I thought that Chambers moved to arsenal because Clyne was the number one choice, aware of this Clyne should work out his contract.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Clyne and chambers were very much rotated in the last season. I don't think there was much between them in my personal opinion. You can't blame clyne for wanting to move to a bigger club, let's just hope he has the foresight to see that he is already at one, more importantly, actually getting regular games at one too!

Agree0 Disagree0

Nah chambers left because he's the same as Lallana, Lovren, Shaw - found out about the arsenal interest, didn't want to stay the club, kicked up a fuss and got sold onto 'better' things

Saying that I don't think there's any real truth in the Clyne rumours just yet. Club won't sell anyone in Jan and can't see anyone wanting to leave *if* we get top 4

when are saints going to get a new striker in then?
wouldn't mind any one of these
danny ings
john guidetti
jordnan Rhodes
would love to see danny welbeck in a saints shirt but never going to happen

I'd like to see a striker and defender signed in this window.
I think we still need cover at CD and someone more clinical up front to put away a higher percentage of the chances we do create.

Does anyone else now think we have to buy or loan more players in this window, just to cover our injuries? Or would you take a punt on the youngsters to get up through?

We need another forward to take the pressure off our defence.

Injuries are piling up, but actually have come at the right time, with a transfer window still open, so as long as we can stay in top 4 until end of Jan. we will see players returning and maybe one or two added. Those players returning in Feb. will come back fresh after a hectic/tiring period. Newcastle away and Swansea at home could be a lot worse for us to negotiate. I suspect we will add more points than Arsenal by the end of the month.
The simple truth is that there are
not 4 teams better than Saints in the league this season and we will add to our squad in January (already have), will have a number of players returning to fitness by February, and still have Jay Rod to return (February?).

Arsenal can't take points off us, Utd. can't and we have Spuds at St.Marys to come.

My glass is still half full (but, yes, I will be happier when we reach Feb.!)

My prediction for points tally up to the end of feb.

arsenal will take 10 points

southampton 5 points.

whats your prediction saint and we can evaluate end of feb

I would not predict points yet derbygooner, simply because it is uncertain how many of our injuries will be fit to play in Feb., and if so, when.
With a full squad (or not too far away) I suspect we would be wanting 12 points in February alone. We have obviously played all 4 so far, and would expect that Feb. is a month where all games are very winnable. And, of course, there are reasonable gaps between each game so our small squad (getting bigger by then) will not hinder us.

March as well doesn't look too hard-apart from Chelsea away-so we could be a very confident squad tackling the run in.

And forestsaint is correct about the youth players. They are all coached to be able to come in and do a good job immediately, and have shown they can do so.
We have got through the tough part of the fixture list well and built confidence from this. Injuries apart, you may find that Arsenal/Utd/Liverpool/Spuds will be scrapping over the remaining place in the top 4! If Sanchez stays fit, my money would be on Arsenal, if not your defence will cost you too many points.

Tadic aggravated a back injury tonight (probably out for the newky match at least). Bertrand picked up a slight knock. Those and Wanyama's hammy (out for 6 weeks) is why when you have a squad as small as ours you shouldn't play your whole first team in cup matches.

We're never going to win the fa cup this season, teams like arsenal, man u, liverpool, spurs will be going full out for it since they're doing badly in the league - were not going to get past them all.

Play the youth team with a bit of experience from players who usually sit on the bench, give them a test and let them impress enough to challenge for a regular first team place. Don't play the first team and pick up a load of injuries that could cost us a top 4 place in the league, especially when you've already got two of your best out and especially since the teams below us are all starting to find some form and we can't afford another 5 match losing run

Poch got slated for not taking the cups seriously but I'd take that over having at least 5 of our best players out with injuries - 3 of which were needless

top 4 place, champions league, making a bit of history < a very unlikely FA cup and Europa league < what is probably a short cup run

To be honest I don't think we will miss Tadic much he can be a bit of a liability, he always tries to do too much and then loses the ball and then sulks and doesn't get back to challenge. I am not sure that playing a second rate side in the cup competitions sends the right messages about the club's ambition and will never agree with Pochettino's lack of interest last season. He wouldn't even give pre or post match interviews because he couldn't be interested. I still think a successful run in the FA Cup instills great passion and interest from the supporters and can also be very lucrative financially and in many ways keeps the season going for some teams that have no fear of relegation and no real chance of qualifying for Europe. If Saints were to win their next 4 games in the FA Cup they would qualify for Europe almost certainly, so in some ways that would be easier than getting the points on the board but why can't we do both. I just don't understand why certain of our players get injured on a regular basis like Morgan, Victor, Toby, Clyne etc. yet Jose is the oldest and stays by far the fittest, weird. Our midfield at Newcastle will be fine with JWP, HR and SD with Jack waiting in the wings, my concern is how we are going to score the goals, we just can't seem to transfer our midfield dominance to our forward play and let's face it our shots on goal tally has been almost non-existent in the last few games. Keep battling Saints and get in that transfer market Ronald for a goal scoring forward.

Two replies.

1. Midfield players cover much more ground than defenders - that is why they get hamstring injuries.
2. I agree with you cup strategy - we should not try and win 2 battles on 2 fronts this campaign (consortium11??) we should win what is in front of us and that is positions 3 or 4 - i would have tested 2 new Under 21s central defenders to get them ready for some Prem matches over the next few weeks at Ipswich. We already have reed coming through in central mid - who is the defensive Reed?

I sort of agree on a couple of your points but disagree about bringing the two young centre halves in. If they were to play and have a nightmare that would blow their confidence big time. Jose covers as much ground as the midfield and Toby is a defender not a midfielder, I understand what you're saying though. It is difficult to know what is best so I think we ought to leave it to Ronald.
