Pellegrinos comments on the fact that the club had lined up 2 players to come in then went elsewhere does make you wonder a few things.
1. What were the calibre of these players and who are we losing out to in the tansfer market.
2. Why are we losing out to other clubs if these are our top targets. (I would imagine its down to wages but who knows)
3. This just goes to show that our club really does go about things like some sort of super spy because there have been no rumours of a players we're interested in, and then you seen them go elsewhere.
4. Pellegrino obviously has some concerns about the squad maybe the same as the rest of us fans. (We can only dream he is seeing what has been so clear to us since january no creative sparks, lack of quality in central midfield to compliment romeu and a poor defence) . The last of them points with him being an ex defender himself i'm sure he would pick up on.

Has anyone got heard any actual rumours of incoming players I mean I know our signings usually come from nowhere and its always pretty quiet on our side but this is just plain deafening. I mean I can't find anything.

I gather we are or have at least enquired about someone at lazio, but whether that's hoedt or balde, keita or either is anyones guess. I just don't believe we are not going to sign anyone of any significance to enhance and challenge for a first team place.

Saintdan16

1.) 02 Aug 2017 16:35:22
Only players I've seen rumoured to us are Allan from Napoli, Hoedt, patrick roberts and chris wood. Can't see us being able to get Keita Balde given the other teams he's been linked to, but I'd love it if that were true.

The more I look at it the more I think we are going to be the ones signing ben gibson if the price is right he suits our profile perfectly young (ish) english good personality. But I would ratger stephens kept his placr he was an immense fonte replacement for me last year and if we sign a cb I would like an experienced international not a 1 season wonder like gibson think stephens and vvd could be the perfect pairing. Though we do 100% need a goalscoring midfielder in the mane mould to take people on and open space for others if we're going to push on.

Saintdan16

1.) 20 Jul 2017 18:42:48
I was thinking the same re. Gibson - seems like a good fit. Agree on the mane replacement but that's just so hard to find.

2.) 20 Jul 2017 19:21:16
It is hard to find but even just a player who will take people on with the ball maybe redmond will b that player for us he just never seems to pick the right option for me but then again neither did mane in his first season.

04 Apr 2017 12:28:37
Where has austin gone I heard the other day he was back in training we could do with his goals with gabbi being injured. I can't wait to see us at full strength with gabbi, tadic (at his best), boufal, austin, jwp, redderz, j rod where r they all going to play.

Saintdan16

1.) 04 Apr 2017 12:48:57
I wouldn't worry about it,1 if not 2 of those won't be here next season.

2.) 05 Apr 2017 23:51:01
i would love to see j-rod develop and become what he once was, but he just isn't getting that opportunity to get game-time and build confidence. Be interesting to see what's up with tadic at the end of the season after his little problem with puel.

Hi Dan

Jittery stuff though opinions on Alli, Sterling and Ashley Young, we can't play all of them regards vs and Walker?

2.) 04 Jul 2018 04:18:06
Imagine if there was a better English left back than Ashley young, he’d probably be out in China with his club team right now.

3.) 04 Jul 2018 05:39:30
Alli is not fit should e stuck with loftus cheek, and rashford should be starting ahead of sterling (has been carried by his man c teammates all season) imo and lb is a problem but young is more solid than rose from what I've seen.

4.) 04 Jul 2018 07:55:26
Hi Dan
I absolutely agree regarding lotus cheek he offers much more of a physical presence on the right hand side rather than Alli. Sterling does put in a lot of work but needs to produce more ie goals.

5.) 04 Jul 2018 10:48:36
Just don't feel we can carry sterling and keep waiting for him to turn it on bring in rashford and sterling just might produce more as a sub with his pace at the end of a game when players are tiring. Also I was thinking just how out of place vardy looks at international level it's worrying me for if Kane picks up even the smallest of knocks.

6.) 04 Jul 2018 17:07:23
Agree with the sterling thing, but not vardy. if england played to his strengths he can be used brilliantly. surprised he didn't take a penalty tho. did he have a knock? eric dier though. very surprised he was the man.

7.) 04 Jul 2018 22:56:32
I just don't think Vardy is suited to the way England want to play. That's not a knock on him, but at the same time would be the reason why he wouldn't be involved if I were in Southgate's shoes.

Agree, Rashford over Sterling imo. I'm tempted to say neither, so we can play Loftus Cheek and then Alli in behind Kane, but I think we do need one player who can really run at defenders, so Rashford would just about get the nod for me.

01 Feb 2018 08:07:10
So from the starting line up last night there is no goalscorers in the side (ie long, tadic, jwp, davis, romeu, Hojberg not 1 prolific goalscorer) . Why can't we play carillo with the three behind him tadic right, boufal left and gabbi as a second striker with Hojberg and lemina sitting. I know which forward team I'd rather have and which is more creative and has more flair and will get u more goals. It's simple why can't the management see this.

Saintdan16

13 Jan 2018 23:01:33
We desperately need a leader on the pitch I see no leaders in our squad since fonte left it was meant to be vvd but he spat his dummy out Davis is a no2 vice captain, good follower to set an example not a leader. We need a winner for lead this team and turn them around on the pitch.

Saintdan16

1.) 14 Jan 2018 00:18:47
I do kind of agree. We need our young core - players like Ward-Prowse, Redmond, Hojbjerg, Lemina, Hoedt - to take responsibility, step up and make it their team. I do believe those players are good enough get us back to something like what we should be.

2.) 14 Jan 2018 01:28:45
Watched the game today and I hate cliches but this was a game of 2 halves
What the hell did our half time team talk consist of because our first half was the best we've played all year with out a doubt we had pace up front ran the game from start to finish but second half omg
What happened
Why are we losing games like this ok I understand Watford must have had a grilling at half time but they still got to score
So how does this happen massive 2 points lost
Massive
Pellegrino must be thinking what do I need to do to get a win
There's no way on earth last year we would have shipped these goals so late
This season will be the season of missed chances Shane again had a couple today
Gutting result.

3.) 14 Jan 2018 07:18:28
I was wondering if the bad second half performances may be down to the team's fitness? The whole team just suddenly seems to come out with no energy. They either need to get fitter or have a couple of red bull's at half time.

4.) 14 Jan 2018 08:30:50
I've been saying for a few weeks that I don't think they are fit enough. We're not closing down like we used to and we plant last a full 90 without looking dead on the pitch. To not be fit enough is absolutely criminal, and yet another task that the manager should take responsibility for.

5.) 14 Jan 2018 10:39:20
I don't know if it's fitness or general enthusiasm. The team seems to have their energy sucked out of them. But I don't understand any of the tactics anymore. We're playing 4/ 5 center midfielders at the same time. Surely the manager goes in at half time and says just keep calm keep the possession in our favour. Or sit back and play on the counter. In that case the manager should look at bringing on Redmond/ Boufal.
I'm sorry but all fingers need to be pointed at the manager. That's another commanding lead we've dropped in this terrible winless run of games.

10 Jan 2018 08:05:14
Gaitan and carillo would change the dynamic of our attack dramatically which is much needed if we could get Walcott as well to add some pace think that would do us nicely.

Saintdan16

1.) 10 Jan 2018 14:10:55
We already have pace - Shane Long is very fast still and gets on the ball in many goalscoring opportunities, he just seems to have the yips in the box.

We have Charlie Austin who is the exact opposite - likes to crash through onto a cross - plus we have Gabaddini who plays on the shoulder of the defender and anticipates balls through the lines.

I think if you played 2 up front and shaped the final third to suit their needs we would get more goals. Play the ball in sooner / more often to the danger zone (14) between the D and the box and pick up the percentages.

I was trying to find data on OPTA about the number of times City play the ball into the oppositions penalty box / D - but I can't find it - bet my house its 3 x the Southampton stats.

I think we look pretty good in defence and good to strong in midfield - its just what we do in the final third that needs work. One of the coaching sessions I went to recently we were told to forget about football for a minute and just consider this as an invasion game. How would you (coaches) plan a game where you has to invade to opposition box with as many players as needed to get a goal.

Well its obvious really - all of them. Actually it got too crowded - so we then had 2 rows of invaders - then the rules changes and the other side could counter attack - do the same back - so we needed a defender - but we decided 2 were better - so we eneded up with 2 defenders 3 midfielders and 5 attackers - YES we had reinvented football from its most exciting age (apparently) - in the 1920s and 1930s - the Pyramid.

Read Inverting the Pyramid.

You know who had the same set up in modern football - Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich - he gets it - the more attackers you have the more goals you score.

FU2.

2.) 10 Jan 2018 18:50:52
I agree we need to change the dynamic up front or at least play to the strengths of our current squad.

I just hope we don't go for Walcott he is too like Redmond, quick but no capacity to out-think a defence. And the reason he's not a regular in the Gunners team is he doesn't score enough goals, so how will moving him South sort that out.
I remember Redmond up against Stokje at the end of last season couldn't get past there right back once, and kept doing the same thing with the same result - embarrassing.

MP needs to change his tactics depending on who is up front, Gabbi and Charlie are son different playing with the same style doesn't can't work for both of them. I agree that MP seems inflexible - I would love to know what style Charlie, Shane and Gabbi would vote for if they could decide!

Looks like it could be a long run in.

3.) 11 Jan 2018 10:13:38
Come on Saints get the cheque book out and make some signings PLEASE!

4.) 12 Jan 2018 10:37:06
Guys why do you think we are only interested in loan deals? we have only recieved 23 million upfront for VVD and that goes down to 17 million after paying Celtic the sell on clause money. Worring times.

The Times reports that the sum will be paid in instalments and that they are only guaranteed to get £17m now.

It means that the south coast outfit could be looking for more modestly priced players than some fans would have expected, and whether he costs £8.8m as per his reported release clause or £4m, Prijovic would certainly be an interesting addition to the Saints squad.

5.) 12 Jan 2018 17:13:48
You really need to forget this stuff about the payment structure. That's just how deals are done, especially larger ones, and anyone we buy would be on a similar basis.

It's common ignorance which is fine, but when you start criticising the club and using this as evidence of "worrying times" then I start to get annoyed. It's not a cause for concern in the slightest, it's just how things are done.

6.) 12 Jan 2018 18:26:34
And Pellegrino has also underlined that the club are looking at permanent deals rather than loans, so not sure why you think otherwise.

The lesson - don't make 123 angry. He's like a forum Hulk.

7.) 12 Jan 2018 18:56:04
Saint Ben, however the payment for VVD, saints could simply make a similar deal for a player they are interested in. Also any payment to Celtic would be the percentage of what saints receive as and when they receive it.

I understand your concern about loans, my understanding was saints were only ever interested in a loan for TW but AW was only interested in a sale. I think this made sense, he is not what we need long term but short term would be relatively risk free and there are permanent targets according to MP2.

09 Jan 2018 08:10:48
Nearly a week and half into the transfer window and still nothing happened surely we could have been trying to sound out and thrash out terms on incoming players before the window opened? Wtf is going on at our club. Frustrated to say the least.

Saintdan16

1.) 09 Jan 2018 08:46:26
How do you know they weren't trying to sound out and thrash out terms on incoming players before the window opened?

2.) 09 Jan 2018 10:33:07
I don't but it shouldn't take nearly 3 or 4 months surely. The manager will have players in mind the black box would have identified targets, all we have to do is get the agreement with the club and player and get them in the door. We seem to be so slow out the block every transfer window unless it's selling of course then it's all wrapped up like vvd announced before the window even opened! But getting players in even when we were in better league positions we seem to always be last out the trap.

3.) 09 Jan 2018 15:41:23
Knowing how we operate it wouldn’t surprise me if they sign nobody with the excuse that business best be kept until the summer when the new manager starts!

I respect arsene wenger and arsenal too your taking it the wrong way its just very very rare that many clubs will keep managers or players long now they always think the grass is greener and we as a club with the players we've sold lately have proved it is not but money turns heads.

I'd like to see us on the front foot with
GK McCarthy

CB vestergard
cb hoedt

Rb jwp
Lb Bertrand

CDM hojberg
Cm lemina
Cm Armstrong

Am el yanoussi
Am redderz

At Austin

Bench
Gunn
Bednarek
Target
Reed
Romeu
Sims
Gabbiadini

I think we are an attacking midfield player light even if Sims can have a breakthrough season we are still 1 attacking player light as well as a striker I'd love Rondon and sisto.

I think we need 2 wingers if/ when tadic goes, I would love to see sisto in a SFC shirt and Sims get more chances but I don't rate shaqiri at all I think Davis needs replacing and a CB to lead the back line like fonte used to as we've never replaced his leadership qualities as for RB I personally would cover with the academy.
