Hi Ed's, there's been a suggestion this morning we have agreed a deal with Sporting Lisbon for their right back Cedric. Any knowledge of whether this is a player we've been looking at and if a deal is on the table?

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - I didn't know of Southampton interest in him, although he is available and open to a move to England with Stoke having put an offer on the table. I guess that means the end for Clyne then.}

09 Jun 2015 20:29:04
Could just be back up as we have no replacement right-back in the squad. Europa league will need a full squad of players. Target/Bertrand clyne/Cedric

Cheers Ed002. My guess is Clyne's lack of response to the contract has pushed Saints into a smash and grab situation. As you say he's available, seems to fit the bill as an attacking minded right back as well.

we have previously stated that we need cover/competition at RB could just be that, we need a RB anyway, McCarthy can cover there but is really a CB

11 Jun 2015 04:17:06
Mccarthy will not be a cb whilst he is as young and he's played more at rb than cb for academy very similar to how a young striker with pace will be put in more a wing role before getting his preferred role like Walcott.

The sooner everyone gets to grips with Clyne and Spider moving on the better.
Both won't be with us next season.
They will be replaced though so don't hit the panic button yet

Reed is a Championship quality player and Saints should have bitten their hand off. Likewise Prowse. Their is a rumour that Saints are starting to look outside of the UK for foreign input into the Academy, about time. The Academy at the moment doesn't seem to have any Premiership possible players. Chelsea and Arsenal don't bother with English, etc academy people as they don't seem to be good enough.

Have you ever seen a saints game Larry1 we had 8 youth players play in the premier league this season alone, as for Chelsea the last youth player they produced that played regularly in their team was John Terry they don't produce anything they buy players, and arsenal youth players are the ones that we didn't want

09 Jun 2015 19:51:20
I have seen EVERY game last season. No other team would have played these players. Koeman had a thin squad care of that tosser Les Reed. The manager had no choice because of a small squad and the usual end of year injuries. He had to field these Championship quality olayers 'cus he had no choice. As soon as he had a choice, Prowse started on the bench.

I'm sure you're a brilliant PL manager Larry1, in your own mind. I guess Southgate is out of his depth picking JWP as captain of the U-21's. Rumor has it he's be in line for a full England call up after the U-21 Euro Championship.

Reed was the best player on the pitch in the home game against West Ham and made Song look championship quality, need to give the youth time to develop and not expect them the finished article in there first couple of games/seasons.

{Ed001's Note - I can't believe anyone would question Reed, he is one of the highest rated young players in English football. Every year I always ask around about potential stars coming through, the last few years Harrison Reed has been one that has been put forward as a future potential international player. More than one person has told me they believe he will be a future England captain, and I am talking about people within the game, not just Southampton fans getting carried away. One who said it is a Portsmouth fan, so he was defo not biased towards the lad.}

10 Jun 2015 08:16:51
It's an absolute joke to question reeds quality and with players like hesketh and target pretty much first teamers these guys haven't a clue what they are talking about ,laughable

I'd really like to hear why you think Les Reed is a tosser Southampton87 or Larry1? On what planet would we better off without him as our Director of Football?

Agree3 Disagree0

10 Jun 2015 14:30:44
Larry1 are you serious? Are you even a real Southampton fan? Because you really don't sound like it. So in your mind we fielded all these 'Championship' players yet we still managed to finish 7th in the premier league? Nice one

Why is less a tosser
Um let me think. We're broke till we sell player's. But hang on let's throw 11mil on long are u having a laugh. I said I believe reed is talented and a hustler but Hesketh don't get to carried away how many times do u think he played premiership games and target played how many times oh yes when he slipped on his ass and let the other team score Clyne was offered a contract and when he didn't sign koeman put Clyne on the bench and played target a bit more but that backfired and and he got dropped because anyone who went to game could see he weakened the teams defence because he ain't quite there he is miles from chambers who les wanted to sell another reason less is a tosser. And jwp going to get a England call up after Euro under 21 that is by far a long shot on his current form just look who is ahead of him be real.

When in the premier games last year did we field our youngsters. Oh yes we didn't apart from a couple of games target and reed played. mane, Tadic, pelle, schniederlin, Clyne, Bertrand, fonte, Toby, we're the performers that got us where we were not the youth.
Out of our youngsters reed and the young Scottish striker are the ones that have a chance.a few weeks ago everyone was on here naming quite a few they thought were good and most that were named just got released

Haha, well I'll give you your due, it was not a nice attempt at arguing your point, but you seem to deliberately miss by all accounts the things Les Reed has done for the club too. Let's start with the best one, stealing about £49 million from Liverpool, £30 million from Manchester United and £16 million from Arsenal for players who were nowhere near ready for the big time, all of whom have ended up bench warming or been injured. What a phenomenal message that was to all the smaller clubs across the country, yes you can buy our players, but it'll cost you a premium. Secondly, he doesn't get much recognition for it, but he is one of the reasons we find ourselves in the Premier League in the first place. It wasn't Cortese that got us here, it was Les and the players he had a hand in bringing to the club. As well as the re-development of the academy.

Saints didn't want to sell Chambers, the offer came in and he asked to leave. He could have said no I'll stay and continue to develop but the pound signs lit up in the back of his head, just like they did with Shaw.

We don't have a one in one out transfer policy either, I don't know where on earth you got that idea from. The club have said all along since Cortese left that they wanted to be self-sustaining, and yes that limits us from offering the big wages and transfer fees, but it doesn't mean we are incapable of signing someone until Schneiderlin and Clyne leave. Particularly as its increasingly likely their situations won't be resolved any time soon. The club won't stand still!

11 Jun 2015 08:08:12
Oh dear, we've just come 7th in the premier league and spent most of the season in the top 4. I'm not saying out youngsters got us there, but I don't think it's fair to say they didn't help at all. And another thing, without Les Reed, a large majority of last season's success would not of happened. Don't know how some people come on here and call themselves Southampton fans, it's laughable

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Jun 2015 13:16:56
Reed was good and has a future already said that and agreed but to say we played another of youngsters is a massive overstatement.
And the reason I sent in 4 in the morning is because I work nights and finish 6 in the morning but I guess fans that work daytime are only allowed to post in.

Being a bench warmer for arsenal and Liverpool is understandable considering the talent they have all the way through the squad chambers was a lot better than anyone gives him credit for his delivery was excellent for an example. and ox and Walcott were and most of the time til late were bench warmers but none of them were bench warmers when they were here

Reed has clearly been told to focus on doing the simple things and not to overcomplicate his game by trying outrageous through balls or elaborate passes, just win possession and keep play moving, which he does excellently for someone so young. He has excellent composure and reading of the game, I genuinely believe that whoever mentioned he could be a future England player was entirely correct.

As for the other youngsters, Targett hasn't embarrassed himself, but hasn't shone as brightly as he was once touted. I think he is a perfectly adequate backup to Bertrand and with a few games this season he could push on. Ward Prowse hasn't developed as much as most expected (injury didn't help), but all the same a reasonable squad player. I think this season will be a make or break for him. Gallagher looked to have decent movement off the ball but lacked composure in front of goal, but that comes with match practise and confidence, if used this season he could be a half decent player, a season long loan to the Championship could be a good move, especially seeing as Koeman doesn't seem particularly fond of him. Hesketh looked a bit lightweight when I have seen him, again maybe a season long loan to see how he fairs in the rough and tumble of the Championship may be an idea. We also have Turnbull and Stephens who spent last year at Swindon, who got valuable game time and could be handy squad players.

It is surprising that some people forget the year on year improvement our club has made!?!
Just because we are now a viable team on Fifa doesn't mean we can produce Gareth Bales & Oxlade-Chamberlains every season!?!

The fact southampton 87 couldn't even remember "the young Scottish striker"s name says it all about his apparent following of the club!

And Gallagher is actually English and playing for the English youth sides now. but never mind.

I have been hearing that if we miss out on charlie austin we will put a big bid in for Bamford of Chelsea, chelsea are asking for 10 million for him, in my opinion would be outrageous as austin is rated at 10 million himself, we are also not interested in man u's her nantes anymore or eder
