It probably won't happen. but does anyone think it's time to revert to an old school 442 formation? I'm not really a fan of It, but with redominds pace down the left, a solid middle of romeu and lemina, ward-prowse delivering crosses from the right and Austin and gabbiadini up top to put the pressure on the opposing team? .

1.) 25 Aug 2017 10:49:31
I've thought this for a while - it could work quite well for us. We would definitely need to add a striker if we wanted to do that though.

2.) 25 Aug 2017 13:59:44
Think I'd rather have Redmond on the right. He's the type of player, if playing on the RW will try and cut inside every time and try and take it on himself. He's not good enough to do that.

3.) 26 Aug 2017 08:02:03
Anything sounds better that some of the painful stuff we have seen. 442, why not! To add to Milkys team I'd have Bony and Townsend. Both have a bit of pace, Bony can hold up as well, and Townsend can cross and shoot with either foot 😇.

4.) 26 Aug 2017 08:50:55
Didn't Leicester win the league playing 442 most of the time?

5.) 26 Aug 2017 09:55:48
I need a link to Andros Townsend putting in a good cross, otherwise it didn't happen.

23 Jul 2017 19:42:24
Eds if/ when vvd goes, have you any info on who we are interested or have in mind to replace him? . I remember fabien schar was mentioned a couple of windows ago. I don't know what's happened on that front. I guess sakho would be an option but his wages and valuation probably rule him out for us, plus he's injured.

{Ed002's Note - There have been players considered but since CP left I am not sure right.}

19 Jul 2017 09:36:24
Looks like chicharito is going to West ham then. shame as I really rate him, but I guess our current strikeforce is the one we will start the season with. Austin, gabbiadini, long and Gallagher. One centre mid, and a pacy winger in the walcott mould and I'd be happy tbh.

1.) 19 Jul 2017 10:14:19
Ok guys I got completely slated last year at pre-season when I said I couldn't see where the goals would come from last year.
(Was I correct? )
We need a proven goal scorer who is not coming back from an injury!

2.) 19 Jul 2017 12:25:32
Gabbiadini and Austin. We've got 4 strikers and probably back to playing 4-2-3-1.

3.) 19 Jul 2017 16:37:16
In fairness it wasn't the strikers but the style of play which was the problem last season we could have had messi up front but if you don't get the ball you can't score, hopefully les has told the new gaffer to be a bit more expansive and try to win rather than don't loose at any cost and have a plan b if you go behind.

4.) 19 Jul 2017 17:23:34
I hope you guys are right but I think unless Austin stays fit we may
have problems up front still as without him we've not got enough strength in the box.

5.) 20 Jul 2017 09:40:11
Saint Mark, with the upmost respect, having messi up front would have got us many more goals! That said, I do take your point. I remember an England game one year and the pundits watching were slating Owen for having a poor game, but wrighty jumped to his defence and said he had a great game, the 2 times he actually GOT the ball! Just because he didn't score doesn't make it a poor game for him, we have hungry and food strikers, but we need to supply them with opportunities that they aren't snapping at. A creative box to box, ball winning CM who is given a bit more of a free role. Davis would be great at that, but Puel didn't give him the role last year, hopefully the new gaffa has an eye on that.

6.) 20 Jul 2017 17:30:26
Standard issue answer. Sort the defence out. You can't lose if you don't concede. If you don't score with a clean sheet, it's still a point in the bag! If you score you win. Simple!

10 Jul 2017 17:17:38
Eds this isn't exactly saints related but do you know what the situation is with Ross barkley at Everton. whether he will leave and what clubs might be interested? . maybe there are concerns about his attitude or the fact he hasn't quite progressed as they hoped. (poor decision making etc) but his directness and dribbling/ pace with the ball is something I think we are missing in the midfield. isn't he in the last year of his contract too?
Just a random thought.

{Ed002's Note - They would be happy to sell and he would be happy to leave - price is likely to be the issue. Southanpton has shown no interest.}

1.) 11 Jul 2017 06:28:53
Fair enough, cheers.

04 Jun 2017 18:04:40
Heard from a "source" of sorts that there is a gentleman's agreement that van dijk would give us one more year, however if an offer of 70 mill came in the club would probably take it.

Also that they are open to tadic leaving for an acceptable offer and that Shane long will be leaving too.

No news on any incoming.

1.) 05 Jun 2017 17:44:49
So much for van dijk staying on then. why on earth would he want to go to Liverpool though!? I really hope we tell them where to go. I've had well enough of selling players to liverfool.

Ok so it's all gone a bit dead unless you have a look at the arsenal, liverpool, Everton pages for a laugh to see all their fans wetting themselves lol.

So as a bit of fun, anyone up for naming their best/ favourite squad from your lifetime of watching saints?

So that's a starting 11 + 7 subs AND the year you were born. I'll start

Cedric-lundekvam-van dijk-bertrand

Chris Marsden

Luke Shaw.

2.) 21 Sep 2017 18:52:11
Good idea Milky, I think I could probably name about 7 teams that would probably do really well even now. I'll think about it but it will include players like Mike Channon, Steve Williams, Kevin Keegan, Danny and Rodney Wallace etc. etc.

3.) 22 Sep 2017 11:04:38
Mikey I forgot about pahars and bridge!

4.) 22 Sep 2017 13:45:36

5.) 22 Sep 2017 13:59:22
Don't forget the great side of '83
Steve Moran
Mick Mills
Danny Wallace
Frank Worthington to name a few!

Omg, forgot Townsend (swap for Baker) for the homegrown team and Armstrong (swap for Davies) for the other team. too many good players 😇.

01 Sep 2017 07:11:54
As much as we all greatly appreciate your input, knowledge and humour on all matters on this website ed, you've got to admit you got it wrong on van dijk leaving. whether it works out well for saints remains to be seen and if doesn't go in January he will 100% go next summer. anyway thanks for your information this window to all the eds.

{Ed002's Note - Fine I got it wrong. Find someone else to do the transfers news and interest from now on.}

1.) 01 Sep 2017 11:13:14
It may be the club have got it wrong in keeping him 70m may look a fortune in a years time. Be interesting to know if and when an olive branch is held out to get him back with the team and being a World Cup year seems irrelevant now as holland are truely pony. Hopefully he will knuckle down and prove his worth and get the move he so clearly wants at a time and fee that is agreeable to all.
Not sure if he plays how those who are dropped will feel I would be truely pissed off watching someone playing for a move ahead of me but that seems to be football now. Loyalty and hinesty is made to look like a negative.

2.) 01 Sep 2017 11:37:11
I think ed was safe to assume that VVD was leaving as it was the smartest bang to do, his position was untenable and it's almost as stupid as arsenal keeping Sanchez, eds can't account for Southampton foolishness.

3.) 01 Sep 2017 11:57:12
At the same time. Southampton haven't actually had to do any work here. No bids were made during the transfer window. Sure the board said he wasn't for sale but it's not like they actually had to reject a 70m bid for him unlike Liverpool and Countino.
The people that have made themselves look foolish is all the ex Liverpool pundits by saying it was a certainty all summer.
I think VVD sacking his agent could be a statement of intent to our club. He may have sacked him realising he wasn't going to get his transfer and wants to focus on the upcoming season.

4.) 01 Sep 2017 10:34:43
You are allowed Ed! Please confirm that you (individually and collectively) will continue to provide interesting and valuable information, and discussion points, right or wrong, confirmed or speculative, regardless of 10 year old later bating you with "told you so" comments. Cheers.

5.) 01 Sep 2017 10:37:56
Bit of a touchy response ed, I wasnt having a dig. its a banter page don't cry about it.

31 Aug 2017 09:57:07
Matty targett on loan to Newcastle. That'll be a brilliant move. Hopefully he gets plenty of game time and returns an even. better player. Happy with that good luck to him.

Side note. please let us get one more quality attacker in.

16 Aug 2017 18:13:57
Fantastic interview with Ralph Krueger on the beeb.

Answers all the questions from the bed wetters, the panic people. real show of strength and an openness and communication of our plan to the fans who failed to see what we've been doing. This has been a really positive week for us! Takeover announced, saints holding firm with van dijk and being linked with good players.

" our transfer business isn't finished yet" - Ralph Krueger. Let's hope we can bag a couple of goals against a poor west ham side on Saturday and really kick our season off early doors.

Come on saints!

1.) 16 Aug 2017 21:07:53
I expect a new CB, VVD to stay until Jan (min. ) Would cover all bases.

2.) 17 Aug 2017 09:13:54
Think some of the VVD situation may revolve around whether Wesley Hoedt signs. There may then be this crazy money offer for Virgil that may get SFC off the hook due to it being too good to turn down. Keeps us guessing though I suppose, some football clubs have more U turns than the current government so nothing is set in stone until 3rd September. I still think we will sell him but I would be very pleased to be proved wrong.

3.) 17 Aug 2017 10:43:43
Kruger said not this window, hoet do bed in and release virgil if there is still interest in January making a tidy profit. I. e the Southampton way.

4.) 17 Aug 2017 11:19:52
But what's Virgil's next move now he isn't in the Dutch squad? Surely he cannot continue not to play? Time had run out for him.

5.) 17 Aug 2017 12:21:42
I agree with you Saintmark but can't see us letting VVD sit around on full wages for 4 months and do we really want him playing for us for half a season knowing he's off in January. I think we will take the money if it is over the price we expect. Can't see any purpose to it otherwise even though our stance on this is admirable. Just say we were in 4th position when the January window opened and VVD was actually part of the side that got us there, wouldn't we be back to square one by being in a position that it would be damaging to us to let him go then . Tricky one this but I say just let him go, he might find it isn't the wonderful move he thinks he's getting and he may find that out the hard way like Lovren did.

6.) 17 Aug 2017 15:05:25
Lovren isn't as good as vvd I think but I agree that its way easier being a part of our backline instead of liverpool's. I mean moreno or bertrand, no contest.

7.) 17 Aug 2017 17:52:16
Surely if VVD is fit, but refuses to play, he's in breach of his contract. Do we have to pay him? Mmm. Not sure that that would help this situation!

Some sources are saying that we're awaiting Coutinho's departure before offering LFC VVD for £80m. I'd take that for the unprofessional Dutchman - thanks very much!

15 Jul 2017 06:45:49
Let's sign Wesley snjeider on a free!

1.) 15 Jul 2017 09:52:45
Yeah great I think he'll only want 15k a week 🤣🤣🤣.

2.) 15 Jul 2017 19:12:30
Give him 100k a week he won't cost a fee.

3.) 15 Jul 2017 19:34:59
Doesn't matter if they cost money or not, still have a wage budget and still have to comply with FFP rules.

4.) 16 Jul 2017 08:06:14
Sold j-rod, loaned out other players, released a few players. it would work on football manager lol.

5.) 16 Jul 2017 09:56:12
There's no chance of that if saints have any sense. He was a great player, but this league would tear him apart. He'd be injured within the first 2 weeks and cost us 100k per week for months and take up a treatment table. We would have been better off going for John Terry. At least he played in a position we are low on quality.

Saint Chris maybe a punch up in the dressing room would do us good. I want see some heart and passion in the players. This manager is not instilling that. And a manager not taking any rubbish from the board wouldn't be a bad thing either, considering some fans accuse MP of being a yes man to les reed.

Barnes left peg, the feeling around a lot of the fan base here is one of disillusion. even many of the more positive fans and people on this page are struggling to remain that way. The last 2 managers and few transfer windows have been poor for us. This January is absolutely vital. If we don't do good business with th vvd money then we are looking at a relegation battle. Puel I though would have been a success in the long term for us but the end of last season and frustrating displays in Europe lost him his job. This manager is a lot worse, and I think he's the first bad appointment we've made in years.

That's a very human and kind view you've taken with regards to FF 4thelove. if I were to step in FF sizeable boots right now I'd feel embarrassed at being paid £70+k a week, putting in shocking performances, losing my England and saints place. I'd feel like I needed to seriously up my game, train harder, work harder, play much much better and battle to regain the trust of my manager, teammates and fans. He should have been dropped a while ago and they stuck with him. fair enough. But he has been very poor for sometime.

I'm not just talking about age, Chris. Strachan has done nothing of note or achievement since leaving us over a decade ago. He was poor at Middlesbrough, even worse with Scotland. He's dated. Ferguson has retired, remember, Wenger should have retired by now, And if we'd appointed Roy hodgson in the summer there would have been riots lol.

At least someone like Keane is a bit younger, fresher. Still withna point to prove after both success and arguable failure too in previous jobs.

I'm just brainstorming tbh, but we can all see that we need a gaffer actually knows this league, knows how to fire up and motivate the players, has clear ideas on how to play and won't take any shit. Our last 2 managers have come in and spent half a season trying to figure out their best players/ formations etc with varying degrees of success. the difference between puel and Pellegrino is that at least the players appeared to follow puels instructions. Unless Pellegrino has told his players to "walk on the pitch like they don't care amd wander about aimlessly" it looks and feels like the players have downed tools a bit.

I think the last 3 signings are of genuine quality, although boufal is obviously very raw and leminas attitude is questionable. Gabbis confidence must be rock bottom with the way he's been treated and mis-used by this manager.

I would get rid NOW! like, today! And get someone in to try and keep us up. but a good question as to who. My personal choice would be Roy Keane, for reasons I won't go into right now. But would he come to us? I don't know. I just have a feeling he would be a success. but the more time that passes the deeper in the sh*t we are.

The trouble with signing players, who would want to come to us?! We look like we're going down, we've got the worst manager in the league. We don't look like the attractive proposition that we have done over the last few years. So the only players that would consider joint that might have the quality to help are likely to be mercenaries on astronomical wages. which would be a risk because if we do go down what happens to those players? We are in a very, very bad situation.

It feels like a worse situation than when we dropped through the league's. At least there was a reason for that. We had no money and we had to sell all our players, managers could do nothing to stop it. now we have a team full of internationals, youth, experience. Yes we are a little unbalanced but compare our squad to those in the bottom half of the table, it's a good squad. Yet we are in freefall.

1 win in 14, against a terrible Everton side with a caretaker manager. Take that freak result out of the equation, where would we be? MOPE the clown. More out of his depth than Paul sturrock was.

"Growing" concerned, over half way through the season, over half way through the transfer window, already losing some of our easiest and "must win" games.? It's a bit late for growing. I have no idea what is happening at my club. I've tried to remain positive over the last couple of years when others seemed to be losing their heads. I still believe that the squad we have should have been capable to finish at least in the top ten. But this woeful excuse for a manager has failed miserably, and it seems like the board, the black box, whatever, have no answers what to do next. We are in a DESPERATE situation. I think we're one more loss away from protests and banners. If he doesn't go in the next week with a replacement ready to come in I honestly think we will go down and the hard work of almost 10 years will be completely undone and wasted.

{Ed0333's Note - It’s a tough one Milky. Do you give Peligrino money now to spend to get some players in and see how it goes or do you sack him now? It’s an interesting situation for neutrals but I’m sure it’s a desperate one for you Saints fans. I’d be inclined to get rid and give the new man some time to implement a Premiership survival mission. It maybe too late in 6-8 matches time. I’m not too sure who you would go for? Any ideas?
