I'm just reading that Leicester have met the release clause for Jonny Evans, supposedly £3.5m which to me seems like an absolute steal for a player of his ability and experience. Can't help but think he could have been an ideal addition to the Saints backline, and for what is this days peanuts in terms of money - Thoughts?

I'd say its almost impossible we haven't looked at him, but I really doubt we'd get him to come here. Unfortunately after last season, we are a less attractive proposition than the likes of Leicester and Everton, and not just for financial reasons.

I would imagine his age has counted against him in our thinking- the club aim still being to bring on mid-20's players with a mind to improving them and selling them on. £3.5m now is indeed cheap, but you won't profit. Contrast the 1-2 million you might get moving Evans on again to the Virgil sale and you can understand their logic!

Targets like Gibson and Mawson are strong leaders AND have future potential, so I reckon that is the direction we will be heading. I definitely think this does create the risk of a leadership void at the back again though, as we saw this season- I guess we won't know until they all line up in August.

Probably 120k a week Ona 4 year contract plus 2-5 million signing on fee, bit rich for saints.

Decent player but age and wage counting against him.
