Just don't get this talk of refreshing football, entertaining, so different from last season. We had many, many chances to win that game today but in the first half had one effort on goal. The second half they parked the bus and we huffed and puffed but couldn't score.

Get real people no goals again at home, not good enough. The team played well but three players in particular were poor today in particular JWP who still looks less than a top class player. Redmond runs around like a maniac with no end product and Gabbiadini who just couldn't get in to the game. Bertrand was outstanding but apart from that the rest played ok but ran out of ideas.

We played a very average team today and if we don't put away these chances created we will get beaten more often than not. Our record of not scoring at home is shortly going to enter the record books which to be honest is just a disgrace and I think the excuses have just about run out.

So, was it as bad as last year?
Lots of posters wanted Puel out due to the style of play. And in seasons past we have often struggled to get through a parked bus.
Comments from spectators today we're that the style of play was much better, but maybe another signing, a number 10 maybe, is needed.
I think Gabiadini instead of Tadic and Austin up front is an option.

2.) 13 Aug 2017 07:27:28
Chris I take it you were at the game. I wasn't but watched it on TV. I thought JWP had a good game. Gabbiadini didn't look that great to me. I've said in the past that I don't think he is everything everyone keeps going on about. Would have preferred to start Austin from the beginning. I do agree with you about Redmond though.
It was much better football to watch. We created 28 attempts on goal during the match to Swanseas 4.
We need to learn to convert them.

3.) 13 Aug 2017 09:04:12
Play Boufal from the start in place of jwp and put Gabbi behind Austin. So they can interchange and work together that's what we need.

4.) 13 Aug 2017 09:18:59
Cyprus as always I was at the game and yes we did create a lot of chances but only had 2 on target in the whole match. That is not good enough especially for a home game, you would hope for more than that away from home. Believe me JWP had a poor game, caught in possession a few times and no strength to hold the opposition off. Blew two clear cut chances from crosses in the first half, if you are supposed to be as good as people make him out to be he has to do better, he is well known for his crossing ability at set pieces but yesterday couldn't clear the first man on two or three occasions. He was substituted with 20 minutes to go. Other people may have seen his performance differently but I thought he was the poorest player on the pitch yesterday.

5.) 13 Aug 2017 10:36:05
I think it's time for Tadic to be dropped. He slows things down so much and takes all the speed out of our counter attacks.

6.) 13 Aug 2017 11:58:15
One thing which Puel hardly did last season and MP doesn't look like doing is playing 2 up top. Gabs is good at holding up play. He can't run at defenders I'd wanna see two players up front and see if there's a difference. Gabs and long possibly. I don't rate long but him playing Gabs could be affective and if we do sign Vietto thathe could.
We've got a big squad but I'm not convinced MPZ knows the best formation yet. Saying that he's new to the Prem new, doesn't know his team.

7.) 13 Aug 2017 12:56:50
I watched the game, thought we dominated well. If we play like that the goals will come, have faith. Looking forward to seeing Lemina in our team, I think we have to just credit Swansea tbf as they defended very well. On another day we could've had two pens and Tadic/ Yoshida finish the sitters they missed but it wasn't one of those days.

8.) 13 Aug 2017 16:46:25
Thought Prowsey had a great first half yesterday, second half he could influence the game as much due to them parking the bus. Thought he played well further forward.

9.) 14 Aug 2017 09:58:24
I thought it was just a carbon copy of most games from last season. If they'd have panned the camera and Puel on the touchline, it wouldn't have registered. We only ever have one natural finisher on the field at once, and then hardly ever get the ball to them.

Redmond is great, until he thinks about shooting, then he panics. He needs some mental training to get him to maintain composure when shooting.

10 Aug 2017 13:24:11
Why do we seem to be interested in Vietto when the only position we don't seem concerned about is CB? I find this very confusing.

chrisdownj

1.) 10 Aug 2017 13:46:41
I think they will be concerned about CB position but aren't going to air that publicly. Any club we try and get a player from will demand a higher fee. It's not just CB we need thought, we need a new creative player and Vietto could be a great addition to cover that space or play of the striker.

2.) 10 Aug 2017 16:24:03
We're almost definitely on the hunt for a new CB. We kept the signing of Lemina quiet, I would imagine we are doing the same here. The trouble is the negotiations that are probably taking place. If we sell VVD for 60m then whoever we try to sign the clubs will be like we want X for this player because they know that we will need the CB and have the cash. This is why we are seeing rumours for a 30m rated Ben Gibson.

3.) 10 Aug 2017 18:31:27
We've been linked to three cb's?

Would quite like Vietto, although I wouldn't say he's an upgrade on Gabbi. Unless we plan on playing 2 up front I'd say we're fine up front with Gabbi/ Austin depending what type of striker we want and then long and Gallagher.

Vietto seems a good player but if we sign him surely either him or Gabbi will just get lost in the shuffle and won't reach his potential. I think if we sign a striker it should be a youngster who'd accept a smaller role rather than a reclamation project who needs game time now.

09 Aug 2017 10:57:12
Lots of you keep saying to make Romeu the captain which I totally understand. However the problem may be his aggressive style of play which may mean he could be missing for matches due to suspension. I think Ryan Bertrand would be a good candidate, great player and well respected within the club. Just a thought.

chrisdownj

1.) 09 Aug 2017 11:35:52
I think Bertrand would run as soon as a big club came knocking. I do like him, but that's a problem. FF could be a good candidate. JWP also, he's the longest serving player at the club, seems to be passionate about the club a great example of a role model to young academy players.

2.) 09 Aug 2017 12:13:13
Don't agree about FF it's all he can do to get through a game without making major errors let alone telling the rest of the team where they are going wrong. You say Bertrand would run a mile but I have heard nothing about him wanting to leave just a load of media twaddle stirring things up. You know it seems to me the media and the pundits can't accept that we are an established PL club and we are here long term . About time they all left us alone to get on with business.

3.) 09 Aug 2017 14:11:48
Saintjay, I think you most probably spot on. Bertrand would wish to consider his options should a big club declare interest, as well he should. It's good to see you guys coming to terms with the realities of football, albeit in baby steps. Should do your health a world of good.

You by no means have an incompetent management as led by Mr Reed . Am sure that provision will be made should any of your top players wish to move, as always has been the case.

Am sure those among you who've seen the club thru the worst times will know better to be more sanguine and less "in a state" about these things and that you'll still have a good club to support in the "best" league in the world.

4.) 09 Aug 2017 14:35:03
I can't believe city and or Chelsea haven't come in for Bertrand he is clearly the best English lb in the country ATM (rose injured) and played well in the back of a centre 3. That would require a club to approach Southampton for permission have it granted and then to talk wages and contracts. Rather than fly him off tell him you love him and offer him the world ala klippity. Liverpool will not make top 4 with a new defence and or goalie guaranteed. Not one proven quality player in the back 5.

{Ed002's Note - Manchester City did but stepped back because they still require a forward and a centre back ahead of an expensive left back. Chelsea may well yet speak to Southampton about Bertrand but have not done so yet.}

5.) 09 Aug 2017 15:12:04
Klopp and Liverpool's conduct in this matter has been nothing short of appalling, unethical and unprofessional.
There's NO disputing that, absolutely. Many LFC fans, I included, had been particularly scathing and were welcoming of any potential punishment.

It transpired that the matter went, and remains, on file, as Ed02 has kindly updated us.
Crucially, Liverpool DROPPED their interest and are now COMPLETELY out of the picture.
Whatever happens now re VVD, Liverpool no longer has any involvement.

Wouldn't it thus be fair, particularly on you folks, to move on from this, especially with respect to Liverpool? Bulk of LFC fans have accepted VVD issue as dead in the water and have moved on, as well they should.

It is unfortunate the situation we've created for your clube and skipper.
As Ed02 points out, VVD position now untenable. He'll likely have to be sold now.
Perhaps you'll find solace and some form of justice in the fact that he won't be going to Liverpool.

One would hope you may get the best price for him and be able to make proper provision for his sale.

And lastly, Ed02, what does it mean when a complaint is "on file"? To be honest, most of us had expected Southampton to follow thru harder with this issue. It seemed necessary that they do so. What's going on?

6.) 09 Aug 2017 15:23:08
The Southampton fans don't harp on about this matter anything like as much as the Liverpool fans do. "On file" means it remains with the Premier League who have thus far done nothing about it at all.}

7.) 09 Aug 2017 16:59:23
Tell the Liverpool ex players to give it up that sick it's redknapp on the bandwagon now it is pitiful there is not one player in the Liverpool back 5 would get in a fully fit saints team hence the desperation for VVD it ain't going to happen and it will cost them dear. Now for counting to Barcelona please 🍾.

07 Aug 2017 17:14:06
VVD handed in a transfer request, now let's get rid and bring in a quality replacement. Thank god for that.

chrisdownj

1.) 07 Aug 2017 17:45:28
The more I look into this with virgil the more it really pisses me off. A, why sign a 6 year deal last summer if he wanted out a year later. B, why be appointed team captain in feb if for "the last 6 months" he has been looking for a move. C, why bitter about being fined 2 weeks wages when he hasn't played since feb and "wasnt in the right mindset" to take part in pre season. If we all weren't in the right frame of mind for work. then we get sent home unpaid! And finally, he "wants to win honours" then why have his heart set on liverpool. seriously man.

2.) 07 Aug 2017 18:42:06
I will give you three simple answers Lukeyboy . 1. Money . 2. Money. 3. Money ( this time for the money grabbing, spineless, stab your grandmother in the back agent ) .

3.) 07 Aug 2017 18:56:29
We should still stand strong. Just because he's handed in a transfer request doesn't mean he will go. A number of top class players have tried and the club's refused to accept.
And Liverpool still can't make a bid until we accept and allow him to talk to clubs. But another clubs can bid.
If you do sell, obviously anyone other than them.

4.) 07 Aug 2017 19:01:55
"I would like Southampton to consider the interest in me from top clubs should it still exist, " he said.

Van Dijk added: "I have been left frustrated by the club's position that I am not for sale and am disappointed that enquiries from multiple top clubs have been consistently rebuffed.

YOU SIGNED A SIX YEAR CONTRACT . that's why the club says you are not for sale .

As a proud professional I am insulted by the suggestion that it was me who refused to train and so feel it is important to point out the true version of events

Proud Professional? then grow up, get your mind straight and get back out their with your team mates!

5.) 07 Aug 2017 19:11:32
Yeah but they just handed saints an extra £7,000,000 by handing in an OFFICIAL transfer request and giving up his ( joke ) loyalty bonus so good riddance to bad rubbish keep him till Xmas then dump him for as much as we can get.

6.) 07 Aug 2017 19:12:19
Agree with all you have said, but I'd imagine (and feel free to correct me Ed) that when VVD signed the deal he had an understanding with the club regarding his sale, given that he knew he was likely in line for a big move soon. By signing the deal both he and the club would make more money from this transfer, so that's probably why he signed it and I empathise with him to an extent if this was the case.

Still, no excuse for his lack of class in then trying to enforce that agreement if it existed. If it didn't, then his behaviour is truly shameful.

Only thing I don't agree with is you saying we shouldn't sell him to Liverpool. Understand why you said it, but is the principle really worth taking less money if Liverpool are willing to pay notably more? Can see both sides of it but I'd say take the highest offer if you're going to sell.

7.) 07 Aug 2017 19:27:36
i was also wondering from the clubs prospective. Surely if what virgil is saying is true, then the club were aware of him wanting out this summer. Then why appoint him team captain when so many others are more deserving. Maybe i'm thinking a bit too old school but to me a captain of the team should be a leader who sets the example and is proud to wear the shirt. Not a great example he is setting for others.

8.) 07 Aug 2017 19:28:07
Rich- I do agree, keep him until next window then do business with clubs that might want to take a player that throws his dummy out of the pram when things don't go his way. He is a Very good player BUT
we can get 3 more Very good players in now, with the money we will get. We had to do without him for half of last season, so we can do again, I would like to see another CB come in very quickly, plus another forward in case we go back to my preferred system, 2 up front.

9.) 07 Aug 2017 20:04:14
I feel this could actually be quite detrimental in a couple of ways. The question asked is absolutely spot on. why would he sign the extension, become captain if within 6 months his wish was for a new challenge. Was he sold on a promise of something? Also as has been the case before saints are able to attract a certain caliber of player as a bit of a stepping stone and players will or could see this as a bit of a grey mark? Now if this is the club embarking on a new stance then great I'm all for it but is that going to be the case .?

10.) 07 Aug 2017 20:17:21
Agree on the 2 up front g. smith - what happened to good old-fashioned strike partnerships. I think Gabbi could excel with the right player alongside him as well.

11.) 07 Aug 2017 20:42:50
I think we've gone too far with this to back down now, got to stay strong to show our intent of actually building a squad and being pushovers.

12.) 08 Aug 2017 00:51:53
Making a killing on a player we paid 4 - 5 times less than his current value and who doesn't want to play for us is just plain common sense. That is not backing down it is just simply great business. We really just need to move on .

13.) 08 Aug 2017 06:29:10
Personally don't care where he goes as long as we get the best price for him. Plus I wouldn't actually mind if we kept him for a year and let him rot in the reserves. If the quotes are true then he really has no class. Gibson would be my first choice replacement. Get him in alongside Stephens.
Still think we need to trim away some of the dead wood in the squad. We are overloaded with "nearly good" midfielders, plus Long needs to move on too.

14.) 08 Aug 2017 07:06:39
LFC fan here, I come in peace. I'm not here to gloat (not your regular LFC fan probably I know), but just wondered what your opinions are on the player generally. I know prices for players this window are inflated, but is he better than Fonte do you think? Unfortunately every club (even Barca) are finding it difficult to hang onto and even sign players this summer. By the way, Southampton are a great club IMO, not convinced by MP being your new manager but I hope you have a good season whatever happens!

15.) 08 Aug 2017 07:24:09
I think this VVD thing could lead to a situation. M Pel was told by the club as part of his incoming that the big players won't be sold. If VVD goes, how do you think that would leave the relationship between manager and club? Straight away having the carpet pulled from under his feet.

16.) 08 Aug 2017 07:30:22
I don't even think LFC will necessarily sign him by the way, just a query for your opinions of the quality of the player, if any. Thanks.

17.) 08 Aug 2017 07:46:34
I'd rather have two or three hungry for game time players than one over paid, arrogant bad apple!

Ship him out to anyone but LFC and get on with the season

It's all very boring now.

18.) 08 Aug 2017 07:59:56
Olrish - VVD is a class player and the best we've had since we came into the Prem. As much as his recent actions have soured things, I think he is a genuinely world class CB who combines excellent poise and skill on the ball with physical dominance and great instincts.

19.) 08 Aug 2017 08:12:20
Agree 123, he has the ability to become one of the best as long as he stays focused, and he can finish too. I think he is one of the best centre halfs I've ever seen at st Mary's. including Claus.

20.) 08 Aug 2017 09:32:02
Appreciate the info. guys, thanks.
What can Liverpool do to re-build the relationship with Saints?
We have taken a few players from you when you looked to be going places I know, but this happens to us as well.
The tapping up incident, while wrong obviously, I hope is a new beginning now for us and genuinely hope we repair the damage done.
If we were to offer an over the top cash plus player exchange deal, would that mend anything do you feel?
I think it'd be a mistake from both ends if we didn't fix this 100%.
Who knows, one day we might have a player or players that you desperately need or vice versa obviously.

{Ed002's Note - From Southampton's perspective they would like Liverpool and Klopp charged for this and subsequently banned from making transfers for a year or two. What they don't need is condescending posts from people like you.}

21.) 08 Aug 2017 10:55:40
In reply to our Liverpool friend I think toby aldeverield is the better defender but vvd better coming out with the ball, toby would probably get you more goals over the season.

22.) 08 Aug 2017 13:56:40
I don't think we can back down, as it will send a message to the rest of our squad that if they want to leave all they have to do is throw a big tantrum, I'd rather keep at this point, just to prove a point.

23.) 08 Aug 2017 14:52:07
Legit question for the Southampton fans, not attempting to be condescending at all thanks.
I was asking with 100% sincerity.
My question still stands.
I wish none of this ever happened, not all LFC or our fans are to blame and I'd never rub anyone's nose in it.
You maybe should see the best in people, not the worst.
I understand you can't decipher my meaning from a text, but I can promise I am not attempting to be condescending, my apologies to anyone if that's what was taken from the above, I genuinely want it to be resolved. Please don't assume all LFC fans are the same, I understand you take abuse off of Muppets behind the scenes here but I'm not here for that bud.

24.) 08 Aug 2017 15:04:41
Thanks to all who replied, I genuinely hope LFC sorts this out and makes things right with your club however we can.
You lot have a great club down there and if it means anything, I'm genuinely sorry we have done this, you deserve better than that.
I whope that you are compensated financially at least.
Good luck this season.

25.) 09 Aug 2017 00:45:14
tell me ed002 what makes olrish rev 1 comments condescesending everybody taps up players from other clubs one way or the other. VVD wants to aspire to bigger things that southampton cannot provide. really. it is just unfortunate that your club is more or less a stepping stone to other top clubs and more unfortunately that tapping up players from other clubs has become a normal norm. punish klopp and liverpool really! We all knew that was never going to happen. The fact is that tapping or no tapping up southampton would not want to sell him anyway so stop making it as if this was the reason why they do not want to sell him to liverpool in the first place.

{Ed002's Note - What Klopp and Liverpool have done is not the norm. Liverpool as you know are bottom of the pile in European football for unprofessional behavior and making illegal approaches. People like you think it is OK to unsettle professional players who are contracted to other teams and turn them in to damaged goods. You think it OK for Liverpool to screw up the career of a 2 year old boy and plunge his parents in to debt whilst lying to the investigation and trying to persuade the boy's parents to lie. You no doubt are proud of the ban that Liverpool are currently serving and the pending court case. You are a person who clearly knows nothing of the game.}

26.) 09 Aug 2017 12:22:48
Ed, fair play on the honesty. Although I didn't read Olrish message as being anything but genuine, your comments are spot on IMO, especially in response to Lallana20.

The biggest offenders here are the powers that be, that continually allow Liverpool to act in this way. I am sure there are teams that have been hammered for less.

Re VVD, I understand the point about money paid to him and the comparison if the average joe was offered more they would go, but this is different because of the money they earn.

I think us fans would understand more if all concerned acted appropriately, including the player and LFC.

It is a little naive to say "he signed a 6 year deal, so why does he want to leave". Personally, as a business - if we can get 60-70 million, I say sell him and get a couple of hungry players in, who have potential to sell on and keep to the model.

Great site by the way!

05 Aug 2017 13:27:00
I was just sat here thinking how football has gone completely to the dogs due to the crazy money involved. How can it be right that one footballer can be transferred for more or less the amount we are trying to sell 80% controlling share of our football club and semi struggling to do so. It is just complete madness. Financial fair play? What a joke.

chrisdownj

{Ed002's Note - What is the concern with FFP?}

1.) 05 Aug 2017 14:00:19
I am sure you will put me right Ed.002 but it just seems ludicrous to me that the most wealthy clubs in this country and in Europe are gradually gaining more and more power. I believe they are more or less able to do what they like due to their commercial value. Many of the top clubs are only rich on paper from what I gather. Just think that this situation is tempting lesser clubs to get in to debt to try and survive in the PL. I personally feel it is a dangerous practice that has been brought about by there being too much money in the game. I am not the youngest of supporters so maybe I am living in the past back to the days of striving to obtain the best you could for your club whilst living more or less within your means. That seems a faint memory.

{Ed002's Note - It is not due to their commercial value Chris but to the income they can generate. They must all still meet FFP, the point of which is to help clubs getting in to debt.}

2.) 05 Aug 2017 14:13:57
I understand that and thanks for your response. I am a bit confused though doesn't it more or less go hand in hand that if your commercial value is massive the likelihood of the club generating income from sales and sponsorship etc. is very likely to be massive as well? A sort of snowball effect?

{Ed002's Note - Not necessarily - the income is the important matter when determining what can be spent - the value is of no consequence.}

3.) 05 Aug 2017 14:22:27
It's just part of a strategic plan for the richest clubs to move to a super league, by preventing investment at less rich clubs. Think of the football equivalent of Elysium.

{Ed002's Note - The clubs involved in the discussions about a breakaway pan European league are not all of the richest clubs - and many of the very wealthy clubs are not in that group, and several sides who are further down in finacial terms are in that "elite" group.}

4.) 05 Aug 2017 14:36:21
They may not be the richest clubs planning this breakaway but I would imagine their intent in forming this Super League is to tempt the mega rich to invest in them and hence become one of these clubs. Just my opinion and thanks for your input Ed appreciated as always.

{Ed002's Note - No that isn't the case Chris. Such discussions have never been held. They are not looking for investment at all. They meet again on August 24 and the majority of the agenda relates to fairly mundain issues.}

5.) 05 Aug 2017 18:44:47
I do not believe this super league will ever become a thing! The premier league clubs like the financial funds the premier league brings and I feel a super league is a stupid idea and would completely destroy the whole point of the leagues in the first place. Idk I just get the feeling it's an attempt by other leagues to get a piece of the pie. I maybe wrong ed tbh but I'm just struggling to get to grips with this mess of an idea.

Does anybody think that Arnautovic should get more than the normal red card ban? What he did to Jack Stevens was pre-meditated and could have had serious consequences, just wonder why he did it. There was no advantage to be gained and to me we don't want players in the game that do that sort of thing. Ronaldo got a five match ban for a petulant touch of the referee which was totally wrong but this was an action that could have caused major injury. I would give Arnautovic a 6 match ban and he might think twice next time.

chrisdownj

1.) 20 Aug 2017 18:09:35
Well I don't think he was happy with the previous challenge just before the noble on lemina foul. I think noble should get disciplinary action but would imagine arnautovic will be the standard ban.

2.) 20 Aug 2017 22:28:57
The Lemina challenge was clumsy but not malicious in my opinion. He went in with his elbows raised, but his eye on the ball. No excuse for Noble's subsequent challenge (which was a red card for me), and especially for Arnautovic elbowing Stephens.

3.) 21 Aug 2017 08:00:20
Atlrnautovic is clearly mental hence someone with the undoubted ability he has playing for stoke and West Ham. As for noble looking at the pics of leminas shin he should get 3 games min. On a positive note encouraging to see us get 2 pens when you think we don't normally get that in a season. On a negative two of the worst penalties taken I have ever seen tadic pen was AWFUL some managers get a bit of luck and hopefully this will be ours. Really impressed with his press conferences and Kruger things looking good. Need to look at winning the next three cup and league to give us a platform.

4.) 21 Aug 2017 12:23:51
I thought this season there is supposed to be a panel to look at bad tackles even after the game and have the power to ban the offender because noble needs to be arrested for a tackle like that if not at least a ban.

5.) 21 Aug 2017 20:15:52
I feel sorry for Clasie. Started out getting an injury and never really became part of the starting 11. After getting acclimatised to the Prem, I thought he played well - quick thinking and a good passer of the ball. I hope he gets a good club to fight for. Top man Jordy.

20 Aug 2017 11:32:16
On a positive note ( for once 😄 ) very much impressed with Yoshida yesterday. Could somebody please tell our manager that Tadic is not to take any penalties no matter what. We have played better than we did yesterday and not scored, funny old game.

chrisdownj

1.) 20 Aug 2017 20:21:09
I wasn't at the game but watching the highlights I would say that he was at fault for their equaliser, he was completely the wrong side of the attacker, was caught ball watching and basically gave the attacker a free header which he almost scored from but Hernandez put away the rebound so he may have played well but he is still prone to switching off at crucial times and costing us. Really hope that Virgil sees sense and gets back to playing for us asap!

2.) 20 Aug 2017 20:37:05
Lol
I don't know what tadic does when taking penalties seems to aim for keeper not goal.
And our defence was a lot better
Than wet spams.
gabbi was looking good aswell.

3.) 21 Aug 2017 08:27:26
I remember Bertrand taking a pen last year and just dispatching it into the top corner. Surely he should be on them. Unless JWP or Austin are on the pitch.

4.) 21 Aug 2017 09:38:48
Gabbiadini can hit the ball and seems cool. wonder why he don't want them?

17 Aug 2017 08:59:55
So we can't get a midfield player that can score goals, did you see Harrison Reed's strike for Norwich last night. Now that's the way to do it. Frustrating isn't it.

chrisdownj

1.) 17 Aug 2017 12:29:54
How can you disagree? Why would you, it was just a statement of fact.

2.) 17 Aug 2017 15:01:22
I wasn't the one who disagreed but it was his first senior goal. Wonderful strike, no question about that but it might take 10 games before he scores his next one. Wouldn't call him a goalscoring midfielder yet.

3.) 17 Aug 2017 15:18:04
I don't think you got my point, being, we can't score and we let him go out on loan. It was a tongue in cheek statement considering we couldn't score in a brothel lately and directly he joins another club he scores a screamer. In fact what I meant was, typical. I give up.

4.) 17 Aug 2017 15:44:50
I get what you mean Chris but it's just so pointless and irrelevant. One of our youth players scored one goal in the lower leagues. so what?

The fact that Reed is a holding midfielder makes it even more ridiculous. I'd see your point if this was a young striker or winger out on loan scoring goals.

5.) 17 Aug 2017 16:10:50
Understood chris but you musn't forget that Reed is a defensive midfielder first and foremost, a position where not many expect goals to come from. I don't see anything wrong with the club letting a defensive player go when the team is lacking goals. If it was an attacking player then it'd make more sense. Like I said just because he scored one wonder goal doesn't mean the club made an error in judgement, could be his only single goal this entire season, who knows. Only time will tell.

6.) 17 Aug 2017 16:36:25
I still don't think any of you get what I meant. I just meant that isn't it typical one of our players scores a goal like that for another club when we can't get a goal for love or money. That's all I meant nothing else, I wasn't saying bring him back, just saying isn't it typical that it happened.

7.) 17 Aug 2017 17:06:08
Ah, right. I do find it quite ironic (If I'm using that word correctly) .

8.) 17 Aug 2017 17:07:40
Sorry for the misunderstanding mate.

9.) 17 Aug 2017 21:42:01
That is the word Vick, ironic, wish I had thought of that. Thanks for understanding what I meant.

10.) 18 Aug 2017 17:48:27
I Got What you meant. Pretty obvious you weren't being Literal.

12 Aug 2017 09:17:44
Somebody mentioned bringing Rickie Lambert back to the club. I agree 100% with this, not as a player but as an inspirational coach. He and Le God remain as the best penalty takers the PL has ever seen and by God one thing we're crap at is penalties. He also would be a great motivator to the academy as he was a very average player when he started his career in football but proved that anything is possible if you just keep determined to succeed. I may be being a bit sentimental over this but the man was adored at SFC and always wore his heart on his sleeve. The good feeling he would bring to the club would surely be worth a go and he and us would have nothing to lose.

chrisdownj

1.) 12 Aug 2017 13:58:07
Can't think of many better penalty takers than Lambert or Le Tissier. Shearer, of course. Probably the best three

Where is Lambert heading? I haven't checked for a week or so, but something about Plymouth showing interest. He's still a high level player. No disrespect to the Argyle or anything, but Lambo should still be a regular at a higher level. I'd pick him for Cardiff every time over their other options. I'd have him back at Southampton, no questions asked!

To be fair though, Lambert lived the dream. A great story. To go from being rejected by Liverpool's academy or whatever to having to work in a beetroot factory before playing for various lower division sides, gaining a reputation as a fine frontman, got that crucial move to Bristol Rovers, picked up a lot of interest and showed his pedigree as a goal machine. The move to Southampton was perfect for all parties, and took him (and he took us) to the highest level. Not only did Rickie Lambert become one of the country's leading goal scorers, but he then reached the pinnacle by playing for England. And scoring with his first touch. His first touch! Scoring with his first touch in that important game against Scotland, picking up a handful more caps and being involved in the World Cup squad too. Great stuff. Then of course he also (back to the gist) go his dream come true of playing for his boyhood club, his beloved Liverpool. Shame that didn't really catch fire

But still, what a wonderful career, and, it's not over yet.

2.) 12 Aug 2017 14:27:36
That awkward moment when you realise what you've written is factually incorrect. D'oh, I've just discovered Lambert has already left Cardiff City. The Saints legend is currently without a club

Let's get him then!

09 Aug 2017 20:32:53
Just a quick question to all of you regarding the saga. Do you think SFC are in a very difficult situation with all this and really deep down want to sell him and get the money and move on but can't do this without seeming to look weak.?

chrisdownj

1.) 09 Aug 2017 21:12:07
I think ideally they wanted a bidding war just like anyone who has something for sale.
They would have known the interest and the profit availiable.
Just Liverpool and there snakes tactics .
Flopped it and in the running has messed up the teams confidence when they hear a team mate is trying to force his way out.
But like others have said
Add a good defender to replace the dijk.
The team will look a lot stronger and Mabey back to good old football for a few months .
Come one u reds!

2.) 10 Aug 2017 11:59:16
Liverpool have today turned down an offer of £90 million for Phil C. A taste of their own medicine. Now they might know how it feels for SFC fans!

Another thought strikes me. If Pil C is valued at £90 million plus to Liverpool, surely VVD is valued the same to SFC!

Liverpool have been at this nonsense for years.

All clubs are selling clubs if the price is right.

First and foremost clubs are a business and Secondly they are a football club. Same with universities. First and foremost a business and Secondly a place of learning.

As regards VVD SFC should only sell VVD if any club comes in and meets their valuation. that's what LFC are doing or at least it looks as if that is what LFC are doing. That's business sense!

Guess any Liverpool deal is now well and truly put to bed.

You reap what you sow Klopp!

3.) 10 Aug 2017 12:34:01
Hope coutinho goes with llalana out there season would be doomed before it's started especially with that back 5.

4.) 10 Aug 2017 14:35:32
Country's are corporations to
This is why there is so much corruption in our world.
If there is money to be earned.
Someone is always willing.
Don't make it a good thing though.

5.) 10 Aug 2017 15:04:38
To me all this does is damage him and his image. Sponsors must hate it say he gets a move to Liverpool if that's what he wants and they fail to get champions league and Barcelona come in is it the same again. If players have ambition a sell on is not difficult to include agents know the trigger and tell the buying club. This gives them permission to talk but is never the fee as Suarez showed. I actually feel sorry for him he has had his heard turned by a blonde with a tooth job and a hair job and how many men wouldn't fall for that. Trouble is he will be pig ugly in the am.

6.) 10 Aug 2017 23:38:14
VVD and Coutinhos prices are independent and the likellihood is VVD will join Liverpool for 60 million as there will not be a bidding war, Chelsea have already looked elsewhere and would only consider VVD if the price is right, city have spent a fortune already, Liverpool will go back on their withdrawal and get the player. If I were a saints fan I'd be worried I can see them really dropping this year.

7.) 11 Aug 2017 05:27:04
Sorry don't agree. With or without VVD we are going to have a great season.
As for VVD joining Liverpool I welcome it. Plenty of cash in the bank and then Liverpool slapped with a transfer ban for tapping up.
I'd be more worried about your own club to be fair. The honeymoon period is over for Klopp. When he doesn't deliver again this year you will see more and more of your players heading off looking for silverware.

8.) 11 Aug 2017 08:28:12
Spuds in free fall after the Rose debacle. Let's get Wimmers in quick. Also Patrick Roberts on loan from City would be good and Armstrong from the Celts.

9.) 11 Aug 2017 12:46:30
I think the money is a great notion, as with us if Coutinho goes, money doesn't always translate to Better players, Barcelona at the minute look desperate, Liverpool spurs have both in the past sold a huge player and tried to better the squad it doesn't work that way. especially this late in the window and especially when the rest of the world knows you have more money, your 15 million pound player now costs 25-30 million. I think Everton Bournemouth and a few others may see Southampton begin to fall down the table a little especially after seeing fonte leave, maybe VVD and if Bertrand followed out that's a whole new back 4 within 6 months, I think gabbi is a diamond in the rough though. Great business would have been sell VVD and buy ake, then sell ake in 2 years to Liverpool for 100 million, surprised less people looked at that lad.

This 80% share deal with Gao sounds good but really in today's terms £210 million pounds seems very little for a PL club with pretty sound finances anyway. I am just wondering whether Katarina is using this as a stepping stone to withdraw completely over the next couple of years.

I feel that having this Chinese involvement may be a way of chucking our cards on the table for speculation from other Asian investors who may want a piece of us in the future. Just an idea of mine which may be completely wrong.

Sam Gallagher would be a risk at best, he is not PL quality just yet and may never will be. I think Shane deserves another chance especially with Lemina coming in. Too many times in Puels time he was just used as a hare with long balls belted up the field with not much chance of him doing anything with them. With a decent midfielder that reads the game well and can put in a precision pass behind their back four Shane may be a very dangerous player as he was in Koemans last season.

Well said Ed, ( again) these so called Liverpool supporters seem disillusioned with the belief that they are the only club worth joining or supporting in the PL and the rules don't apply to them. I can only assume that clown Klopp has a lot to do with this belief. He is almost like some cult spiritual leader who seems to convince all his followers that he knows best no matter what and will lead them to the promised land. How silly it looks to the non believers living in the real world. I can't believe though that not one of the pundits and media are putting the problem at Liverpool's door with Klopp being the only one allowed to answer it. They actually believe we are being unfair to VVD. Crazy.

Just a quick question to the Eds. Is this involvement with the Gao family just a transfer of power? Will it actually make any day to day difference to the running of SFC and if not why did it happen. We as supporters don't really understand the business side of things, well I don't, so are the Leibherr family gradually withdrawing? Why would she let 80% of the stock go from what seemed to be a viable business asset?

chrisdownj

{Ed002's Note - Quite frankly Chris I would hazard a guess that it won't last more than a couple of years. Right now the transaction has been done but going forward it will need to be restructured financially to get on a totally firm footing. I doubt too much change will be seen on a day-to-day basis. As for the Leibherr family, they may well maintain a small shareholding but eventually I would expect to see them move on.}

The reports were that he had decided in January that he wanted to leave and told CP that and Les. What factual evidence do you have that he wasn't reasonably fit during the last few games of last season. I have none and I don't know anybody that does apart from the medical team At St. Mary's and the player himself. Seems strange that all the players that want moves have picked up a virus or have a slight knock that stops them from being available. Couthino, Jonny Evans, Berkley, Sanchez etc, etc.

I thought this was a banter site with people giving their opinions, seems to me I appear to be getting the mild side of hate mail no matter what I put down. I wouldn't step so low guys. Still if it makes you feel happy and justified in making the remarks you do carry on. Life's too short.

I never ever called for Puels head and I take exception to you saying that. How can you say that, it is totally false. I think he could have done things differently but never would I say what you implied.
