Pelle on the verge of departing to China, was a brilliant stop gap following the departure of one Rickie Lambert.

Seems the club are happy with Long, Austin and Jay Rod as our striking options for the season, assuming no fitness concerns arise during pre-season.

1.) 08 Jul 2016 20:07:03
Think they will convert j-rod to a no.9. That's if they don't bring in another target man. Shame, I'd have liked to keep him but if true china will probably pay well over market value.

2.) 08 Jul 2016 20:40:32
Nobody can begrudge Pelle for taking this offer if true . We will miss him but it's a no brainier for him to finish his career on better money than he has ever been on . I would, wouldn't you? Good man Graziano you did us proud .

3.) 08 Jul 2016 20:43:27
If it's true that they'll pay £13m it's a no brainer for Saints to sell him.

4.) 09 Jul 2016 06:07:23
See if we can squeeze a mill more or so but
Can't say anything negative about pelle really
If he does go need to replace that target man in our team
The other strikers we have all have there own attributes but none really have his aerial treat and his ability to hold the ball up
In my view top player and a excellent servant for Sfc.

5.) 09 Jul 2016 06:18:01
Anyway
I'd like to see Berahino get tapped up loads of potential
Typical saints buy as in young still a lot to prove in my books and we have some money to spend so let's get on with it
He's already got his england roomy hear in Redmond so why not
If puels got the ability to take younger players and make them into super stars he's a good example of a player with bags of potential who's club can't get it out if him.

6.) 08 Jul 2016 22:51:38
We are looking for a striker. Bas Dost bid rejected. Eds?

{Ed002's Note - Not that I am aware.}

7.) 09 Jul 2016 08:45:18
It's a no brianner for pellets 38 mill for 4 years work?

8.) 09 Jul 2016 09:50:42
Am I the only one glad to see the back of him? He's always believed the name on the back of the shirt was more important than the badge on the front (unless in an Italy shirt) . First touch is abysmal, tries too many little back heel flicks that never work (unless wearing an Italy shirt), goes missing for half a season then people forgive him when he scores a few, personally believe Shane Long should be starting every game and he'll score far more than Pelle.

9.) 09 Jul 2016 10:59:35
Bloody auto correction Pele.

10.) 09 Jul 2016 16:00:42
No, I don't agree with that at all. Koeman dropped him which is why he went missing for so long. He is a good striker who can hold the ball up well, he gives it a go and is worth every penny of what we paid.

11.) 09 Jul 2016 20:30:36
Okay well I have a source within the club who will back me up with my point.

25 Jun 2016 08:40:14
If the interest in Mané is serious from Liverpool, I think we will have to take an offer this window rather than next summer.

Assuming we have already put a contract forward to him, there's no reason he wouldn't have signed it by now just as VVD, Forster and co. have already done.

So if it is the case he sees his future elsewhere we would be right to sell now for a very good sum of money that would help towards replacements for himself and Wanyama.

The most like for like replacement would surely be Wijnaldum, although I suspect we may have competition from Everton on that approach.

Nevertheless onwards and upwards, hopefully we should have our new manager incoming next week.

SaintsFan29

{Ed002's Note - Southampton has not shown any interest in Wijnaldum.}

1.) 25 Jun 2016 14:07:54
Wijnaldum as a replacement for Wanyama or Mane? As he's very different to both players.

The latest financial results have been published today, commercial growth has gone up by 21% at a figure of £10.1 million. It goes to show what a long way we have to go yet in that area of the club if we want to continue to close the gap with the top six.

Given we have both a new shirt and sponsorship deal for next season I reckon the club will look to double, if not treble that figure in the next two years. Not to take anything anyway from Veho who have been a great sponsor, but there's no doubt the club should be able to grab the interest of a larger commercial brand now.

It's also stated that although the club's debt is higher than intended, there's plans in place to reduce it. That doesn't mean we will or won't see another summer transfer window like 2014, as Katharina Liebherr may also have plans in place to equitise the debt having done so previously.

SaintsFan29

1.) 09 Oct 2015 23:08:20
How in the hell are we in debt!?! With all the player sales tv money and making a profit? It doesn't make sense?

2.) 10 Oct 2015 00:16:15
I would imagine it's down to the Staplewood redevelopment mostly, it's been well publicised by the club that the costs were over double the original intended, plus there was an increase in the wage bill during that time. There's still an overall increase in profit for the club, so there's no doubt the club are able to sustain control over this debt figure.

30 Sep 2015 10:09:03
I think we should go for a front 3 of Mane, Tadic and Long on Saturday, if you compare the games Swansea and Crystal Palace had against Chelsea they were most effective with a 4-3-3 formation because of the pace they had to break away on the counter with.

If we play Pelle then there's a good chance we will resort to long balls which Zouma and Cahill will be more able to handle.

SaintsFan29

1.) 30 Sep 2015 13:49:29
I thought the Chelsea defence were more vulnerable to direct threats. Something which Pelle brings. In the match against Newcastle both Zouma and Cahill showed that their vulnerability against direct crosses, Ayoze's goal and Wijnaldum's, plus the winner Porto scored yesterday were down to poor float crosses and set piece defending from Chelsea. I think Pelle would be most effective. I'm just hoping Tadic is back on the left wing, there's no better time to go against arguably the worst defender in the league so far.

2.) 01 Oct 2015 15:59:12
Pelle has been in very good form though

Minor transfer updates from Koeman's press conference as follows

He didn't want to say anything about Virgil Van Dijk when asked, said 'it was better not to say anything, let's just see.'

Maybe quietly confident? Or more likely as has been confirmed from one of the Ed's the situation is difficult and not likely to be resolved until later in the transfer window.

And the other point was Leon Goretzka was confirmed as not a target. Koeman said not on 'his list'. Was asked who is, naturally he kept his cards to his chest.

Suggestions coming out of France that Lille are worried they won't get their valuation for Boufal, who they need to sell in order to progress their own transfer plans.

This maybe one Saints are sitting back on.

Interestingly FC Twente are in need of selling Hakim Ziyech as well, who I believe we have also been linked with. Would fall much nearer to our price range.

Both signing would be the real pipe dream mind!

SaintsFan29

1.) 19 Jul 2016 12:26:09
I very much hope we get one of these two. Needing a player like this after mane's gone and especially in case dusan goes too.

2.) 19 Jul 2016 16:04:47
Boufal is injured now apparently and could be out for a while, so him missing pre-season wouldn't be ideal.

3.) 19 Jul 2016 18:30:12
To be fair he's been injured since the start of May. Despite this our links to him have been prevalent this summer, I imagine the club's medical staff would be able to determine the severity and timescale on a return if interest gets serious.

4.) 19 Jul 2016 19:41:00
He's out until mid-Sept.

11 Jul 2016 22:55:44
Really impressed by Pierre Højberg's signing, I feel like it represents a key marker for us in our recent history.

To think just about less than five years ago we had sold Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Arsenal.

Now here we are signing a young player of a similar mould, albeit he is already more established than the Ox was back then, and willing to join us from Bayern Munich of all clubs!

If we continue to bring in young, hungry players who's attitude from day one is "I want to develop my game at Southampton", we truly are going places.

Exciting times, farewell to Pelle as well, was a great stop-gap to Lambert, now it's Austin/ Long's turn to lead the line.

SaintsFan29

1.) 12 Jul 2016 00:19:35
Not J-Rod?

2.) 12 Jul 2016 07:57:29
Would absolutely love to see J-Rod back to his best, pre-season will tell on that but you'd have to expect Long and Austin will be picked ahead of him initially. Plus there's always the chance Puel will play him wide left where he's always looked most effective for us.

3.) 12 Jul 2016 09:00:59
as a supporter for three seasons this is the most excited I've been about a signing. I seriously can barely believe we got him and he was so keen to come.

4.) 12 Jul 2016 12:05:40
Why wouldn't he be keen to come? let's be fair by the time he is 24 he's going to be at a club like Liverpool, Man U or Spurs. Earning in excess of £100,000 a week! that's what Saints do for young players, the lad seemingly has sense and understands what the move here will do for his career.

5.) 12 Jul 2016 13:53:47
PEH looks like the love child of Anders Svensson and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

04 Jun 2016 09:24:30
Haven't posted on here in quite a while but what better time is there to return to the fray then with Koeman on the verge of leaving and some of our supporters having an absolute meltdown about it.

Now having gone through all of this with Poch, I can say I'm not upset, disappointed yes. And likewise I don't believe the board will be on panic stations.

If anything Les Reed's blunder video, appears to be more like a well-timed promotion piece, first to make Koeman look like a fool for his subsequent u-turn and secondly to sell the club to the next manager, with the new 5-year plan tantalisingly on the horizon and the promise of further investment.

Why should the club push to keep Koeman if his head is turned in the exact same way as some players? Yes there is an attractive opportunity for investment at Everton but we've seen with other clubs before, some succeeded, Man City and Chelsea namely, others failed miserably, Leeds, Portsmouth, most recently Newcastle. It's a massive gamble he is taking.

Saints want commitment. The head turning is so apparent, just look on social media at any of our local journalists who have been taken aback given Koeman's continual assurances about seeing out his contract to them.

Everything hasn't been rosy either. We may have upset the apple cart in the league, but there's also been a lot of that in the club this season. At some point Koeman managed to upset his bright-eyed boy Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Sadio Mané. Perhaps that could of being handled better.

But more alarmingly has been the door closure on our youth academy. Now I'm not saying we have outstanding players a la Marcus Rashford, but across the season there was a serious lack of young prospects getting an opportunity. That again falls at the feet of Koeman.

Koeman is a loss, no doubt. We've played some excellent football under him. But we did the same under Poch and there's no reason to believe we can't do the same with our next manager.

SaintsFan29

1.) 04 Jun 2016 10:24:36
Well said 29. I know he hasn't officialy gone but we all know and need to be realistic that this sort of thing happens in football now. If this was a player like vic we would be clamouring for him to go as his head was turned. An incoming manager will be more hungry than one seeing out his final year knowing he wants to go. If he also said in dutch news column that he had got as much as he could out of players perhaps a change is a good thing anyway. There are some good managers out there with european experience and that is who I hope les and ralph are looking at rather than newish coaches. Not having to play qualifiers may also be a plus point for anyone coming in. We will still support the club we love.

2.) 04 Jun 2016 11:08:41
Agree with everything bar the youth academy. It is still producing good talent and we have some top notch players coming through, with the moment that is forever increasing in the premier league it is just a little more difficult for them to break through. Don't forget that at the Toulon tournament England had 4 players on the pitch that had come through our academy.

3.) 04 Jun 2016 20:59:43
I didn't say we weren't producing any good players anymore, just that Koeman had closed the door on the pathway.

17 Oct 2015 17:14:09
A game of two halves and the sooner that the second half is forgotten about the better. Bad luck with the injuries to Davis and Cedric seemed to be so costly as our structure completely fell apart when they went off. We should of matched them as a 4-4-2 from that point on as Mane and Tadic were continuously caught bombing forward and that left massive gaps on the wings for Leicester to utilise.

Give credit where it's due, Leicester have found a knack at breaking teams apart this season, so it's not just us! That's why it isn't the worse result, we keep our unbeaten run going into the Liverpool game.

SaintsFan29

1.) 17 Oct 2015 18:05:16
I'm sorry but Ronald Koeman has to take the blame for that today .
I didn't see an injury to Steven Davis and cannot warrant taking him off when we were obviously under the cosh from a very spirited Foxes side. They bought on two very good players in Mahrez and Dyer and we struggled. Why then take off a good MF player in Davis and stick on an untested in PL terms Jordy Classie ( who looked completely out of his depth ) .
Also, got to say it again but Yoshida is not a right back. I know Soares had the head knock but surely a dizzy Soares is better than a dodgey Yoshida.
Any way say what you like but our second half performance was awful and my daughters U 11 side would have torn us apart.

2.) 17 Oct 2015 20:27:58
Murdered by a team that wanted to win against a side that thought after going 2 - 0 up that they could see it out . Mane and Pelle hardly had a kick due to Leicester not letting them . Credit where it is due, they were the best team we have played this season so far and we looked very poor in the second half. What happened there! Got a feeling RK will be slinging a few hair dryers. Classie may be a good player but do you think that it was a mistake to bring him on when we were really struggling? To me Romeu would have been the answer but also after Wanyama got booked in the first half the game changed . We were two up but not playing well, what's happened in 2 weeks? Crazy game football at this level .

3.) 17 Oct 2015 22:51:05
Cedric's head injury was just above the eye and the swelling meant it was affecting his vision, it was inevitable we were going to bring him off at some point. As for Davis he might of picked up a knock in the first half, he went off the pitch but did seem okay afterwards. Clearly Koeman thought neither were worth risking any further though. But whether or not we think their substitutions were warranted, the fact was we didn't adapt to the situation. We stood still and allowed the pressure to be heaped on until we conceded.

I was just as angry about it as most supporters to see us collapse like that, but at the end of the day it's more representative of how well Leicester are playing right now. They did the exact same at Stoke, did the full turnaround at home to Villa, as well as pick up late draws with Bournemouth and Tottenham. In that respect we are no worse off than the majority of sides they've come up against this season.

4.) 17 Oct 2015 23:05:36
Leicester were hungrier, fitter, faster. I'm sorry to say that they wanted it more than Saints. All three of Koeman's substitutions made the side weaker.

This was worse than the Man United defeat. At least in the second half of that game they outclassed us. Leicester just out-desired us. That's criminal, and the lack of fight and leaders on the pitch when the tide turned was pathetic. They all went missing.

Good luck for the trip to Anfield to play Klopp's Liverpool next week. If they couldn't cope with Leicester's intensity, they're going to get absolutely steamrollered (unless he seriously injuries another couple of players in training) .

5.) 18 Oct 2015 09:04:55
Completely agree Qwertyell, but I do think Koeman's hands were tied when it came to the substitutions. Injury concerns with the first two, then the Tadic for Jay Rod change was done merely in hope of a counter attacking opportunity as we know he offers nothing defensively. Lots of supporters have said why didn't he bring on Romeu, the obvious answer is he'd be suspended against Liverpool if he picked up a booking, as is his trend. Keep him for the bigger game next weekend.

Hopefully we get a response from the team at Liverpool, we know we are more than capable after besting Chelsea and Swansea.

6.) 18 Oct 2015 14:17:00
Having watched the extended highlights of yesterday's game and their goals they were both down to Van Dyck . He should have at least got a tackle in on Dyer for the first and Vardy left him for dead for the second, he has to get himself in front of the player and read the game better . I am sure he will improve but at the moment he is still learning to be a centre half and not get forward so much . I still think Romeu should have come on instead of Clasie, I am far from convinced Clasie is going to be what we were expecting him to be . Really poor decision by Ronald to bring him on .

{Ed001's Note - I am glad I am not the only person that thought it was VVD at fault! I know Ed007 raves about him, but I just don't see it at all. Physically impressive, but he is far too laid back and drops off too far. He should be more imposing with his physique, but he just doesn't bully forwards at all.}

7.) 18 Oct 2015 18:56:51
He was at fault for dutch midweek as well.

8.) 18 Oct 2015 20:49:56
Van Dijk has had a couple of eye-catchingly good games (Chelsea, Swansea) and a couple of noticeably poor games (United, Leicester) .

I wouldn't have thought wild inconsistency is something a team is looking for in their centre backs, but there you go.

He didn't cover himself in glory on either goal - giving the ball away casually and then getting easily beaten by Dyer for the first goal, and then completely losing Vardy's run for the second - but other players failed in their jobs too.

For the first goal, Vardy was the only player Dyer could hit in the box, and yet Fonte and Clasie were both marking thin air.

On the second goal, Vardy would've been offside if Yoshida had held the line. But expecting Yoshida to make it through even half a game without contributing to an opposition goal is probably a bit optimistic.

So, yes, Van Dijk didn't have much of a game and has plenty to prove, but he wasn't alone in underperforming. What happened to the midfield once Davis went off? They neither protected the defence, won possession, or supplied the attack.

Really poor day at the office for Saints. Deflated all of the feel-good factor from the Chelsea win.

9.) 19 Oct 2015 10:23:57
Taking off Davis seemed strange to me. I thought he was hurt as he banged his fist on the ground after the tackle in the first half - but seemed fine, so I was surprised he was taken off. It seemed that RK just wanted to bring on his £8m Spider replacement - who looked thoroughly out of his depth. What Virgil was trying to do to Dyer when the only thing he could do was cross the ball was bewildering and the second half somehow reminded me of L1 - naively letting Leicester come on to us again and again and again. At least we didn't have Danny Higginbotham score an own goal 4 minutes in to added on time!

21 Sep 2015 09:43:20
That was a tough loss yesterday, we could of had it wrapped up were it not for the post and some top saves by De Gea. It did dawn in me after the game how contrasting our goalkeepers are, De Gea can make the difference between a win, a loss and a draw for United. Whereas Stekelenberg has yet to show that trait for us this season but Forster did.

It seemed like our defence needlessly invited pressure on themselves in the lead up to their equaliser. Pelle could have given the foul away, in fact there was a real trend of ifs and buts in this match.

The underhit pass from Yoshida was a real thing of beauty, that should tell Koeman why Yoshi is better as cover for centre back and not as a full back. The third goal was luck on United's part as the goalpost returned it to Mata's feet who made no mistake. But again our defence was not alert enough.

We're sixty minutes on and Pelle scores his second, why did it take that long for the players to react? Our defence was poor but so was theirs, we need to find a more clinical touch in attack whilst also sorting out the back line. The return of Bertrand will be much appreciated, but right back is still a big issue it would seem. And hate to say it but Fonte isn't playing at the same standard as we all know he can.

SaintsFan29

1.) 21 Sep 2015 14:16:19
spot ob SaintsFan29

2.) 22 Sep 2015 22:37:56
The difference between the goalkeepers is about 40 million pounds , having said all that we gifted United 2 of the goals and I know I am going to be shafted over this comment but Van Dijk was found out big time , he can't stay with his player and stays off him which caused the problem for the two of the goals.

3.) 22 Sep 2015 23:11:03
Completely agree with the van Djik comment, noticed it last week as well as this week, if the balls dropping anywhere between him and Fonte he'll let it bounce rather than clearing it straight away. He's let players in twice doing that so far, got away with it last week when Stek pulled out a great save but this week after Fonte missed a header and he allowed the ball to bounce Martial was quick enough to get there and score

Its possibly because they're a new partnership but it's something that needs to be fixed soon

4.) 23 Sep 2015 18:38:04
No its because vvd isn't as good as a lot of fans make out

5.) 24 Sep 2015 00:11:43
The first 30 minutes Saints were excellent and were unlucky not to be 2-0 up, then for some reason we lost our way and allowed them(Man Utd)to come onto us.
We didn't deserve a win but should have taken something from the game.

Yoshida's error was horrendous and Van Dijk looks unfit and not PL ready, having played in the SPL it will take time for him to adjust.

Good win however in the Capital One Cup gaining a home draw thanks to Le Tiss and still early days in the league, though I'd settle for top ten right now.

6.) 24 Sep 2015 11:59:16
Your comments just re-emphasise to me that RK played the wrong tactics against United , he should have played Soares . The MU defence was struggling when we were pressing and giving them no space , I am still mystified why we stood off them from 30 minutes in ( and this was not MU improving causing it )and then he took Romeu off . Very puzzling .

7.) 25 Sep 2015 21:54:51
And chasing the game he bought on Davis???

Sounds too good to be true if it's both Tello and Montoya. But we have been linked with Tello and Montoya would be excellent competition for Cedric at RB so it is plausible.

Would be quite the impressive first post from yourself if this happens Simwhi02.

Like I said on the other post, the club have done everything their side of things to keep hold of him.

Personally I think we could resist offers this summer by simply playing the same card as we did for Schneiderlin and Wanyama, if Van Dijk were to wantaway, but for the moment there's no indication of that being necessitated.

We should appreciate what the Eds share with us, and not get carried away in thinking we are now invincible to outgoings just because a player signs a long term deal.

Van Dijk is ambitious, if we can continue to provide success on the pitch then yes we may keep him beyond this season. But all the same its not out of the realm of impossibility he could depart.

The club have done all they can on their side of things in having him sign a long-term contract but there's no knowing how he and his agent would react if a big club came calling.

SaintsFan29

{Ed001's Note - if the likes of Man City (who are interested in him as a Kompany replacement/cover) make a move for him, who really thinks he will stay?}

I don't think we're that far along with this one, I suspect an enquiry and not much more.

We have also been linked with Steaua Bucharest's Nicusor Stanciu, he tends to play as a number 10, a key role for Puel's system, and would possibly be available at a sensible price.

SaintsFan29

{Ed002's Note - Stanciu is certainly available as Lorient has had an offer for Steaua Bucharest's Nicolae Stanciu accepted and the player must decide whether to make the move to France or wait to see if other options are available.}

Not necessarily three reasons why he will be a success, but certainly three reasons why Saints would be interested in Klinsmann's appointment.

Firstly he has achieved some of the highest honours as a footballer so will undoubtedly command respect from the squad. Same as Koeman in this respect.

Secondly his style of football is attacking, fast-paced and is often ambiguous. Players responsibilities change, tactics change very frequently. I would imagine this aspect would be the sticking point the board may have, he does not tend to stick to a winning system for too long, but tries to adapt it for versatility.

Thirdly his record as a coach is very consistent, remarkably it seems the USMNT feel Klinsmann has taken them as far as he can, but he's never failed to make a mark at a team he has managed. In comparison Koeman had failures at both Benfica and Valencia before eventually coming to manage at Saints.

According to WhoScored, he was the 20th best player in Ligue 1 last season. Stats aren't the be all end all for knowing how good a player is, however he's clearly someone Puel trusts to do a decent job for us when called upon.

I agree with Tello, albeit it's being suggested our interest was tied to Ronald Koeman and not necessarily the club and Puel.

As for Schweinsteiger, all you're paying for now is the name and not the talented footballer he once was. He'd be much more suited to a move to the MLS or somewhere.
