesn't standout. Plus celtic want silly money for him. I hope Saints have another name lined up.

I recently moved to Scotland and work with a Celtic fan who rates vvd very very highly. Unless you watch a player week in week out you can't really judge them.

Apparently vvd told voetball international that he is urging Celtic to consider premier league offers as he thinks he is better than Scottish league football and wants to get into the national team, I think as long as we don't spend too much on him it could be a great signing

tbf I wouldn't mind VVD coming in but I'm just saying that we could do better. Wern't we linked to Martins Indi last january? Mussachio and Astori in the past as well?
Honestly I would love it if Reed digs up a gem in the Italian division, say what you like about their (admitedly somewhat 'Boring') style of play but you can't deny they have an abundance in defensive talent over there. Just an opinion though. The black box will do its job.
