I understand that Southampton want two CBs (although it is unclear to me where that would leave Yoshida), a CM, an AM player, a RW, a LW and a striker. Southampton are overrun with strikers but it just hasn't worked out well - it looks like three will bbe available to leave and they will try to bring one in.
Interest:
Marlon Santos (CB) - an offer has been made
Jannik Vestergaard (CB) - Spurs, Arsenal and Inter Milan have all shown interest in JV in the past but Southampton have spoken with Vestergaard's agent and Borussia Mönchengladbach
Mouctar Diakhaby (CB) - Southampton approached Lyon but it was clear the player was going to move to Valencia
Ben Gibson (CB) - surprising that Southampton did not push for Gibson, and that might open the door for Everton
Stuart Armstrong (CM) - done
Xherdan Shaqiri (AM/ RW) - is well known to Hughes and is versatile
Mohamed Elyounoussi (LW) - done
Ademola Lookman (LW) - looked at but won't happen
Adama Traore (LW) - looked at but opted for ME
Danny Ings (S) - wants a move and could be a very good signing
Paco Alcacer (F) - interest remains from January but there is also interest from elsewhere

Available:
Guido Carrillo (S)
Manolo Gabbiadini (S)
Sam Gallagher (S)
Maya Yoshida (CB) - possibly
Sofiane Boufal (AM/ W)
Jordy Clasie (DM)
Florin Gardos (CB) - gone
Ducsan Tadic (AM) - gone.

Thanks very much for the comprehensive breakdown ed002.

I think Vestergaard could be a great signing. I'm also surprised that interest in Gibson has curtailed but put that down to fee if there's a lot of competition for his signature. Santos looks a bit dodgy from the stats but I've not seen him play so am happy to trust the scouts know far more than me.

Some don't rate Shaquiri but I'm not one of them. I think he has shown time and again he has the capacity to unlock teams on his own. He is criticised for being selfish at times but when you look at the low quality around him for Switzerland and Stoke, its not surprising. He scored 8 and had 7 assists last season, having a hand in 15 of Stoke's season total of 36 goals last term. One player helping an ineffective team score 42% of their goals. Phil Neville said his performances and attitude for Stoke last season were a disgrace ahead of Switzerland's game v Sweden on Monday. Phil Neville is an idiot.

It would be great if we could bring in Ings and he could stay fit and find some form. He was so good before his injuries. Would be a gamble though.

Good work!

Ed. as always your information is greatly appreciated. thanks to you and all eds that put huge amounts of time and effort into the site.

{Ed002's Note - Thanks.}

Thank you ed002, fantastic information update.

Can I ask you your opinion on Southampton as a club, it has been a difficult time for the club managing expectation after such a great rise back to the PL and then Two rather underwhelming seasons and then doubts over the new owners. Do you agree it looks like we are trying to get back on track as a top 10 club? As if I asked a few months ago many fans felt like the wheels had fallen off the bus and looked doomed for relegation (reference to Nigel Adkins the legend he is) .

{Ed002's Note - I have no doubt that the owners want the club back on track and are looking to do the right thing. Personally I would have given Puel longer. Mark Hughes will of course also look to improve the squad and bring the club on - but no one else is treading water and the likes of Huddersfield, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth etc. will all be making similar attempts at scrambling away from the relegation positions. It is likely to be another tough season in my view.}

totally agree with the phil neville thing. complete twerp. what he said about granit xhaka also is a load of rubbish. xhakas a good player but is played in the wrong position (defensive midfield) by arsenal. he should be used as more box-to-box as is creative and has a great shot on him (re: game vs serbia)

Thanks Ed, the information you provide is amazing, anything in the Angus Gunn and Joao MARIO links? As I didn’t see them mentioned.

Mario seems unrealistic unless someone left maybe Lemina but I still see his transfer fee being more than Southampton would ever spend. Would be happy with Gunn if true at the expense of Forster.

{Ed002's Note - Joao Mario is being offered around for sale or as part of an exchange deal in order for Inter to raise some cash or complete a deal or two. I am not aware of interest from Southampton.}

Great info ed. Surprised that we'd be willing to let gabbi go. I know he didn't set the world alight last year but I really rate him. He just needs the right service and support.
I'd be happy with Santos and vestergaard. I'm not shaquiris biggest fan but his goals and assist ratio is impressive and that's what we have lacked. Sometimes you have to make do with a little less effort in terms of tracking back as long as they produce the things that count ie. Goals and assists! We let le tiss get away with it after all! Lol
I would take ings but only on loan or for a very small fee. Too high risk to spend big in him. He's like Austin Mark II.

{Ed002's Note - The issue with the strikers is Southampton has too many and none of them are setting the world alight. They need to bring someone in who can perform consistently.}

8.) 04 Jul 2018 18:34:41
Seeing a lot of reports today making us favourites for joao mario. Strange as would be a huge tranfer fee which is unlike saints. Anything in this ED?

{Ed002's Note - RTP.}

9.) 05 Jul 2018 00:52:07
Heard that Manchester United are interested in Shaqiri so that probably rules us out of getting him.

10.) 05 Jul 2018 10:54:20
Thank you for this Eds.
I am sorry to ask but there are two players i've wondered about but you haven't mentioned. Dendonker (spelt wrong I think), Man City player and Petagna. Could you work your magic and confirm if there is any real interest in either of these players please?

{Ed002's Note - (a) Leander Dendoncker - well the player is concerned about playing time which has made him nervous about a move to Atletico Madrid or Manchester United if Mourinho continues his interest from his days at Chelsea. Hodgson was keen to have him work with Luka Milivojevic but that has waned. Allardyce had him watched and discussions were held with Anderlecht when meeting over Henry Onyekuru's loan last season – but I expect those ideas left with Allardyce. Valencia interest went when they signed Uros Racic, and Wolfsburg were interested when they were worried Riechedly Bazoer may go, but that interest has gone. Lyon, Real Betis and Sevilla have an interest still. I am not aware of Southampton interest. (b) I can't think of anyone you might be referring to except Jason Denayer. I agree he would be a good option but he is not a target at this time - although Claude Puel was very keen when he was manager in 2016. (c) Assuming you mean Andrea Petagna of Atalanta, it would be a strange choice. Petagna has the same trait as many of the strikers Southampton already have on the books - he can't score goals. It would be an astonishing choice and I don't know of any Southampton interest - although I will say that representatives of Atalanta is in England this week and met with Chelsea yesterday (Wednesday). They have already signed 8 players and have a further 57 return from loan. As of yesterday they had sold three and loaned or released six or seven others. They would be more than happy to offload Andrea Petagna to Southampton.}

11.) 05 Jul 2018 20:05:28
I think the City player he’s referring to was Gunn.

12.) 05 Jul 2018 17:23:18
Ed do you know who might be replacing pied at right back now he’s been released? Reed, Valery or new?

{Ed002's Note - I don't, but I could ask.}

13.) 05 Jul 2018 23:03:54
I think reed and valery will be tasked with that. Reed played there for Norwich last season and in our friendly against shalke preseason (where he scored) I really hope we keep him. and give him some game time.

14.) 06 Jul 2018 00:58:40
Looks as if Hughes is going to stick with the 5 at the back formation based on yesterday's game. Don't suppose you've got the latest on Vestergaard and/ or any potential attacking mids/ wingers Ed? This would be my lineup for the first game of the season if we get certain players and barring any injuries. Feel like RCB is the most contested position atm between Yoshida, Bednarek, Stephens and this Marlon guy if we get him. Be interested to hear people's thoughts.

Mccarthy
Yoshida (Vestergaard) Hoedt
Cedric Lemina Romeu Bertrand
Elyounoussi (New AM)
Gabbiadini.

15.) 06 Jul 2018 07:42:49
Dendoncker would be a great buy.

16.) 06 Jul 2018 08:45:39
We're not linked with dendoncker. We're linked with Jason denayer.

{Ed002's Note - Jason Denayer is available and after an offer grom Galatasaray was rejected there is a discussion with another side about him in the early part of next week.}

17.) 09 Jul 2018 13:37:06
Cheers Ed, amazing info and appreciated.

Juventus, Southampton, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona have had scouts watching Valencia's Shkodran Mustafi (who was at one time on Everton's books) in recent weeks - this is in addition to with Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Juventus declaring an interest with his club.

Goretzka has been of interest to Southampton but Schelke has no intention of selling in the short-term. }.

Southampton and Roma have watched Galatasaray's Jason Denayer who is on loan from Manchester City. Gala want to turn the loan in to a permanent deal. The price put on the player by Manchester City will likely put off all three clubs.

The Southampton fans don't harp on about this matter anything like as much as the Liverpool fans do. "On file" means it remains with the Premier League who have thus far done nothing about it at all.}

Chris - I hit send too early and will reply to your post once I am through this train journey to the desolate wastelands of Northern England. No trains between Didcot and Oxford fouled up m day and Virgin Trains not carrying ice for my gin made it worse. I will get to the safety of a Hilton and reply later - it is a point well worthy of a good and thorough answer. And a break for me from the moaning Liverpool fans and the Arsenal fans who will still bleat once they have Brahimi, Draxler, Mustavi etc next week. }.
