Perfect January window:

Samuel Umtiti (CB ~ Lyon) - 8 million
Viktor Fischer (LF ~ Ajax) - 10 million

Both work really hard and have really bright futures. I'm sure Lovren would be able to persuade Umtiti and Cortese could attract Fischer with first team (probably) football and a chance in the Premier League.

Don't need a LF imo. Would happily recruit cover at CB though, an an upgrade to Fonte in the long run would be no bad thing.

Possibly keeper cover. Don't rate gazzaniga and Davis is a corpse.

I think Fischer would be great for Southampton, he is fast, skillful and can score. Agreed on the defender issue though.

Davis is hardly an antique! He nearly scored a super volley yesterday with his assist.

Our recent dip in form is no bad thing. Hopefully we'll strengthen the squad a tad in January.

Positions that have concerned me during our injury-hit spell are CB and GK.

Think we need a £5m-£10m young CB as a long-term Fonte replacement/backup for injuries.

Julio Cesar on season long loan from QPR would be ideal until we can fully assess the GK situation in summer.

Other than that I'm absolutely confident we have the squad/youth to fill any gaps.

Thoughts?

We have young CB's in Stephens and Turnbull, Yosh and Hooiveld will do until they're fed into the team. Cesar would be on stupid wages compared to his ability and game time, we aren't going to get a 'keeper in before Boruc is back so we may as well stick with Gazza until the summer and go and buy someone to eventually take over from Boruc then

From what I've seen of them Stephens and Trumbull aren't anywhere near ready yet.

Hooiveld not good enough. New CB is essential.

Fonte ahead of Hooiveld any day. Poor mistake today, which he has replicated too many times. Totally agree with other posters, we need another quality CB and another keeper.

We aren't going to get another top quality CB in Jan! Fonte is doing well this season, prices will be inflated in Jan and we aren't going to get someone of equal quality to Lovren in and keep Fonte, one of them will want first team football somewhere else. We'll wait until the summer before we buy a replacement for anyone.

Gazza is a great 'keeper, he just needs experience, had Hooiveld not made a mistake yesterday he may have kept a clean sheet. quit moaning about players and support the team, or, head off down to Fratton Park.

We're not going to replace anyone, we need another class CB, so we have cover and competition for the spot, we do need a keeper too as Davies is close to retirement and Gazza is IMO not yet ready, and Boruc is class on his day but when he's not on it he makes a shocker! and also isn't any younger so someone like Fraser Forster would be good and Micah Richards could be good for CB, also prices may be inflated but we have cash to spend now and it's not like we have to go for absolute bargains or we'll be out of many is it? At the same to we obviously won't waste our money though
