Ed are you able to give us any info on clubs interested in targett and Bertrand please?

Targett linked with villa. Apparently there are clubs interested in RB too.

Apparently we are willing to sell one of them. I was hoping we would keep both. I understand Bertrand is maybe blocking targetts progression but I just don't think letting RB go is a wise choice. I still think he's too good to let go, and could also cover centre back too.

Cheers.

{Ed002's Note - (a) Fulham and Aston Villa. (b) Not aware of any.}

Morning eds

Whenever you're ready to or have sufficient information would you be able to tell us of interest in our players. including the ones that are already out on loan, the ones that we are hoping to shift and the players that we wish to keep but may have alerted other clubs with their decent/ improved form. please?

Many thanks.

MilkySaint

{Ed002's Note - I don't think there is anything new just yet.}

1.) 14 May 2019 16:56:14
Early days I guess. Thanks anyway! Hope you get some downtime before silly season start! Lol.

"Southampton have made an offer for Palermo's Macedonian pair Ilija Nestorovski and Aleksandar Trajkovski. "

Just seen this posted on the main site. any truth? Any idea of who they even are? Lol.

MilkySaint

1.) 14 May 2019 18:27:49
I think that Nestorovski is Palermo's captain but other than that I don't know anything about him. Can't say I've even heard of Trajkovski.

I know we are not yet mathematically safe yet eds, but we're getting there. so. wondered if you had any news. on players we have interest in or that other clubs have in ours. saw a post elsewhere that wolves had "agreed deals for Redmond and vestergaard" which sounded like laughable BS but I imagine there will be some. intereted parties in the likes of jwp, hojbjerg and Redmond.

MilkySaint

{Ed002's Note - Nothing has changed - to my knowledge various levels of interest has been shown in the following, but I have not checked for a while:

Rafael Toloi (CB)
Gary Cahill (CB)
Kalvin Phillips (DM)
Danny Drinkwater (CM)
Thomas Goiginger (CM)
Andre Schurrle (LW/F)
Edin Dzeko (S) an enquiry has been made but I doubt it will go anywhere
Danny Ings (S) loan to permanent
Shoya Nakajima (S)
}

1.) 18 Apr 2019 21:38:43
Many thanks ed.

2.) 19 Apr 2019 19:03:10
Cahill, Drinkwater, Schurrle and Dzeko are too old in my view. Not sure about Toloi and Nakajima but I like the look of Goiginger. I like the look of Kalvin Phillips who I think I'm right in saying can play centre back as well as defensive midfield but would Leeds want to sell especially as it seems like they may be in the Premier league themselves next season.

3.) 20 Apr 2019 00:41:04
Fancy a return to the transfer days of old. One day we’ll see a tweet announcing someone we haven’t been linked with and hardly anyone has heard of, and he’ll fly.

Not sure why but I could see Ralph bringing in a Dzeko-type (not Dzeko, too expensive) - a proven goal scorer who’s a bit older but has the experience and nous to mould with the young vibrancy of our attackers which could complement each other nicely. Someone like Modeste of Köln - 31 but averaging 15 goals a season. Or Lewandowski or Müller.

4.) 01 May 2019 13:31:06
You say Dzeko too expensive, then you mention Lewandowski or Muller lol, they would be even more expensive and way out of our league.

All been very quiet on here for a while. unlike some. of the other club pages!
Ed I know you're getting hassled left, right and centre on some of the other pages, but wondered if you had anything new for us in terms of transfers in/ out and what the plans are for our many loanees.
Thanks.

MilkySaint

{Ed002's Note - I know of nothing new at the moment and much will depend on where Southampton end up at the end of the season.}

1.) 29 Mar 2019 10:15:21
Pretty much what I expected lol. Thanks for the reply 👍.

2.) 29 Mar 2019 21:09:38
Supposing that we do stay in the premier league MilkySaint who would you like to see in / out?

3.) 31 Mar 2019 10:53:51
I wrote out a pretty long and detailed response teejay and then deleted it by accident so let's hope this one makes it! 😂

I'm not in the know enough about who I'd want to bring in. we're obviously not going to be bringing in big names or spend mega money and my knowledge of the football world. isn't what it used to be.

We do however have a squad that is far too big when you consider the players we have out on loan so my list of who should leave is a bit more comprehensive.

I think Austin will leave this summer and possibly long, although the manager might like him as an option off the bench. Ralph needs to decide if Gallagher is good enough to make the grade and actually play at this level. If he can't consistently challenge for a starting place then I feel we should let him. go for the sake of his career. That could potentially leave us with just ings and obafemi, so we desperately need at least one striker who can score and stay fit. Carrillo isn't going to play under Ralph I doubt, so let's find a buyer for him.

I would like to see whether boufal can be reintegrated and push himself to Ralph's standards of effort and fitness. If he can then we may have a real player on our hands. If not then he has to be SOLD and not just loaned. Again sims and hesketh need to either grab their chances in pre-season or be sold to further their careers instead of wasting it as back ups to our back up. I may get shot down here but I would love to see lallana back. His wages are probably too high but his quality on the ball and pressing is still great, if he stays fit for long enough. He would add creativity that we lack behind the front men.

I think our midfield is very good as it is so I don't think we need any additions. other than getting hojbjerg signed on a new contract! If we got offered decent money for lemina I would be happy to let him go. This would possibly give an opportunity to Harrison reed to step up and finally challenge for a place in the first team. He's had 2 successful loans in the championship. Like sims and Gallagher its now or never really. Clasie should hopefully be sold or released this year.

At the back I think Stephens should be sold. I just don't think he quite has the quality for the premier league. Hoedt needs to be sold, even if it's at a loss. Ralph doesn't rate him. We need a new RB to challenge with Valery and a new competent, demanding, top quality CB to in alongside bednarek with vestergaard and yoshida providing back up and competition. Targett and Bertrand are good a LB. Gunn is obviously our number 1 now so one (or both with a replacement) of McCarthy and/ or forster should be sold too.

This would raise some. decent funds and cut the wage bill, allowing for a higher grade of player to join the squad. our sales department have their work cut out this summer! Haha.

4.) 31 Mar 2019 16:56:00
I agree with pretty much everything you say Milky. I would love to see Boufal back provided that he has grown up a bit and has a better attitude. Maybe Ralph would get him into the right frame of mind. Lemina can do a good job for us when he's in the mood but he seems to have too many off days. We definitely need a good striker in and Austin, Long and Carillo sold. Bednarek is our best central defender by far and we need another in to play alongside him. I agree that Yoshida and Vestergaard are good back up options. Left side of defence pretty good but back up needed for Valery. I also agree with shipping out McCarthy and Forster and bringing in a younger keeper to back up Gunn. I see your point about Lallana but I really don't think that I would want him back nor do I think that he would take the sort of drop in wages required to rejoin us. I'm hoping that Ralph has a couple of players in mind that he feels will fit with his way of playing. Everything is hypothetical at the moment of course as we are not guaranteed to be playing premier league football next season yet but yesterday's result and Chelsea's lucky smash and grab at Cardiff has given us a little breathing space. Hopefully pick up a couple more wins and we'll be safe. Really looking forward to a full season under Ralph.

5.) 31 Mar 2019 18:18:51
We've suffered some dodgy decisions in our time so. while it is harsh on Cardiff, I'm glad. it gives us a little breathing space. No time to take our foot off the gas though. Need to keep pressing on. Yes hypothetical, but may be some of the names we were linked with in January will come through. Che Adams and mearhle the Danish RB?

6.) 01 Apr 2019 12:37:03
Adams gone a bit quiet last couple of weeks but still rate him. With Birmingham struggling and could even be relegated he could be available for less than originally thought. Can't comment on Mearhle as I've not seen much of him.

7.) 02 Apr 2019 16:36:37
Don’t really want us to splash mega cash - no big money signings have ever worked for us. Buy several young players for £6-10m, who can prove themselves and show off to the rest of the world in a Saints shirt.

Get rid of the six or seven pieces of deadwood and replace them with five young, fit, energetic players who will fit Ralph’s style, and we could push Wolves for seventh and potentially Europe next season.

Also feel like Ralph could win a cup if he’s with us for two more years.

Article on Marian pahars

What a legend.
Also, gives a little insight in to the role fans play for the players. we can help those on the pitch and lift them, or we hammer them and make their lives and job harder. Makes you think.

Ed001 not saints related but, I was reading through the Utd page and saw your views on Maguire and have read your opinions on other cbs notably Ben mee.
My view on Maguire from watching him in the league and for England is that even in today's silly money and premium for British players, he is a 30million pound defender at best. For me he's not a HUGE amount better than vestergaard is for us! Lol why is it that utd feel he is worth 70mill and pretty much hoping that he "van dijks" there defence up the table, when there are players like Ben mee whom you've mentioned and praised quite a lot that must be a 1/ 4 of the price? . is it just media hype around players like "slabhead" and clubs like Utd jumping on the bandwagon?

Similar with arsenal and zaha. yeah ok he's a good player, temperament is pretty poor. but surely they shouldn't even be looking at him with their budget and the fact they need to sort out their defence etc with some solid reliable players? .

MilkySaint

{Ed001's Note - the answer lies in poor scouting, in my opinion. These days teams are more interested in how a defender can pass the ball than how good a defender he actually is. Stats are taken out of context and mishandled badly to shape recruitment policy. That is the issue. They look at Mee and give all the credit to his partner at the back, when his partner then gets sold for a large amount and struggles badly, while Mee carries on with a new partner defending just as well, they then decide it is the new man who is good! No one seems to actually understand defensive positioning any more.

As for Arsenal, they are a mess, they recruited a manager known for being ineffective at organising a defence then wondered why the team can't defend!

Southampton's black box was so good because it got the context pretty much right when it was examining stats. Most other teams are introducing stats analysis but have their context wrong. It is a tricky field because it depends on opinion so much due to the lack of information to work with. You really want to judge players over thousands of performances to iron out anomalies such as luck and really gauge their level. Because they are only playing a maximum of 60 or so games a season, you can't do that, so you are having to work a fair bit on opinion. You then have the opinion of which stats are more important. For a long time it was all about pass completion stats as possession was all important. Now teams are beginning to realise that possession is only a part of a whole, but some teams are behind the curve. United have been overhauling their recruitment, but they still have a long way to go and need someone to take charge, a DoF or similar, and make those decisions on which stats are more important for which position, so that scouts can check out the right players.

I am so sorry, I was getting a bit carried away then. It is a subject I feel passionately against. I get so fed up with stats banded about without anyone actually taking the time to figure out the context to place them in. No one looks at the context when it is the most important thing of all. Man Utd are suffering from that now, which is why they bought Pogba, without understanding how to get the most from him or how he would fit in their side. It is why they jumped in for Sanchez and Fred and now Maguire.}

Southgate slipping in to the ways of previous management and sticking to his "big names" that have done noth8ng all season, instead of picking those on merit and in form. how on earth has trippier got in ahead of wan-bissaka I don't know. Unbelievable that. loftus-cheek has looked promising for England. but he's barely played for Chelsea this season through either injury or just not being selected. And Ross Barkley is pretty much the same. Hardly set the world alight. And then jwp, BANG in form, 5 goals in 8. nothing.
Eds do you have an opinion on this?

MilkySaint

1.) 13 Mar 2019 17:51:30
JWP should've been called up. However, 3 weeks in our camp will be much better for him then 2 weeks with Southgate and will prevent any injuries.

2.) 14 Mar 2019 23:42:27
I feel sorry for JWP as he should have been called up but I agree with saintjay . 3 weeks training with the rest of the squad with RH getting them all both physically and mentally fit for the last few weeks of the season will be better for Southampton FC and us as fans. Hopefully 3 wins and 2 draws from our last 8 games.

I heard Charlie Austin had a fondness for getting boozy and probably not looking after himself physically enough. I also remember reading about Jack wilshere and his lifestyle of drinking, smoking etc. They obviously suffer with injuries and I remember in my younger days drinking a lot and suffering with a lot of injuries. Since I cut down on boozing those injuries are less common but have effected my body and quality as a player.

ANYWAY, my question is, what other players in the prem have questionable lifestyle, drinking, smoking (drugs? ) And are they risking or ruining their careers?

Hassenhuttl has said our business is not done yet and they are looking at options. This probably means one of maehle or the Norwegian lad with the morrocan name (I'm not spelling it lol) and probably che Adams which would allow Austin to leave if someone bids for him.

I know we’re normally quiet about all transfers let alone deadline day deals but I would have expected something by mid afternoon, even murmurings of a player at the training ground or something of the like. Can’t see anything happening at this point but I’m not overly concerned by relegation at this point either way.

Probably the fact that he would rather remain close to the south coast rather than play in the Midlands too. his parents still live locally. he also has a family, Mrs etc. I doubt it's to do with playing premier league, necessarily. if a championship club from London offered to sign him and paid the same wage he would probably go.

I think until a load of players leave most of our efforts will be concentrated on finding a new CB instead of another winger or forward, for now.

If/ once we manage to sell boufal, Carrillo, clasie etc it'll free up some funds and make space in the squad. We still have too many players as it stands. We can't just add more.

Got a winger, got a striker, centre back is next on the list.

Shane long surely worth keeping. Just let him go on a free next summer. We know what he offers and I'm happy to have him as back up for ings and (hopefully) Adams.

Apparently Matty targett off to villa. That really is a shame. Stephens has to go for me. He's worse than hoedt! Championship level AT BEST.

Would love to see boufal come back with a vastly improved attitude, application and end product and be able to jump in with Ralph's philosophy. he'd be a world if he did. can't see it happening myself though.

Not a fan of mooy and not sure about Why lookman doesn't play more. Can any of the eds (001, 002, 025?) answer that?

{Ed002's Note - Everton are lopsided and that results in Everton having some odd line ups.}

Armstrong has food poisoning
McQueen is still probably recovering from doing his ACL
Reed my possibly be still recovering from an ankle injury as saintJay said. but could still be sold. As for the rest the club are actively looking to get rid so better that they don't travel and have a better chance of finding another club.

Amazing how many fans still don't realise that we are OBLIGATED to sign Danny ings. He is essentially a Southampton player. Not just a one season loan signing.

Having Gunn as a number 2 is also a pretty terrible shout. He's a good keeper, did very well at Norwich. we didn't spend 13 million on him just to be a number 2 keeper. He also didn't leave man city and sign for us just to be a number 2 either.
He will be our number 1 for hopefully a good couple of years.
I imagine one of either forster or McCarthy will go and the other will provide back up. or we will sell both and buy an experienced keeper as back up.
I agree with most of the rest of your post, Jay. I'd also like to see if boufal can adhere to Ralph's methods (not actually confident he will though) but I don't see what carrillo has done either with us or on loan this year to warrant being selected. he doesn't even seem to fit Ralph's idea of what he wants in a striker. If you want to keep him we may as well keep Gallagher, there about the sake level in terms of ability.
