Hi all,

I have been posting discussion topics and they have been receiving fairly good responses by our members here. Thanks for that.

Looking at our next 3 games against Chelsea, liverpool, and Everton, what is the realistic expectation for points gained, especially after our Brighton s*** performance (apologize for hinting at the dirty language but I feel we should have taken all 3 points. )?

I see us losing all 3 games. Liverpool and Chelsea I can see us losing by more than 2 goals and Everton might be a close-ish game but still don't see us winning. I now see us as relegation fighting as early as winter break. If so, we have to seriously think about coaching change right? Also player changes need to happen. I know some players give their all most of the time while others seem to just go out there to get their paycheck. Any thoughts on this by any of you?

Maybe I have been playing too much fifa and football manager but I think I could do a better job and get results with our squad. Our 4-4-2 system doesn't work. Need to focus on our strengths. We have a good midfield who need more guidance, wingers that can attack and support stickers, and good defence who also need guidance. I think a holding 4-3-3 might be best.

We could do something like this:
---McCarthy ---
---Bertie, hoedt, vestergaard, Cedric---
---lemina, Danish (cdm), romeo
---ely, ings, redderz---

We obviously need a better right winger and also another midfielder. Romeu and hoj can fight it out for cdm but we still need another strong attacking midfielder to partner them. Any ideas?

For Monday's match against Brighton I'd probably go with this line up (assuming they aren't injured or suspended)

McCarthy
Vestergaard Hoedt Bertrand
Cedric Romeu Lemina Targett
Redmond Mohammed
Ings
Subs on: Ward Prowse, Armstrong, Austin.

For this one I'd play Bertrand in the back 3, just so Matt Targett can get a start. We've got plenty of room for rotation and utility among our players. Romeu would be playing if this was a more physical game or one against the bigger boys.

Anyone fancy counter arguing the line up?

So now that the transfer window has closed, what is everyone's opinions on our signings? I think we've done brilliant, and bought in some solid players.

What's everyone's thoughts on our starting 11 for Sunday? I'd go with this.

RWB: Cedric
RCB: Stephens
CB: Vestergaard
LCB: Yoshida
LWB: Bertrand
CDM: Romeu
CDM: Lemina
RW: Redmond
ST: Ings
ST: Gabbiadini
LW: Elyounoussi.

Todays Game

Its best not to attempt to read too much into the result. The whole thing raised more questions than gave answers.

So many players looked tired, it was 30 degrees and perhaps after an energy sapping Wednesday and two hot days Thur/ Fri they became sapped?

Bright Spots - Mo Elyounoussi and Maya Yoshida. Mo showed his class and Maya, looked sharp, just as he did in the World Cup.

Jack Stephens was the best of the Central Defenders and therefore, next Sunday, if we are playing 5 across the back, we should have Jack - Jannik - Maya with hopefully Soares, we missed his pace today and Ryan or Matt on the left.

Ryan looked out of position slightly and Matt too as Right Wing Back - Sparky shaped them over mid second half but it still wasn't quite right.

Stuart Armstrong was brilliant on Wednesday, was okay today but looked tired (or maybe got a slight knock)

JWP - too slow in his thinking, great from corners/ set pieces but in open play he gets caught napping.

Lamina looks completely out of sorts, he gave the ball away easily and made bad decisions.

Nathan Redmond added some pace, but we are short of firepower.

Shane and Charlie to me looked short on ideas on how to score, Shane will run forever but how long does he carry on being given field time?

Manola Gabbiadini is looking much more engaged and a threat, but he needs a partner that delivers him chances, I think he and mo might click.?

Goalkeepers - well Mr McCarthy didn't have the best of days, but let's hope he gets back in the grove once we start for real. Gunn didn't make the pitch today, but he is in the wings. thankfully!

This Week

Lets get a few out of the mix and clear the fog. Steven Davis - Shane Long and dare I say it, if West Ham want to pay £30 million for Lamina. toodles!

Lets keep Sam Gallagher and Josh Simms, especially if we don't bring in a striker.

Few youngsters need to go out on loan;
Harris Reed (Sell or Loan)
Alfie Jones
Jake Hesketh
Yan Valery
and a certain Fraser Forster

Work in Progress - Looking forward to next Sunday with my best mate Rob (and the obligatory wine gums)

Pete Wesley.

If rumours of confirmed signings prove to be true, I guess this is what our *current* squad looks like.

McCarthy (Gunn? / Forster)

Hoedt (Stephens)
Vestergaard (Bednarek)
Yoshida (Santos? )

Cedric (Stephens / Valery / Flannigan)
Bertrand (Targett / McQueen)

Romeu (Hodjberg / Reed / Classie)
Lemina (Ward-Prowse / Davis / Armstrong)

Redmond (Sims / Hesketh / Shaqiri? / Promes? )
Elyounoussi (Gabbiadini / Long / Boufal)

Austin (Gallagher / Ings? / Alacer? / Petagna? )

Obviously a few going out either on-loan or permanently but its still shaping up to be a good squad.

What are peoples actual thoughts on what players we need to bring in this window?

Obviously 2 wingers, a striker, a centre half, an attacking midfielder and a right back for cover would be nice. But realistically for us, what's most important?

A first team quality winger is a must surely? Promes, Sisto, Elyounoussi are names that we've been somewhat linked to.

As we've lost Pied, a right back to cover Cedric is needed unless we plan to play Reed there.

And maybe if we're lucky a Centre half as well? I'd love us to try and go in for Zouma. Think he's had a really tough time with Chelsea and I think they could sell him as they're constantly linked with other defenders. Doubt he'd come to us but you never know, he is still young and could develop well with us. Would give us more presence at the back which I think is what we lack most. Mawson would be a good shout also but a lot of clubs in for him at the moment. Any other potential candidates?

Current squad available, this is my Southampton side for this weekend’s FA Cup 3rd Round tie with Fulham. We need to win this, blow the cobwebs away, dust off the doom and find faith and resurgence and who knows maybe even end up having a wonderful Cup run

Anyway, without further Freddy Adu.

McCarthy
Stephens Hoedt Yoshida
Romeu Lemina
Ward Prowse Davis Bertrand
Long Boufal.

Based on the recent posts on this page I'd like to get your opinion on what you think the best starting 11 would be to play against Burnley. Do we look at changing the formation? Which players will deliver best at producing attacking free flowing football that is good to watch on the eye?
Here's my starting 11:
GK: FF
RWB: Cedric
CB: VVD
CB: Yoshi
CB: Hoedt
LWB: Bertand
CDM: Romeu
CM: JWP
CM: Davis
ST: Austin
ST: Gabbiadini

Here's how I imagine and would want it playing. 3 solid CB's against a team that are good at attacking in the air. This would give the wing backs the opportunity to attack using the width of the pitch. I would want JWP and Davis supporting them also, but the triangle in midfield would allow us to keep possession in the midfield with one of the strikers dropping deep to help. It's not a very fast team, so I wouldn't expect it to be much use on the counter, but I think this would be the best line-up for what MP is trying to achieve.

I think the best thing about our midfield especially is that there is a lot of depth. Which does offer us a lot of flexibility, for example if the above wasn't working and we weren't creating chances you could look at swapping off one of the CM's and one of the ST for Boufal and Redmond and play a 5-2-3. One thing that we didn't like Puel doing last season when we were in Europe was rotating the squad. However, this season I don't think we've done it enough. It took MP long enough to start playing 2 up top.
