Any rumours of ins and outs this summer.

We're signing Don Quay he only demands were 7 bags of carrots a week 😉.

Does anyone know if we’re going back in for promes in the summer?

I thought Redmond had an excellent game yesterday, Sims was very good as well. Lemina keeps showing his quality and I think he needs to play further forward. The two cb’s looked strong. However I have to say the two full backs both had poor games and have been poor all season.

It’s a shame because Cedric and Bertrand are both great full backs but haven’t been as good going forward this season, I don’t know if this has anything to do with the manager but it wouldn’t surprise me if it was him telling them to be more defensive. Romeu looked slow yesterday and again hasn’t been impressive this season.

Hojberg should definitely start from now on and is a great player. The one person who starts every week and is the worst player on the pitch by a country mile is Tadic. He adds nothing to the team and how he starts every match is beyond me, shows MPs shocking team selection.

We are destined for the championship and it’s the boards fault, les reed and Ralph Krueger need to be sacked and so does the manager.

I love the saints more than anything but if them 3 clowns are at the club next season I'm not sure I will get another season ticket.
It’s a shame but I think it's happening, I can’t see us winning another game this season.

Very good post, could not agree more with all of it.

With regards to Bertrand and Cedric, I am not really sure what is going on. They aren't any where near as positive as before, whether that is concern about Tadic/ Redmond covering them, I just don't know. There crossing has not been as good, but then who are they supposed to cross to? If you ever wanted confirmation that bertrand's heart is with southampton, look at his reaction when Gabbi equalised.

With regards to Romeu/ Hojberg . Absolutely right. hojberg was immense, almost running the show, showing exactly why he was at Bayern Munich . and then gets dropped for Romeu, who has been slow and not so incisive this season - I do wonder if that is because now Lamina has arrived and Hojberg is (was! ) on fire, that we have something to compare him with. For sure he should not start over Hojberg.

And then we come on to Tadic . nothing to say .

My team would be :

Cedric Hoedt Stevens Bertrand
Ward-Prowse Hojberg Lemina Simms
Gabbi
Carillo.

2.) 06 Mar 2018 07:50:11
Spot on Upts.
Bertrand really did have a shocker, looks a frustrated player to me?
Tadic has been poor all season, spends more time trying to cheat than anything else.
Didn’t agree with what I have read that Saints dominated Stoke, they looked MUCH more dangerous attacking in the first half and it wasn’t exactly comfortable in the second.
I feel they look like they have more fight in them than we do and am now struggling to see which 2 teams are worse than Saints (West Brom excluded) .
As heartbreaking as it it is I don’t see how we will stay up with the fixtures we have left and our inability to win games. Still hope they give us a chance and sack MP but certain it isn’t going to happen.

3.) 06 Mar 2018 16:14:34
I love Sims but feel he offers more from the bench as an impact at the moment. My starting 11 would be

McCarthy

Cedric hoedt Stephens bertrand

hjobjerg/ boufal romeou lemina jwp/ davis

Gabbiadini Carillo.

4.) 07 Mar 2018 19:11:39
For me, it should be:

GK - McCarthy
RB - Cedric
CB - Hoedt
CB - Stephens
LB - Bertrand
CM - Lemina
CM - Hojbjerg/ Romeu
CM/ CAM - Ward-Prowse
LF - Sims
RF - Gabbiadini
ST - Carillo

Bench:
Forster
Yoshida (when fit, Bednarek until then)
McQueen
Hojbjerg/ Romeu
Tadic (Austin if fit)
Boufal
Redmond

I've deliberately called Sims and Gabbi left and right Forward rather than wing, as for me its vital they stay reasonably close to Carillo so as to avoid leaving our striker isolated as we so often have. The true width SHOULD, assuming strange instructions to stay back aren't in place, come naturally from Cedric and Bertrand, and from the freedom JWP would have in my system to pick up space wherever he can find it. Of course, if Cedric / Bertrand bomb forward then one of the CM's needs to recognise this and sit in, but this is why we have two quite defensive midfielders in Lemina and Hojbjerg/ Romeu.

Whether I play Hojbjerg or Romeu would likely depend on the opposition. against the big teams I'd imagine Romeu would be more useful.

04 Oct 2017 19:59:54
I think when Boufal came on against Stoke he completely changed the game for us. I know a majority of the fan base dislike him but I feel he hasn’t had a good enough chance to prove what he can do.

Upts

1.) 04 Oct 2017 21:31:47
Completely agree I think boufal has the potential to be world class but giving him 10mins game time now and again isn't going to help him reach his potential a bit like when poch came and left gaston in the bench.

2.) 05 Oct 2017 15:07:05
Totally agree with above comments, I think gaston could have developed into exactly what we need right now. Boufal is unrefined class. Needs a bit of tlc to get the gemstone shinning.

A perfect summer for me would be us signing shaqiri, promes, mitrovic and mawson and Forster, redmond, boufal and Carrillo leaving.

Upts

1.) 27 May 2018 16:32:27
A “perfect” summer for me would be Saints signing Messi, Toby A, Kane and Bale (what a goal! Well done Gareth, bloody well done, as a Saints player of the past I’m very proud of you and your ‘sub eh? ’ heroics - wanted the British side Liverpool to win though. Great goal! )
And England to win the World Cup

But ok, realistic perfect summer from a Saints perspective, I’d like to sign as many of the following as possible (we have money available to compete, surely? )
Butland/ Hart/ Buffon
Mawson
He said he wanted more playing time - Gareth Bale!

And I’d not mind if we offloaded: Carrillo, Forster, Boufal
Sell if a good offer: Redmond, Bertrand (I love him but Targett is ready ready ready now) and maybe one other
I’d hope we keep the likes of Romeu, Ward Prowse, Davis and Long.

2.) 28 May 2018 14:19:55
Hmmmm, do we really need another "top" keeper? FF to go, Alex has done us proud and deserves a chance. Bentley, @ Brentford, could be a useful No2 and had shown promise at Southend. Gibson as a CB upgrade, Reed as back up RB, if Cedric goes the JWP as RWB, need to get him in the team for his set piece work. If Bertie goes, then McQueen or Target and just a new striker, or use Gallagher with Gabbi.

3.) 28 May 2018 21:21:06
JWP at rwb is an interesting idea.

4.) 29 May 2018 08:14:14
He isn’t quick enough.

5.) 29 May 2018 14:29:26
JWP has filled in at right back and looked very comfortable there, good post staffssaint.

6.) 29 May 2018 17:02:37
i think you need to check out JWP's stats .
tackling is not one of his strengths . in fact he hardly ever tackles .

7.) 29 May 2018 18:07:26
I would like to see Callum Chambers return, the signing of Promes and Oliver Burke signed.

8.) 29 May 2018 23:29:00
The club needs to sort out who stays. In other words start with Alex McCarthy. Give him a 3 year new contract.

Give Target a new contract and keep him as reserve left back if Bertrand stays.

I think Gabbi should be persuaded to stay.

We have stability with Hughes, now let's stabilise and stop anyone leaving that we want to keep.

We may have to start again in some positions but a stable team, that
plays together without disrupting influences like Van Dyke.

9.) 30 May 2018 12:02:05
Either right back or right midfield is promising. JWP doesn't have the strength or aggression to play in the center. You can see his tremendous work rate and with his crossings could work wonders out right. Especially with tireless cedric bombing up and down and providing that extra aggression. I'd like to see that happen.

16 Sep 2017 18:57:13
Lemina and Hoedt were fantastic today. So was Yoshi and the fullbacks. The midfield was also great today the only people that let the side down imo was redmond and tadic but that's what them two are best at.

Upts

1.) 16 Sep 2017 19:24:49
I agree both new signings look quality. Lemina looks strong and composed, he has a lot of energy, looks like a quality CDM. I think Tadic did okay, at least he stuck to the wing and supported Cedric. I think he'd be better off on the left. Everything Bertrand had the ball on the left Redmond had drifted inside and tried to play behind Long. We lost the ball a lot of the left flank today. I think Redmond needs to be dropped. I'd rather have Long on the wing than him.

2.) 16 Sep 2017 19:25:23
Don't agree about Tadic he played very well today but couldn't agree more about Redmond, he is such a frustrating player. Thought Shane did a great job today and the man everybody seems to think is too old and shouldn't be in the side Steve Davis had another great captains performance. He was at the heart of everything we did.

3.) 16 Sep 2017 21:03:56
Agree with Duke. Tc had a pretty good game. Redmond was awful really. Personally I think he needs a sports psychologist. He always looks frantic and out of control.

4.) 18 Sep 2017 08:31:57
Definitely agree about dropping Redmond. Thought Tadic linked up really well with Cedric though. Cedric overlapped and crossed with his right and Tadic stayed out there and crossed with his left. Caused them problems most of the game. Davis started the game really well but dropped off the second half.

Probably our best player for the first 20 mins. Lemina looks like a great find and was my man of the match. Long isn't our best striker but when he plays he chases everything down and frees up the Midfielders to come forward more. Left side is an issue. Redmond and Boufal aren't good enough. I'd be tempted to try Mcqueen there unless we move to a back three.

5.) 18 Sep 2017 14:38:56
I can’t agree with the positive reviews about Tadic’s performance. I feel he had little impact on the game, his passing was poor and for someone in the team to create, he did very little. His statistics are remarkably similar to Redmond’s in this game, except Redmond’s passing accuracy was far superior. When a creative player has a passing accuracy of 69%, as Tadic’s was on Saturday, at best he’s doing little for you going forwards, at worst he’s conceding too much possession to the opposition and exposing our team to a swift counter. Redmond’s offensive stats are better save for crosses attempted. In 90 mins, he attempted only one cross compared to Tadic’s five. That said, each player achieved one accurate cross so is Redmond to be criticised for not crossing more, or praised for being less wasteful then Tadic?

What do we expect from our wide players? I would say enough pace and skill to beat the full back and the technical ability to put the right type of cross in, given the position of teammates. Tadic lacks pace and I can’t remember the last time he used skill to sit a full back down to create space for him to cross. He’s also left-footed so needs to cut back on to his left to swing a cross in. Redmond has the pace but as a right-footed player on the left he, like Tadic, prefers to drift inside, so not using his main asset to get in behind. Tadic did stay out wide more often than Redmond on Saturday, but with little benefit to the team. Redmond managed more shots, with more on target. Tadic missed the goal with his only effort.

I don’t think either of our wide players are playing particularly well at the moment. Perhaps Redmond would be better as a more orthodox wide player, right footed on the right wing with instruction to beat his man and cross and only cut inside as a last resort. I don’t see wide play as Tadic’s strength but it may be worth a try.

Also, Long is an enigma to me. He has a great work ethic and I’m sure defenders hate playing against him as he chases lost causes and is very physical. But, on Saturday, he managed one off-target shot. He was playing as a striker. His scoring record has never been up there but of late, it’s lower than ever. His work ethic and competitive spirit are positive attributes to add to a side, but his impact is often minimal which is not good enough when he is playing as our only striker. As part of a forward two or three, perhaps you can afford a Heskey-esque player who scores little but brings other qualities to the attack. Perhaps play him wide if you’re dropping Redmond or Tadic but he hardly an orthodox winger either.

MP says the team’s construction is in transition at the moment so we may see more changes before he settles on a team. We do have options personnel and formation so it’ll be interesting to see what will come against Utd.

6.) 18 Sep 2017 21:42:08
What a long winded way to explain you haven't got a clue what you're talking about.

7.) 19 Sep 2017 06:16:39
We've got two of the best full backs in the league. It showed on the right side when Tadic stayed out there that Cedric (and Tadic) could both cause problems when then supported each other.
Bertrand hasn't got that support in front of him so we need to find a decent winger to get the best out of Bertrand. He looks frustrated at the moment.
Or we shift to 3 at the back.

8.) 19 Sep 2017 14:02:58
When you achieved the same result in three meagre sentences of drivel Saint Duke. Congratulations!

9.) 20 Sep 2017 13:22:51
I agree with the many that I find Redmond frustrating to watch, but further to the Tadic v Redmond debate on who is contributing more to the team at the moment, Nathan Redmomd appears on Planet365s statistical breakdown of the season so far as 10th best chance creator from open play with 2.4 chances average over 90 mins. Needless to say he's the only Saints player on that list. Mario Lemina is first in the league for making recovery tackles, averaging 11.9 over 90 mins.

10.) 20 Sep 2017 13:31:58
Sorry, that should be Planet Football's stats breakdown - I accessed the article via Football365.

14 Aug 2017 15:32:45
IMO I think Jack Stephens should start this season he reads the game excellently and is starting to bring the ball out of the defence and start an attack just like vvd I rate him very highly.

Upts

1.) 14 Aug 2017 21:34:45
Yet another one off the production line. Looks like last season's experience one the league and the cup final has brought him on massively and he's taking his chance.

Stephens will hopefully be the natural successor to fonte. now we either add one more cb and wait for Virgil to come back, or he's sold and we buy a cb and a goalscoring midfielder with the funds.

2.) 15 Aug 2017 03:52:09
Hoedt and stephens. I'd take that.

3.) 15 Aug 2017 03:54:00
Or Wimmer and stephens. Both seem sound to me. Either way don't think we'll ever see virgil in a saints shirt again. He's made his position clear.

I just don't believe this due to the fact that why would kl authorise the takeover if they had to sell players and not put in funds to the club just to pay back the club.
