Whats evryones bets on today?
I think it will be fairly close with probably a draw. I think that if saints can stop the threat of the wing play of richarlison, Walcott and potentially Bernard we should be OK. Also keep an eye on Siggurdsson and Tosun. Ings needs to start alongside either Gabbs or Austin, and would like to see Lemina running into the box like last week. not sure what defensive formation we should play though.

{Ed025's Note - 2-0 to everton for me damien..

Sleeping in the first half which was a problem last season too. Also, as I set out in my match preview article, are players don't suit a 4-4-2, Redmond s less effective on the left and with only two central midfielders, Lemina was expected to do the job of two by supporting attacks and getting back to defend while Romeu sat as a screen. Outnumbered all too often and Lemina was often caught up or down field when we needed him elsewhere.

Second half was much better as we played with greater energy and asked some questions. Everton still could have scored another but missed opportunities too. Pickford was lucky to stay on after raking studs down Ings' back. Anywhere else on the pitch by an outfielder and that's going to be a free kick and a card of some description. Intentional or not, you cannot fly through the air with a straight leg at above waist height, studs showing and get away with making contact with an opponent.

But agree with ED. On the balance of play, they deserved it as the better team. Also, they got 7 of their 12 shots on target. Our wild shooting continues to cause issues as we only managed to get 4 of our 17 attempts on target.

We'll be stronger when Vestergaard and Elyounoussi return. I hope MH also sticks with a back 4 but goes to three midfielders and three attackers as that gives our team the best balance.

{Ed025's Note - there were a lot of positives for the saints figo and the side worked very hard, gave away too many free kicks in dangerous areas for me but the energy and endeavor bodes well for the future mate..

Defensive mistakes again we just don’t seem to be on the pulse straight away
It’s like they’re still sat on the bus other teams come flying out the traps and we don’t
What I’ve kept on about for ages Is when we do break we
Get our selves up the other end then slow up why give the other team chance to get back
This isn’t something that’s been a over night problem it’s been with us for a few seasons now
If Redmond or who ever ran full pace no defender would be happy with that and either foul then or we’d score
Early days I know but we all don’t want a repeat of last year do we.

4.) 20 Aug 2018 11:59:49
One big difference to last year is that if we went 2-0 down we would never have got a goal back and instead we would have let another 1 or 2 in or played super defensive and create no chances. We were missing two of out star players and also Armstrong should have started as he creates some really good chances and is strong on the ball. COYR.

I think the back three thing should continue. we have played better in the last two games, and yet we still can't get results. I think we should drop tadic, and play sims. also drop Long, which is quite harsh, but charlie Austin does bring the goals. long works hard and is possibly a better lone striker than austin, but doesn't score as many which is what is needed. either that or play lemina in midfield as well, and play austin and long up front without tadic, or JWP. if we do go down, these players I think will leave:
Lemina
Bertrand
Cedric
Romeu
Gabbi
Poss Austin altho he's quite committed to the club.
maybe PEH
we need to get rid of:
boufal
forster
redmond
carillo (unless he can prove himself in the last few games) .
this is a lot of players, but we have the van dijk money, good youth players who need to play, and I think the right manager.

Tadic played well against Chelsea and as our one creative player, if we drop him when he is starting to play well we lose something. I would have agreed with you 2 games ago but after the Chelsea performance he deserves another go. Sims doesn’t play in the same position and has different attributes so not really a like for like change. I’d like to see Austin up top as well. I’m not sure whether he’s being eased in gradually or simply a victim of MH’s preferred formation. Time will tell, but Shane Long works a little bit harder for a little bit longer than Austin so understand why he’s preferred. The down side is that if he is not getting assists or goals, putting the opposition under pressure is not always better than picking a proven goal scorer. Ideally, there would be a way to play Austin and Long together, perhaps with Long playing off Austin like JWP and Tadic have been.

I’ve lost confidence in Lemina as the season has gone on. He has made some silly mistakes that have cost us goals and games and since his return from injury, has largely been a shadow of his former self. Romeu has the experience and PEH the tenacity that should see them continuing to get picked first.

It would be surprising to see us sell so many players in any event. If we were relegated, the club may be required to for financial reasons but I’d like to think some of those players would be prepared to play a season in the Champ and see where we are. Stay up or go down, I don’t see MH as our manager beyond the summer. Whilst I would be concerned about bringing in a new manager in light of the last two we’ve hired, I would still prefer to hire a manager with ambition to build a squad, a project of development and progression. Someone who could stay in place for a number of years to give us the consistency we so desperately need. That is not MH’s MO in my book so we need to look elsewhere, hire early in the summer to give the new person time to assess the squad and then back him in the transfer market where finances allow.

2.) 17 Apr 2018 10:00:05
I think Shane has made the difference with the work rate in midfield because he makes himself available all the time and by doing that speeds our play up. He is a totally dedicated give it all player which I’m afraid has been a bit lacking over the season. Tadic is frustrating but is technically gifted and if you take him out we have little creation. Lemina was giving us that in his early days but he doesn’t seem that bothered these days so has been rightly left out. The defence? Good players but just not quite good enough for the PL as a group, When VVD left we needed to replace him with a leader at the back regardless of cost. I honestly believe if we had we would escape relegation which now seems increasingly unlikely, Some players need a run in the side to shine through and now I think we are seeing the true potential of Hjojberg just a shame we didn’t play a settled side earlier in the season. Just seemed to me we lost a game and the management thought, oh well we’ll chuck somebody else in to see how they do. A players confidence gets hammered if they know they will be dropped if they don’t have their best game. We still have a chance but it’s looking more and more unlikely we’ll survive.

that was totally bull.

1.) 14 Apr 2018 15:58:32
I disagree. I thought that was a good performance despite the loss. At least we showed a proper fight and scored two goals. That is now 4 goals against 2 of the top 6 in the last 2 games. That to me seems pretty good considering we are 18th in the table and have been struggling to score goals. A month or two ago I would have expected it to be about 4-0 to Chelsea. If we go down, we'll go down fighting.

2.) 14 Apr 2018 17:52:42
Lol we spend all year saying we can forgive bad results but need to see more passion and fight. They show exactly that, and then posts like this instantly pop up.

3.) 14 Apr 2018 18:36:24
Think it just shows our confidence once we conceded. Arsenal and today was the same. total control until we conceded then total panic sets in.

4.) 15 Apr 2018 17:13:50
I fear we are now relegated, let’s see our team next Sunday bully Chelsea and get to the FA cup final. Hughes has also made his mind up on Redmond and Carrillo thank god. Reed and Kruger should have the decency to resign and at the same time accept responsibility for the clubs impending relegation thus giving time for replacements to plan for next season and negotiate the transfers of the players leaving.

as a club the identity of a model team has a been lost. however I don't think anyone cares what sort of football we play as long as we keep clean sheets, score goals, and show some passion. hojbjerg needs to keep starting next to romeu. long and austin up top together. keep the back three. mccarthy in goal. play sims and wardy as well not dushit tadic.

to be fair hughes played quite good football when he had good technical players like arnautovic, bojan, afellay, shaqiri, etc. they were very good in that 2015/ 16 season.

damienisalegend

1.) 13 Mar 2018 22:22:39
I was thinking that too. Saints have got some very good technical players such as manolo, boufal, carrillo, redmond ect. so hughes might not be too bad. However I would prefer someone else instead.

Romeu is perfectly good enough for the prem.
Redmond simply needs more fan support and the right coaching. he's 24 so has time on his side. Long needs to go and probably Davis only really on account of his age. Stephens Bednarek and Hoedt also need the fans behind them more. Yoshi can still do a decent job but wouldn't be problem if he goes. I believe generally that this transfer windows been good, at least better then last one and players in general need more belief and support instead of crap aimed at them. like to see youth used more this year.

Yeah I would like to see the same thing sham. however I do also think it would be nice to see Gabbi have a good season as well. Between those three we could see a few goals. Still hoping for Long to go though. Just hope Gabbi gets decent service and that Austin stays fit. Have to admit I don't really know much a bout Gallagher though apart from the fact that he's big and can finish quite well. Be glad as for more enlightenment as to the man.

totally agree with the phil neville thing. complete twerp. what he said about granit xhaka also is a load of rubbish. xhakas a good player but is played in the wrong position (defensive midfield) by arsenal. he should be used as more box-to-box as is creative and has a great shot on him (re: game vs serbia)

Urm he's only on loan.
not all is lost.
Redmond is a good player but needs a decent manager to guide him. Hughes has reignited him clearly but he needs a tactician (pep😀) to point up where and how he needs to play.

To be fair when he has played he's had a decent goalscoring return for Arsenal. Probelm for him is his constant injuries and the fact that Arsenal already have Aubameyang, Lacazette and previously Alexis Sanchez ahead of him in the pecking order.
