Gaston Ramirez has gone to Hull on season long loan.

It is wild that we've let him go.

No depth in those positions at all.

Surely we must be signing Saido Mane AND Nathan Redmond to justify this.

Greenwich Saint

1.) Gaston has never done the business! If struggling he can always be recalled

2.) 01 Sep 2014 22:05:18
Exactly what has Gaston contributed to Saints progress over the last two seasons?

A few flashes of talent, lots of injuries, missing in 1st game of season, and lots of money.

Too much of a luxury for a grinding unforgiving league. Shame he's gone in a way, but prefer the new boys.

PS Commiserations to anyone who put Taider on their replica kit (or Vorren for that matter)

3.) Lets be honest now. He has never really had a good game for us and when he came on vs west ham he did like 3 good passes that is it! He is the player that never did and we are still giving him a chance by loaning him out.

4.) It's a shame he's gone just a few days after one of his most promising outings in a long while at West Ham, but he's brought little to the first XI for a year or so now. Injury prone, generally unfit and lethargic, he hasn't done his talent justice.

Weird that Saints didn't offload him to Sevilla when they had the chance - loaning him to a PL rival could bite them in the backside. But, ultimately, he's one of the squad's highest earners yet he never plays. Averages something silly like 30 minutes per game over the course of his Saints career.

5.) Gaston's got the potential to be great but for every good game he's had for us he's had a few mares. A season playing first team football for hull will be better than him sitting on our bench, hopefully he'll come back less injury prone and more of a consistent player

6.) Don't forget who told you this first.

Maybe some of you will now take off your rose tinted glasses.

We are an absolute disgrace, we look like a league 1 team.

We do not have the squad to compete in any competition.

Koeman doesn't have a clue.

Livid is an understatement. Our odds on being relegated have dropped from 40-1 to 19-1 and rightly so.

We will be relegated

Looks like Spider sand Clyne are off.

I have no issues with Morgan going to a CL club. He is good enough and should start at Arsenal (over Coquelin) and ought to share playing time with, and eventually replace Carrick at UTD. If I were in his position i'd go.

If were in Clyne's position i'd be off to liverhampton in a heartbeat. He will earn significantly more there than we can pay him and, although he will face competition from Flanagan once fit, he should start.

Who wouldn't take a massive pay rise if offered! Let's be realistic.

Replacements

The first thing to say is that their replacements should be in place before they leave. Otherwise the value of anyone we try to sign will be inflated. So let's hope Morgan stays long enough for us to get someone in.

I'd take Imbula, Idrissa Gueye or Clasie.

Soares is already done, with mixed reviews with a 50+ game season on the cards we need two players in every position. Thus we need another RB. Please, Les, give me Sam Byram.
Alternatively get Toby tack who is more than adept at covering there.

At CB, now this won't be popular.

Fonte is good enough for another couple of seasons before his legs go. We need two quality CBs (hopefully Toby is one). Gardos and Yoshida are not good enough. Their signings are some of the most frustrating business we have done, add Forren to the mix and we could have had an awesome CB for the money.

None of the lads coming through at CB inspire any confidence, I watched Jordan and Jack at Swindon twice last year. Jordan with development might make a good RB, but imo he will be championship at best. and Jack Stephens looks like a CM played out of positiion. Jason McCarthy will be a big player for us but he is 345 years off.

So Toby and and another please Les.

I still also feel the squad needs another AM, Lallana wasn't replaced. I love Davis, his work rate, attitude, passing, touch; all great, but he is too weak in the tackle to play a holding role and isn't creative enough or good enough at shooting to playing a AM role. Unfortunately he needs replacing. JWP is far from the finished article but provides good cover and will hopefully develop.
I'd love a cheeky big money offer for Swansea's Sigurdsson, he is just what we need. But I suspect Juanmi or Long will play this role.

If we are going to play the way we did last season we need someone to compete with Pelle, He looked shattered so many times last year. Juanmi, Jay Rod, Mane and Long will all play off him and won't win much in the air. I'd like Austin or Mitrovic please, Les. I'd even have Vardy for the right price wins everything in the air and work so much work.

Work to be done, season is 5 weeks away!

Spot on Greenwich Saint, although I think Yoshida is good enough for 4th choice CB, so I would only get rid of Gardos, assuming we got 2 new CB's

Absolutely disgusted with the 2nd half of our Season. When we do play well we don't put our chances away and far too often we have benn far too easy to play against. Koeman is the right man but he does not have the right players. Swansea will overtake us and get Europe.

Greenwich Saint

1.) 02 May 2015 19:45:16
this obviously won't happen, I agree about the right players though, we have very little depth, shouldn't have got rid of Cork, it was a huge mistake, we shouldn't have to play a CB in CM, I think both Djuricic and Elia aren't permanant solutions which is why we only got them on loan, Koeman has done amazingly to put togther a squad doing this well after the summer we had, now this summer he can really build his team

2.) 02 May 2015 21:18:31
Has Koeman done "amazingly" putting together this team? Of the four players he had to replace - and had a huge budget to do so - only Bertrand has been a real success. Alderweireld has done well, of course, but he's just a loan and won't be around next season. Tadic and Pelle (for around £20million combined) have been pretty poor replacements for Lallana and Lambert. I can't even begin to wrap my head around £12million for Shane Long, an all-round terrible footballer.

Throw in Gardos, who has hardly played, and I'd say the best part of £40million has been frittered away on some very average players. And that's without taking into account the underwhelming loan duo of Elia and Djuricic (Anyone remember the loan of Taider, which lasted all of one pre-season game? How amateurish was that?)

The reality is, Saints' best performers this season were inherited by the manager: Fonte, Schneiderlin, Wanyama, Clyne. And at least two of them won't be here after the summer.

As for building in the summer, Les Reed said this week that they won't be spending much to improve the squad depth in the off-season. He thinks the u21s can make up the numbers. I think they're kidding themselves.

The honeymoon period is well and truly over. Koeman's tactics have been predictable and one-dismensional over the second half of the season, and the squad has performed no better than a side around 12-14th. I've seen little since Christmas to suggest this is just a temporary blip. They peaked in November and have been declining ever since.

The big worry is that no-one seems to have been able to do anything to arrest this long drop off in form.

3.) 02 May 2015 22:37:16
Have to agree with all of above, why why why was no striker loaned in in january, the signings have been poor pele had a good 6wks, tadic in my opinion is totally overated, elia and dju'who' awful, mane has showed glimpses and gives me some hope, long was bought as a panic as fans were getting restless and every man and his dog know he's not worth half that even steve bruce had a chuckle, look at swansea they lost there players who were more important to them than lovren/shaw/lallana were to us yet they still move on without spending what we have, the talk of u21s coming through, I don't think so, Reed is good enough but roko doesn't seem to fancy him apart from him I can't see any of them becoming a regular, i'd like to hope targets have been identified but i'd like, siggurdsson, benteke, richards, schmeical and austin for starters

4.) 02 May 2015 23:07:58
Of the u21s, I think Reed can make the grade. He's never let the first team down. Ward-Prowse has gone nowhere this season and doesn't appear to be developing at all, which is a serious concern. Targett looks okay as back up left back.

Gallagher's been unlucky with injuries and I'd hope he and Seager can push on next season and become viable striking options, but I wouldn't be surprised if neither does.

I don't see many or any of the rest being good enough. Isgrove has had loans to League One and Championship sides now and made no impression at that level. Sinclair will probably be released. McQueen is too slow to be a winger.

Hesketh has good quality, but he's a long way behind, physically. One or two of the defenders - McCarthy, Wood - could come through, but it's a very difficult position to give kids top-level experience in.

But there's no Walcotts, Bales or Oxlade-Chamberlains on the horizon, I'm afraid. The next generation of Saints are going to be, at best, unspectacular squad players. There's nothing of note in the u18s either.

5.) 03 May 2015 00:11:04
I agree with all of the above. Up till now our academy has been turning out good footballers year in year out and there's usually 3 or 4 that can slot in to the first team each year but I don't think that any of the present U21 squad will make the grade. The problem now is if Roko is being restricted on the amount of money he can spend in the summer and with possibly 3 of our best players leaving who does he bring in? I fear that we will end up with more over rated players who look good on paper but when it comes to a long hard EPL season they go missing. Re. Pelle, Tadic, Gardos, Long, Elia and Djuricic. None of them lived up to their hype and I fear that we will only get more of the same for next season. Of the players that left last year only one has been successfully replaced and that is Bertrand in for Shaw. If we qualify for European football it just makes the season longer and harder so we really need a bigger and better squad than we have at present or a lot of players will be falling by the wayside come October/November meaning that we will have no adequate cover in many positions.

6.) 03 May 2015 01:41:05
We loose 5 starting players who were key to us last year, make that 6 with J Rod being out all season and to think you can even suggest that Koeman hasn't done a great job of rebuilding our team? Our season has fizzled out due to a lack of goals and I agree our front line really needs to be looked at for next season, at the half way point in the season we were 4th, which shows we have the ability to be up there, we made a mistake in January in not signing a striker, which we have paid for a bit now as our over reliance on Pelle scoring has started to show. We made another mistake in allowing Cork to leave, as he's been fantastic at Swansea and was great for us whenever he played this season. I disagree with comments about the under 21's, I think there's a fair few that have the potential to make it into our first team; Reed, Gallagher, Targett, Gape, Isgrove, Hesketh. list goes on, we had a poor game today but we've still had a fantastic season. It just feels disappointing because of the amazing start we had

7.) 03 May 2015 20:10:46
I think it's a bit of a stretch to consider Callum Chambers either a starter or a key player. He was back up right back and has neither been replaced nor missed.

I agree, it was a strange decision to let Cork leave, considering how little money they got for him - he might as well have been kept on until the summer before leaving on a free. The prize money difference between a couple of places in the league probably covers what Swansea paid for him. Given that, at the start of the season, the club thought they needed Cork and Taider as part of their midfield pool, it was foolish to ship out both of them without a single replacement lined up.

They supposedly tried to sign Tonny Vilhena in the winter but didn't have any money left over from their summer trading to pay the fee - which is a pretty damning indictment of how they've peed away much of their money on an ill-equipped squad.

It has certainly been a good season, but the signs of the last four or five months are of a team going backwards, which doesn't auger well for another difficult off-season of player departures - especially after Les Reed spoke of filling the already thin squad with u21 players rather than going out and buying quality.

People are dreaming if they think the club can possibly progress with this approach.

Awful performance today, the squad really got found out. Pelle was terrible didn't work hard at all, didn't hold the ball up, didn't win a header and was static in the box. Gomis looked twice as good. Nobody to bring on for him. Bertrand now suspended for 3 games and lightweight Targett in his place. Kiss goodbye to euro hopes. Never had a chance with such a small squad. Only 6 on the bench today, what an absolute joke.

Greenwich Saint

1.) 01 Feb 2015 21:49:00
I'll agree to a point.
I don't get why we only had 6 on the bench, could've used an Isgrove/Sims/McQueen on there today.

Though I thought we were by far the better team until Reed went off, when he went it left a massive hole through the middle that Shelby eventually found. Unless Reed's picked up injury it was a silly move and it should have been Tadic going off.

Someone needs to tell them to just have a shot though, we're looking like arsenal of 6/7 years ago just trying to walk the ball into the net

I don't think it's a lack of effort from Pelle he just looks absolutely knackered at the moment, need to bring in another striker and give him a break for a couple of games 'cause he's been off it more often than not since that bad run before xmas

Silly tackle from Bertrand, mistimes that and it's a potential broken leg. Don't think Targett's all that bad of a replacement though, done alright against Chelski, playing time is only going to be a good thing for him

as i've said before, it's not the size of the playing squad that'll cost us, it's the fact we tried to compete in everything.
Poch played a weak team in the cups 'cause he realised we didn't have the squad to compete in both league and cup and got absolutely slated for it.
Koeman's wanted to go as far in everything as possible and we've picked up needless injuries, not just little niggles that have kept them out for a game at a time, full blown injuries that have taken them out for 4/6 weeks at a time, in EVERY round, which IS starting to cost us now.
We've got the same chance of winning the league and FA cups in 2/3/4 years as we do now, we don't have the same chance of finishing in the top 4 - concentrate on that

2.) Agree about Reed that he shouldn't have been taken off. He is looking like a great player and prospect.
We needed another strike option yesterday and will definitely need an out an out striker for the rest of the season rather than the attacking midfield/wingers we have to support Pelle.
The first half was great possession and pressure wise but Swansea defended well in numbers.
Teams are now coming to us and playing this way and hoping for a breakaway goal rather than coming to attack us as in previous years. Nice to have the respect but we need to put our chances away or this is likely to happen again.

30 Jan 2015 19:20:30
Southampton now have 13 senior, outfield players on their books plus 3 loans. This is the lowest number in the premier league. I understand that bringing youth through is important and agree that it is a good philosophy, however, this is just ridiculous. Centre midfield was the only place that we had adequate cover. I hope the board make the loans of Bertrand and Alderweireld permanent quickly and recognise that we can't gamble on the fitness of Pelle, we need a like for like striker for competition and in case of injuries.

Greenwich Saint

1.) 30 Jan 2015 20:47:37
still do have more than adequate cover in DM/MF. Reed has outshone Cork lately, JWP plays deep for the england u-21's and does practically the same job Cork does. Only thing we've done really is make a more regular bench spot for Reed (until we get Clasie in the summer)

Alderweireld and Bertrand are pretty much certain to be permanent, everyone itk is expecting them to be. Plus, as they're on non-recall loans we don't need to make the deals permanent during a window, we can submit bids next month and they'd still remain our players until the summer and as we have first option on them and the fees for them guaranteed already, it's not like we're going to miss out on them

Agree about the striker but Koeman confirmed today we've got at least one of Vilhena and Djuricic coming in so that should ease things

2.) 31 Jan 2015 11:18:15
I have said this before there is no such thing as a guaranteed agreed fee with other clubs similar to having a player on contract. In this wonderful game of ours there are no guarantees and clubs can more or less change the rules when they like through finance alone. If Athletico Madrid decide they don't want Toby sold for the agreed amount they will get round it somehow and the way he has been playing I wouldn't put it past them doing just that.

3.) As said theyd just pay the 1.5m recall fee and sell him on to other club for 10m+ instead of 6m we've agreed

4.) 31 Jan 2015 14:13:21
they can't just 'change the rules' though. It's a guaranteed release clause in a binding contract that both clubs agreed to, no way to back out of it if an offer that matches it is submitted.

Not sure I believe the 1.5 recall clause is true, as far as I've seen it was just a rumour doing the rounds on twitter, I'm sure they would have acted on it by now going by his form this season if it were

5.) 31 Jan 2015 15:42:05
Why would they recall him when we are paying his wages and will be until the end of the season that is the deal as you said. It is at the end of the season it may get a bit tricky when we say " right we are signing him now Manuel, here's our agreed transfer fee ! " We'll see what they say especially if we have qualified for Europe.

6.) As has previously been said, I'm sure if they wanted rid there are teams willing to pay more for him now than the fee they'll get from us, if they wanted to keep him I'm sure they could make use of a top defender who's been in great form. As I said I truly believe that 1.5m recall clause was just a twitter rumour, I may be wrong though, maybe one of the eds know?

7.) If Godin goes as expected then i'm sure they would have Toby back

Diego Capel is awful. Think Stuart Downing but worse. 25 games for sporting last season zero assists. One goal. Two games so far this season no positive contribution made.

That's hard to dispute, the only thing I can think is that you'd want get yourself a big contract asap in case of bad injury. also UTD need a RB now so surely if they thought he was good enough they'd have bid.

I'd have preferred Clyne and Chambers :-P Now it looks like it's Soares or Chambers and the jury is out on that.

Mane has been awesome but he doesn't do the same job as AL. We still need an AL.

You're spot on with Bertrand and Toby though.

Pelle needed RL to provide competition and RL will wish he never left.

Let's hope Toby comes back.
