Saints need to sell Shaw to a Champions league side, this is because the reason we attract so many promising youngsters to our awesome academy I'd the lure of a developmental springboard to a to club. The great young players don't want to be developed at top clubs then have no part in first team ending up on loan to lower league clubs. We offer great development, progression to the first team and then don't stand in the way of them furthering careers and opportunity to represent England and win trophies. The major teams in Europe all Hail from major cities, Southampton is not a major city. We can try to emulate Barcelona but we will never be a team to compete with those large cities, Milan, Munich, Manchester, London, Madrid, Paris, 'Southampton' easy to spot the odd one out. So regardless to our financial situation, desire to be a champions league club, we must sell Shaw to keep the chain flowing, Life long Chelsea fan Shaw to Chelsea, british transfer, good luck and all the best at the world cup Luke

What a load of nonsense. It's about keeping the best players so we win games of football. You don't sell your best players just in case there is someone else coming through who possibly could be better!

2.) 26 Jan 2014
Thats ridiculous. A club that looks to sell their best players will never move forward. We don't need to sell and we don't want to sell. Simple.

3.) 26 Jan 2014
I agree completely. Not Shaw that Luke is going to become a Bale in terms of being an all out offensive player, don't get me wrong. I'm a huge fan, but can never see a full back going for 50-60 million! If an offer of say 30 million + add ons comes in. We would be mad to say no.

4.) 26 Jan 2014
That is a very defeatist attitude. To want to better the club, -having ambition, is not a bad trait. It has already been proven that we have sold some of our brilliant young players on the cheap. Bale being the obvious example. If Saints want to achieve, we need to keep our best players at the club. Milan Munich or Manchester, we might not be, but ask Wigan and Swansea fans about their last twelve months. Trophies are there to be won. OK, we only have a chance of winning the FA Cup, realistically, but all of our better players will be needed to do that- along with some luck. Luke Shaw is under contract. A 5 year contract.

5.) 26 Jan 2014
We are not talking about selling for 3 million like we did with Shearer or 10 million or so like we did with Bale! 30 mullion plus for an 18 year old would be very hard to turn down. Put it this way, how many Champions League teams most valuable asset play left back? To turn our club into a Barca or Bayern and so on would take ridiculous money. let's be realistic!

6.) 26 Jan 2014
Saints won't sell unless Luke wants to go. Wont be now but one would suspect it will not be long. Ambition and money are massive motivators. Don't want him to go but I am a realist. Just keep the sell on clause. :)

Saints DON'T need to sell Shaw!

The message has been to keep the team together for 3 more years to allow us to develop a quality side based on our youngsters.

So long as Saints keep moving forward, young players are happy to remain at Saints, as they get to play week in and week out in a team challenging at the top end of the table.

No one is expecting these players to stay at Southampton forever, but they have their whole career ahead of them, and plenty of time for big deals, and medals.

On a side note, if Shaw is to be sold in the summer - since he will not go in January, you would expect Matty Target to start playing the odd game. With the rumours of Shaw to be sold, I expected Targett to be involved yesterday. No Targett = no Shaw sale.

Fact is the person who will decide whether he leaves or not is Luke Shaw. People talking about Matt Targett (sounds like a seventies detective series) and other reasons why he will or will not go are like mystic megs who like football.

None of us as ordinary fans can really have any clue as to when Luke will say I would like a transfer please.

I do not want him to go as a saints fan but understand that when he is ready and the offer arrives that he wants, he will go. Unless we get lucky and he decides that it is saints for him for rest of his career. A man can dream eh.

What we have as a club at this time is the finance in place so there is need for us to sell him which is great when you look at just 5 seasons ago when we were selling to stay afloat.

Selling Shaw for 30 million plus doesn't mean we lack ambition. Selling Lallana, J. Rod, Cork, Clyne. etc for 10 million or so apiece would show lack of ambition. Shaw appears to be a player on a different plain.

10.) 26 Jan 2014
Really! U would really want to get rid of shaw and be left with Danny fox!

What have u been smoking?

11.) 26 Jan 2014
Selling key players is lacking ambition unless you know you will be able to bring in better for the money. We could not replace Shaw with a better player and thus selling him for any amount would be foolish right now.

For the record, holding onto a key asset is really showing ambition. Clubs grow with key players who stay and help the club improve by building around them. Shaw appears to love it at Southampton and he knows other clubs do not approach things in anything like way we do. I could in all honesty see Shaw staying for his career and more players join. Big players are being attracted here now and that is enough to encourage other key players to stay.

12.) 26 Jan 2014
My reference with regards to Targett was a simple one. Poch mentioned about 7 kids that were capable of stepping into the breach due to the injury crisis in December, of which Matty Targett was one. With only Danny Fox as a recognized Left back (and yes Clyne or Chambers can play there too) one would expect a player ready to step up to Premiership football to be tried out in the cup, if we needed him to be ready to play for the first team regularly.

It's not about any kind of crystal ball - it's about the way in which Saints manage their kids.

Missing the point. Which was who will decide when Shaw leaves us. Answer Luke Shaw. Our ability to cover his position will have nothing too with the final decision of whether he stays or goes.

Once he decides he wants to go (which may not be yet) and requests a transfer he will be gone.

There would appear to be at this moment in time some grains of truth in the rumour that united have enquired. Also a worry yesterday was that Chelsea goalkeeper after the game when being interviewed by the tv let slip that two more big signings are due at the bridge this week.

Fingers crossed saints fans that luke is not one of them.
