I think we need one more addition in this window, We are vunerable at the back now without Lovren. In reference to Shaw I think we all know he will go evetually but hopefully not too soon, and at the right price. I also think that we could do with an addition to the forwards? SRL seems to be going through a dry spell, Dani swinging left right and centre and J rod, although doing well is not ruthless enough in front of the sticks.

Believable10 Unbelievable1

I totally agree. I don't understand why poch us not making any moves whatsoever. Osvaldo obviously needs to go, i'm not questioning his ability, but he's Just not fitting in. We could sell him for at least 10 million easily, and There are loads of quality 10m strikers out there who would love to be part of a good premier league team.

Agree10 Disagree2

I think that we all agree, but don't get your hopes too high.

Agree5 Disagree2

What we need & what we get are going to be 2 differnet things I think. What playwr in their right mind will transfer to us now without any long term owner assurances for starters?

Agree7 Disagree6

No money for transfers atm. Who would pay 10 million for OSvaldo when they know we want to sell?

Agree6 Disagree4

"What player would sign for us"? Do me a favour. Mata just signed for Manchester United and there is no stability there or Champions League football on offer

Agree7 Disagree2

Why does Osvaldo need to go? I'm not supporting what he did in any way but none of us know the full facts of what occurred. One thing is certain & that it wasn't the "bloodbath" the press reported. How are we to know that Fonte uttered a few words under his breath to oslvado that would be inexcusable in any situation hence the reaction? You only have to remember Zidane in the WC final to see what reaction a few choice words in the wrong direction can do. Apologies to the OP & not wishing to hijack this thread but if Osvaldo makes his apologies & integrates back into the squad then I will fully support him.

Agree14 Disagree8

"What we need & what we get are going to be 2 differnet things I think. What playwr in their right mind will transfer to us now without any long term owner assurances for starters?"

Couldnt agree more, Its clear that keeping hold of our valuble assetts will be attractive for new owners, just hope we can keep our heads above water till then! I know we will be fine but we do need to add stregnth in depth to the squad and get rid of dead weight!

Agree5 Disagree3

I've tried to keep quiet regarding Osvaldo, other than to tell a few people that they need to calm down a bit.

As things stand we know very little about what has happened, but in the light of Kelvin Davies comments, I think it's fair to say that if Osvaldo makes a point of apologizing, and gets his head down, the players would accept him back. If he doesn't, then he won't have a future at Saints.

So, all we can do is wait and see.

Agree6 Disagree1

I personally think the reason we won't be making a signing in this window is because Poch won't be here in the summer. He seems unhappy and also unwilling to commit. The dream is obviously for Cortese to come back with more money than we already have, but it's seems unrealistic. A great deal of the club, if not all of the successes as well, are owed to the vision of the former chairman. We can argue he didn't pick the players, didn't coach them, didn't speak to them at half time with a rousing team talk to gee them up to win games. But it was he who convinced every single one of them of the "Southampton way". As it was him who hired the men to push us on at every step. And the ramifications of losing him are now reverberating throughout our football club. With the squad we have, we won't go down. We also won't challenge for Europe and our season will fizzle out with us finishing mid table. I'm certain Shaw will go in the summer, as will others. A new man will come in, and I really hope that we will build something for the future. But for now, just be realistic. We won't sign anyone. We probably won't sell anyone either. Just sit tight and hope that the summer is kind to us.

Agree4 Disagree6

Tuesday will be the acid test, without Dejan and Victor we will see if we can keep in touch with Arsenal or whether we will for 70 minutes and then collapse to a nice 3-0 defeat.

I'm also mega fed-up with the FA Cup draw. You just know we will field a weakened side and lose and then Gus will come out with all the 'magnificent victory' rubbish as usual.

The sheen is really starting to fade on this season and I really, really am not looking forward to another 'football' lesson at home on Tuesday.

I was nearly forgetting - no signings too.

Ho hum - onwards and upwards I guess. it could be a lot worse.

Agree4 Disagree9

Ref cortese I agre with some of what has been said however I can start to see what is being done here. For every one of nc's great contributions we ar bringing in people high up in their respective fields for that area. This with the addition of others will see us emerge with a much stronger management team that will continue the southampton way. i'm in agreement that this season is likely to fizzle out to nothing whilst this rebuilding takes place.

Agree5 Disagree0

If we don't buy another quality defender, capable of challenging lovren for a starting spot, we defo won't make top ten, let alone Europe.

Agree5 Disagree1

We'll easily make top 10 this season, lovren, as his injury is less severe, is only out for 4 weeks, arsenal, on tuesday, are the only team we are likely to struggle against without him, and who knows, maybe yoshida or hooiveld will raise their game for it.

Agree0 Disagree5

Jordan rhodes anyone?

Agree0 Disagree3

Doom and gloom, oh woe is me. My team aren't spending above their means, they have an owner who has backed them for the past three years, they have a team, I repeat TEAM of players, but we always want more, always find the negative. Because that's the way to ensure good things happen! There are no rumours here, just people fuelling the fire of failure, grow a pair, be positive, believe, your way you live your life in permanent disappointment, my way you only have to deal with it once.

Agree8 Disagree1

If you're really not looking forward to Tuesday and the thought of another footballing lesson v Arsenal. My suggestion ( if u have a ticket) would be to stay at home mate. don't need whingers like u at St Mary's.

Agree4 Disagree1

Agh! You can be a positive as you like! Don't tell me how to feel though. The chairmen who's every decision has taken this team from league one to here has gone. The owner has no interest in football and wants to sell. The manager is seeing out his contract but is far from happy, probably leave in the summer. It is obvious the squad needs improvement to maintain our position in this league and with what looks like no investment in areas we struggle there is only one way we are going. This isn't deal or no deal " if we think positive, it'll change nothing" these are the facts. All I hope is when she sells the club it's to someone who doesn't want to make us play in blue and change the clubs badge.

Agree1 Disagree2

I think it all depends where you are coming from! If you've been supporting and following Saints for 40 or more years [and there are plenty] you have seen all this before, I promise you.

Look at the club history. After the war we managed to miss out on promotion to Division One [the top league then] by the tiniest of margins three years on the trot. Once because we had no adequate cover for Charlie Wayman. We sold our best players. We promised so much. When then took nearly twenty years to get the top flight. It doesn't matter what season, what players, what owners, what manager, we seem to follow a similar path, so I for one cannot blame some supporters for being disappointed and cynical.

I know it's amazing that football was played before 1992 but it was.

If someone has bought a ticket they cannot be told what to think and are entitled to their opinion. I don't think any club can afford to tell supporters not to go. After all we rarely pack the stadium to capacity.

The question I ask do Southampton FC truly have ambition to challenge the Premiership status quo or are they just yapping about it to look good? In my opinion saying 'our squad is good enough' when it clearly isn't showing any ambition. Which is fine but just tell the truth and say 'We hope to establish ourselves as a good mid-table Premiership side'.

Nothing whinging or complicated about it, just don't build up expectations that cannot be met.

Oh and please strengthen the middle of our defence.

Agree1 Disagree1

Yes, it makes me laugh. Had you said to fans last year that we'd be in 9th place this season going into february this season, we'd have been over the moon.
If you'd have said it 2, 3, 4, or 5 years ago, we'd have been ecstatic.

The negative feel is purely down to our excelling up until November and hitting the heights of 3rd, and the uncertainty caused by Cortese leaving.

When we look back on this season, I think it will be an important season for us. Relegation isn't an issue, and further signings are only going to make us stronger.

I was primarily a Cortese supporter, but I am excited about the future of Southampton.

Agree0 Disagree0

The team didn't let us down tonight, but I have noticed in recent games we seem to concede a goal straight after scoring - although tonight it was two quick goals conceded, admittedly we are talking about Arsenal here. I wonder if we have some concentration problem here?

Oh well a few more days and then I won't be visiting the site so often.

Saints need to sell Shaw to a Champions league side, this is because the reason we attract so many promising youngsters to our awesome academy I'd the lure of a developmental springboard to a to club. The great young players don't want to be developed at top clubs then have no part in first team ending up on loan to lower league clubs. We offer great development, progression to the first team and then don't stand in the way of them furthering careers and opportunity to represent England and win trophies. The major teams in Europe all Hail from major cities, Southampton is not a major city. We can try to emulate Barcelona but we will never be a team to compete with those large cities, Milan, Munich, Manchester, London, Madrid, Paris, 'Southampton' easy to spot the odd one out. So regardless to our financial situation, desire to be a champions league club, we must sell Shaw to keep the chain flowing, Life long Chelsea fan Shaw to Chelsea, british transfer, good luck and all the best at the world cup Luke

Believable5 Unbelievable25

What a load of nonsense. It's about keeping the best players so we win games of football. You don't sell your best players just in case there is someone else coming through who possibly could be better!

Agree11 Disagree3

Thats ridiculous. A club that looks to sell their best players will never move forward. We don't need to sell and we don't want to sell. Simple.

Agree10 Disagree5

I agree completely. Not Shaw that Luke is going to become a Bale in terms of being an all out offensive player, don't get me wrong. I'm a huge fan, but can never see a full back going for 50-60 million! If an offer of say 30 million + add ons comes in. We would be mad to say no.

Agree3 Disagree5

That is a very defeatist attitude. To want to better the club, -having ambition, is not a bad trait. It has already been proven that we have sold some of our brilliant young players on the cheap. Bale being the obvious example. If Saints want to achieve, we need to keep our best players at the club. Milan Munich or Manchester, we might not be, but ask Wigan and Swansea fans about their last twelve months. Trophies are there to be won. OK, we only have a chance of winning the FA Cup, realistically, but all of our better players will be needed to do that- along with some luck. Luke Shaw is under contract. A 5 year contract.

Agree5 Disagree2

We are not talking about selling for 3 million like we did with Shearer or 10 million or so like we did with Bale! 30 mullion plus for an 18 year old would be very hard to turn down. Put it this way, how many Champions League teams most valuable asset play left back? To turn our club into a Barca or Bayern and so on would take ridiculous money. let's be realistic!

Agree1 Disagree2

Saints won't sell unless Luke wants to go. Wont be now but one would suspect it will not be long. Ambition and money are massive motivators. Don't want him to go but I am a realist. Just keep the sell on clause. :)

Agree2 Disagree2

Saints DON'T need to sell Shaw!

The message has been to keep the team together for 3 more years to allow us to develop a quality side based on our youngsters.

So long as Saints keep moving forward, young players are happy to remain at Saints, as they get to play week in and week out in a team challenging at the top end of the table.

No one is expecting these players to stay at Southampton forever, but they have their whole career ahead of them, and plenty of time for big deals, and medals.

On a side note, if Shaw is to be sold in the summer - since he will not go in January, you would expect Matty Target to start playing the odd game. With the rumours of Shaw to be sold, I expected Targett to be involved yesterday. No Targett = no Shaw sale.

Agree6 Disagree1

Fact is the person who will decide whether he leaves or not is Luke Shaw. People talking about Matt Targett (sounds like a seventies detective series) and other reasons why he will or will not go are like mystic megs who like football.

None of us as ordinary fans can really have any clue as to when Luke will say I would like a transfer please.

I do not want him to go as a saints fan but understand that when he is ready and the offer arrives that he wants, he will go. Unless we get lucky and he decides that it is saints for him for rest of his career. A man can dream eh.

What we have as a club at this time is the finance in place so there is need for us to sell him which is great when you look at just 5 seasons ago when we were selling to stay afloat.

Agree4 Disagree0

Selling Shaw for 30 million plus doesn't mean we lack ambition. Selling Lallana, J. Rod, Cork, Clyne. etc for 10 million or so apiece would show lack of ambition. Shaw appears to be a player on a different plain.

Agree1 Disagree4

Really! U would really want to get rid of shaw and be left with Danny fox!

What have u been smoking?

Agree6 Disagree1

Selling key players is lacking ambition unless you know you will be able to bring in better for the money. We could not replace Shaw with a better player and thus selling him for any amount would be foolish right now.

For the record, holding onto a key asset is really showing ambition. Clubs grow with key players who stay and help the club improve by building around them. Shaw appears to love it at Southampton and he knows other clubs do not approach things in anything like way we do. I could in all honesty see Shaw staying for his career and more players join. Big players are being attracted here now and that is enough to encourage other key players to stay.

Agree1 Disagree0

My reference with regards to Targett was a simple one. Poch mentioned about 7 kids that were capable of stepping into the breach due to the injury crisis in December, of which Matty Targett was one. With only Danny Fox as a recognized Left back (and yes Clyne or Chambers can play there too) one would expect a player ready to step up to Premiership football to be tried out in the cup, if we needed him to be ready to play for the first team regularly.

It's not about any kind of crystal ball - it's about the way in which Saints manage their kids.

Agree3 Disagree0

Missing the point. Which was who will decide when Shaw leaves us. Answer Luke Shaw. Our ability to cover his position will have nothing too with the final decision of whether he stays or goes.

Once he decides he wants to go (which may not be yet) and requests a transfer he will be gone.

There would appear to be at this moment in time some grains of truth in the rumour that united have enquired. Also a worry yesterday was that Chelsea goalkeeper after the game when being interviewed by the tv let slip that two more big signings are due at the bridge this week.

Fingers crossed saints fans that luke is not one of them.
